I'm finding sometimes I like dancing to energetic bouncy funky funky upbeat songs, and other times, I really like mellow more romantic and sensual songs.
Lately though, I find that I love dancing in a more sensually way. I love smaller movements that kinda involve the whole of me. Does that make sense? I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but there can be so much beauty and feeling in just a single turn, either for him or for her. Sometimes, I have no need to make such big movements, with lots of spins n stuff. I like the subtleties of salsa ... for now ...
How about you?
Fast, Punchy, Upbeat, Energetic ... or ... Sensual, Romantic?

How bout a little of both? ;)
Definitely a fan of slower salsas, tho... More savoring, to my taste.

Oh god yeah both, I wouldn't want to limit myself. Good to have the contrast of feeling and tempo, adds texture to the dance don't you think?
I'm defo favouring slowing things down though, for now. I guess we go through phases.

Depends on the music. I like the dance to match the feel of the song.

All of the above...though I tend to prefer smooth whether it's smooth and sensual or smooth and just cool.

It really depends on who one is dancing with and the music being played.

Don't forget the gutsy afrocuban channelling-the-forces-of-heaven-and-earth style too! It's funky without being urban, sensuous without being overly sensual, ecstatic without being gimmicky... mmm yeah...

The music will tell you where to go.
Strong music, strong moves. Softer music, softer, sensual moves - if you can find a partner who will go there.

What I love about salsa, and many other social dances, is that there are so many different styles even within a single music genre. Each of them allow me to express a different part of my personality. Some salsas are sensual and smooth, some are sharp and aggressive, some are jazzy and playful . . . I love them all as long as I feel moved by the music and can tell that my partner is listening to the music as well. There is nothing more frustrating to me than a leader who is doing a bunch of fancy stuff without listening to the mood of the music and the nuances within it. I notice that beginners are attracted to the "fancy" dancers at first (and sometimes always), but I personally appreciate dancers that may not stand out at first but who have a great connection to each other and the music.
Definitely depends on both the partner and the song for me. :)

since dance for me primarily naturally addresses the senses .. then sensually explosive is my preference

Depends on the music. I like the dance to match the feel of the song.Exactly, the music is the key. Yet I can see how folks would have a preference, but a little variety is likley best.
On a different tangent ... MacMoto, how are things going with the "bus" :?:

Uh oh. Sounds like you need to explore the addictive world of Argentine Tango. Join us.... The first meeting is free and we even have free Kool-aid and cookies. (Cookies!)
But to be serious... I do know exactly how you feel about dynamics. The reason I mention tango is because some songs call for bouncy and upbeat while others call for the more slow and sensual. The "next level" of tango that I've found few at dance socials have reached is the ability to go beyond the skillfull steps and dance the music. One thing I absolutely love about my partner is he knows how to capture these feelings with an economy of movement. You say, "slow and sensual" to many leads and they think, "I've got to do lots of fancy slow dips!"
And still on a serious note, "I love smaller movements that kinda involve the whole of me" is sooooooo tango. ;)

I absolutely second this - from what you've said Argentine Tango definitely sounds like it's the place for you. I love fast and slow salsa, but Argentine Tango has this different sort of intensity, a sensuality and smoothness of movement you won't find anywhere in a salsa club. I love them both, and they both bring out very different sides of my personality - it also very much depends on my mood too.
I will however give a word of warning...
....Me is right - Argentine Tango is just as addictive as salsa, so be warned, once you step in you may not step out again!!

fast or slow, new or old, mellow or upbeat if it catches me right where my heart engorges, I'm game.
