View Full Version : Ladies, What's Your Preference?

After some of the recent discussions I was curious about the ladies preference for men's tops in latin. So what is your preference? Do you prefer turtlenecks, open front, or other?

Well all of the guys around my studio have their shirts undone all the way to their pants. So I see chests all day long... I rather like it. I think it creates a long line in the body and works very well for latin and rhythm. We like to see the ladies backs to watch the muscles working, why not also see the men?

(might like it more if most of them weren't 15)

OK, but if a guy has his shirt open to there, what's the consensus on the furry carpet issue? I just looked at a bunch of photos from a recent comp, and am gagging at one of the Pros. To keep things more simple, let's confine this to hairy chests on the comp floor, not your own personal preferences outside dancing . If you want Chewbacca in your bed, more power to ya.

Note to self, contact danceshopper and have them hcange that turtleneck I ordered to one with an open chest. ;)

Well I like a mid open. I think a turtleneck looks too hot on the floor for some reason. Especially in latin a woman's dress is short, and more tropical and a turtleneck looks too warm in comparison to the woman's dress.

Open till the waist of the pants well only if he had the body for it and I agree no hairy chests for the dance floor.

for me I think mid open would be a nice compromise and suit all body types.

If the shirt's got to stay on, then open just a bit or a turtleneck. Not open mid-way down, not open down to waist. Furry or not furry isn't even a consideration...if your shirt is on, I don't want to know about degrees of furriness.

Not sure how that translates to latin shirts, but there you have it.

I'm not a fan of the gents latin shirts that open to the waist, even if the guy wearing it is totally built... that's just too much of a good thing!

To me there is nothing better then a guy in an open neck shirt...and the perfectly tailored latin slacks... good stuff! 8-)

I have to agree with above comments that the mock trutleneck, while I've seen it work, for the most part looks too warm on the dance floor.

I'm going to clarify what I mean by mid-open. For me mid open is the collar button open and one more button. That is the most buttons open that would really please me. If it has to be open till the waist (if that's a rule or something, I'm new so I don't know dress codes) then that's another story.

I think the open-to-the-waist latin shirt adds to the prevalent sleaze factor I often see in latin. I don't need to see half of the woman's butt sticking out and I don't need to see the guy's chest. I'm not a prude - I think many dancers have beautiful bodies that they can go to the beach to show off. When they are dancing, I agree with Peaches: if you are gonna wear clothes, then wear clothes. Don't open them, hike them up-to-there, slash them open to reveal more skin, etc. Just wear your beautiful, too-expesnive costumes and be classy; leave the exhibitionism for the beach.

I don't like turtlenecks much in general (dance or otherwise). Open about halfway down to the waist is good. I also love a man in a white shirt, but you don't see that often in latin/rhythm.

I don't like open chest...to me it looks so ...elvis...bleh...if he wants to have an open back...lol...that's fine...seriously though....I like a turtleneck on a buff guy...and a looser tunic sort of shirt on a guy with uh...extra calories hanging on

Yeah, I prefer only a little open (like the top and second button undone), or a skivvy (er...turtleneck? Is that the same thing? I think it is...at least, I understand it to be). Open all the way to *here* is just not cool...if it must be open then definitely no hair!

Turtleneck, crewneck, or a teeny bit open. Open to the navel/waist....uh, no. And if it is open, please wax/pluck/shave/whatever. PLEASE.

heh, I won't shave my chest, that's why I do the turtleneck. Now I keep it neatly trimmed (deja vu of another thread anyone? :) ), but since I don't shave, I won't wear open collared shirt, thoguh I have a couple.

Okay, I do like mid-open or open to waist. I don't find it sleazy at all. I find it sexy and appropriate to the style.

I don't mind the turtlenecks either. I even like some of the alternative looks, on the right person. For example, the year before last, Andrei Gavrilene wore a shirt and suspenders for one of the nights of USDSC, and on him I thought that was sexy and eye catching. I also have seen Andre Paramonov wearing what I would call a very tailored Mao jacket, and I thought it looked great. Just like for women, I think you have to know your body type.

I share the fondness for white shirts.

What I really don't like is when the men's shirts match the women and the woman is wearing a garishly bright, ultra-feminine color. I prefer white or black on the man so that the brightness of the woman's costume pops against it.

I also don't like when the man's shirt has some totally wild pattern. There was one man's shirt in the final at Maryland Dancesport last week that was...let's just say it was not my style. I have also seen men's shirts that look like bad wallpaper patterns, with big floral designs. That's a little too much visually for me, given that the woman's costume usually also has something major going on.

A very valuable high taste post. I shall consider your points when I buy my shirts next time. How about see-through mesh shirt? If you don't like it, I wil donate mine to the Salvation Army. Andrei often wears meshshirt. Do you like men wearing a vest without a shirt?

No carpet on any exposed area except the top of your head and your arms (this applies to any part of the arm from hand to pit, but not including pit).

*grin* you bet Joe, though I have to admit to a bit more than an ankle on my costumes.

for me, i do prefer turtlenecks, black... fabric with bit of texture or interest, maybe a few rhinestones... simple but chic. not a fan of the open-down-to-navel look.
