I had the extreme pleasure of being judged by him once in a comp. (To the elite-level Amateurs and to the Pros, this might not be such a big deal, but as someone who mostly dances Pro/Am it was a big deal.) It was the 2002 USDSC, and I was having a horrible time at the comp. The first day I danced was the single-dances and I was last in all my events. He was not on the panel that day.

The next day was the Scholarship, and I was just so "over" the comp at that point...but when I looked at the marks afterwards, not only was I not place last, I had also earned a recall from Mr. Irvine in the Foxtrot. That was pretty special to me, and made my day.

If you ever get a chance to read his autobiography, "The Dancing Years," do so. It's got a lot of great pictures of him & Bobbie back in the day in it, too.

He truly made a place for he and his love/partner in BR. I remember him talking about tango, and the proper usage of the feet. He proceded to take a quarter from his pocket and palce it on the floor under his right foot. After dancing a few simple figures along the LOD of the approx. 60' dance floor, he lifted his foot and showed everyone, who had not fainted, the quarter. Our condolances to his family. Now they may dance again.
