Hi guys, i have a showcase this weekend, and i have a light blue standard gown. I really love it, but i am not sure what shoes to wear, i personally think the black goes better, but the main instructor at my studio says tan i personally think the tan does not go well and , she said black should only be for practice, but the tan just seems to look weird up against the dress, so i wanted you guys opinions. Thanks a bunch!;-)

Well considering it's just a showcase, I think you should be able to choose. Typically you want to stick with tan since it matches your skin tone best and elongates the leg, but in this case, it shouldn't matter. I hope you have fun. :)
The tan isn't supposed to match the dress, it matches your legs so people don't focus on any footwork mistakes. I'd go with the tan. I've worn black for showcases, but only with black or once with a red dress. Unless the black truly goes with the dress, go with the tan.

I'd say go with the tan. That's what people are used to seeing in comps and performances--tan with all colors of dress. The reasons are, as lc said, to elongate the leg and to blend with the floor color. So especially if it is a comp-type gown, the standard of what looks best for regular clothes doesn't really apply.
Especially against a wood floor, the black will call attention to your feet. So unless your footwork is beyond impeccable . . . . ;-)

I personally like the look of the tan shoes the best unless you can get shoes that match the dress perfectly. Shoes way darker than the dress sound like they would jump out at people and they would see the shoes rather than the dress.
Oops, I took too long to post. Oh well...
Good luck to you!!

I do not recommend wearing black shoes unless your dress is black (or mostly black) and you are also wearing black fishnets. To me, black shoes with a lighter dress screams "newbie." Go with the tan, it comes across as more polished.
Not only that, but you will only be able to wear light blue shoes with a light blue dress. :)

Now if this was AT I would suggest sparkly glitter encrusted silver stilettos...
My current look is a neon green dress with bright pink shoes.
Surely you could get away with silver? that would look lovely!

It's interesting how clothing styles differ across the different dance styles, basically no one wears metallic shoes in Standard.

I have a black pair of dance shoes, but that's my practice shoes. I wore them for a Swing showcase, but I wouldn't wear them for Ballroom or a Latin showcase etc. Speaking of shoes, I had better get my new pair ordered! ;)

Well, few wear metallics dresses in Standard, compared to Latin, do they? ;)
