This will probably give it away but...he invented a dance.

Yes. That gives it away. Google, baby. I won't say. I was actually going to guess Arthur Murray, before the hint. I googled for photos of good old Art, but couldn't find any. I wonder if there are any to be had. Hmm.

I was thinking it was Vernon Castle?...

Yes, Vernon Castle certainly invented a dance...
(BTW, welcome to the Dance Forums!)
...but this is not Vernon Castle, although this person danced in the same era as the Castles.

Are you talking about the Castle walk, chachagirlie? Welcome to the forums, btw. :D

Peabody would have been another good guess in a similar (slightly later, I think) time period, but the guy who invented that one was supposed to have been really fat. Hence the way off to one side dance hold. Hmm.

the gentleman is Mr. Harry Fox, creator of "Fox's Trot', later called the Fox trot

Hi anonymous lady! Welcome. 8) :D And of course, peabody was later, because it was a variation/derivation of the foxtrot. LOL.

Google image search brings up three or four on the first page (all with his wife).
Did he invent the Intl' or American foxtrot? Which came first anyway? He'd look to me an American Foxtrot guy...

He invented *the* Fox Trot. Without dear Harry, we wouldn't have *any* Fox Trot. We'd all probably be dancing PEABODY. 8)
I crack me up.

I think pretty much all of the dances were invented somewhere (many of them here) but first really figured out by the British dance teacher tradition.
In the case of foxtrot, they've been trying to explain it to us ever since...

Yep. Strange as it feels to say so, today, last year this time, I didn't know how to do a google image search. *shakes head vigorously -- hears marbles   *
