Hey Everyone,
Okay so my partner and I might be breaking it off after two amazing years of dancing. I want to get a memorable gift that will remind him of our great years together. Anyone got any ideas. Im totally stuck.

If your creative you could do a scrapbook of pictures of your dancing or create a video collage type thing if you have tapes of you two dancing.
Just some ideas.

If you have videos of your dancing spread out over a bunch of different tapes and DVDs, you could edit the highlights of them together and put them on one DVD.

think of the things that you know give him personal joy...think of the things that have been private personal holy moments for you...find a way of bringing those things together to reverence him...so sad and yet envious of you....celebrate that gift

Say what you really want to say--thank him, good memories, etc.--in a card.

I would buy a high quality wrist watch that does not break down easily, something like a Rolex or Cartier, with an inscription on the back. He will remember you every time he uses it several times a day. Btw, is he crossing River of No Return forever?

You could also create a shadow box that would house a picture of the two of you dancing, plus his number from your last competition together (if you can snag it from him) and any other little mementos that represent dance experiences/jokes/memories you have.

wow thank you guys. No he isn't falling off the earth or anything just going on his mission. I relally like the shadow box idea.

'his mission?' mystery....
If he is carrying on dancing a set of shirt jewelry would be nice (mother of pearl, gold/black, whatever is different from his usual) - he will then think of you each time he uses it. A spotted bow tie or embroidered waistcoat for the non-competitive (showcase, special social event) would also work.
And you ILB? What are your dance plans?

Wow. Best wishes to your partner, ILB. From what I've heard, it's a tough but unbelievably rewarding period of time. Good for him.
Edit to add: I don't know what the rules are regarding what he can take with him, but since he's going on his mission, perhaps something small he can take with him that will remind him of your friendship and the good times you had while dancing.

thanks P. that was out of my league!
And best of luck to DP. In which case my suggestions aren't much use - unless you want to encourage him to go back to dance when he returns (if that is possible). On the lines of P's suggestion, maybe something as simple as a really nice pen....

I hope he's not going until after the BYU competition in March.

It was always interesting to talk with the people out there and see whose kids were on their mission, and what the latest news was, and to hear some of the stories.
*sigh* I kind of miss going out there, actually.

Wow its interesting to hear all the comments made. Thats a great idea about giving him something to take on his mission. Im going to have to look for a new partner. To comment on star gazers post we for sure are waiting until after byu competition. We have no choice actually. We both dance for the BYU Youth Ballroom Team and thats what we work all year for. LDS people are great. Personally im not LDS. It's extremely hard to live in Utah where almost everyone is LDS.

 shock...you are not alone.
But truthfully, there is so much to like about Utah that not being LDS is not that enormous of an issue for us.

How 'bout throwing a dance in their honour and invite your friends. Pot Luck!
Halls around here rent for about $25/hr. on weekend afternoons. Obviously more at night but possibly theres an LDS locale that can discount it.
Maybe friends will chip in for the cost.

I have a colleague who moved to St. George Utah - so most people assume he's LDS.

You can stone a pair of his boxers with his favorite dance move on it!!
So on his behind, it could say "Hockey Stick", "Roundabout" (some gold samba move ~shurgs~) or "Cuban Rock" or "Fishtail" or "Fallaway". hahaha!! :nope:
I'm loving it!! Or if he's not down, you can always get him the "Real Men Ballroom Dance" T-shirt. They sell it online somewhere.

I like these ideas. How about a slideshow choreographed to a favorite piece of music?

Here's another one.
Take one of your trophies or medals (the latter will travel easier) and get it professionally engraved with: ' From ** with thanks for ** yrs of unforgetable dancing' or something like that.

So on his behind, it could say "Hockey Stick"
Just as long as it doesn't say that on the front...
