Just a thought..... I know when myspace started up they were just a site but now they have parties and occasional get togethers. I think it would be fun to have DF dances. Everyone in these forums is so awesome! We love seeing each other at comps and helping each other out with issues. What do you guys think????

Sounds like it'd be fun. Wonder what the other DF'ers think about it.....

we have made attempts at various comps and they do happen on a small scale...a good place to start would be to pm the local df-rs just prior to a local comp...

Sounds like a good idea. Something like Embassy maybe because I know a lot of local DF'ers as well as some out of state because it is a big comp. Hmmm...(wondering)

There should be no pushing or shoving, if there is proper use of the standing leg. ;)

chica,

Emerald is just around the corner, are you going? If so, maybe you want to start the Emerald thread to see who's going.

As fascination said, we can all keep an eye open for the others and you'll meet some more great DFers - we'll all meet some more great DFers!

As you know, many more are reading than let on . . . !

This needs more investigation. I have met a few DFers in person and it always feels a little odd.

Probably, the 'problem' (if there is one) is that we know each other virtually - just the thin lines of text with whatever we feel is important to communicate thereby. Meeting the real person is totally different from this virtual image and I think it makes people react very differnetly - from feeling shy to totally uncomfortable.

I also tried once to organize a get together but maybe we should just treasure each other as the virtual people we are. Real meetings may work best on an individual rather than group basis. Its possible also that meeting to dance would work better - at least thats one thing we really do have in common! If DF was rich it could sponsor a comp and then we could do it Totally Right!

meh...that is not the part of it that I mean ee...I expect it to be awkward a bit at first...but that is even if people actually do show up...THAT is what I am talking about...sort like all the people who say "hey yea, tell me when you are dancing so I can come and see and then invariably never show"...which is alos fine but I am just wanting to let chica know that, like anything else, the number of people who express interest and number of people who show is always ...uh...markedly different...as for your point....a few mojitos and it's all good

Ah yes, there's that too. Still, I think I have seen all the DFers I've met dance... Have we tried having a meeting planned well in advance of the comp? Something like a happy hour at the bar? If its done early enough then maybe people could schedule it with more committment?

as for your point....a few mojitos and it's all good

then I look forward to mojitos with you :)

Are you coming to USA Dance nationals, chocolatechica? I know there will be quite a few DFers there. (That reminds that I should probably register, seeing as how the deadline is March 7th....)

A couple DFers who know and trust each other, and DFers who want to meet - introduce/meet other DFers who are interested in meeting at a comp. Each meeting, each comp thread, adds to those who know each other. We've gotten pretty decent meetings of DFers throughout a comp by this method.

Some DFers have expressed these concern about larger meetings in a designated place such as "meet at the bar at 9:30PM":
a) not everyone wants to be known (or easily identified) for their own personal reasons
b) there is also a worry that lurkers would watch the group, learning the identities without the burden of being asked to respect an individual's privacy

we have made attempts at various comps and they do happen on a small scale...a good place to start would be to pm the local df-rs just prior to a local comp...

Good idea

Real meetings may work best on an individual rather than group basis.

Individual - and small groups - knowing ahead of time and PMing helps break the ice for those who desire to meet.

Meeting DFers is fun (least, meeting fasc and Reb and their spouses was ;) ), but I tend to be too shy for a big group gathering.

Nothing about meeting people online, I have two campouts a year with a large group that I met all of online originally, with exception of a few kids and spouses. I'm just shy. :)

Welcome to Dance Forums granola (you made it to 10 posts before we could catch up . . . some we never do!)

Sounds like you, me, elise, and some others will be meeting up at a comp coming to your neighborhood soon!

I am proud to say that so far my experience with meeting DF'ers in person has been great! People turned out to be quite similiar or if not "better" than what I knew them before virtually. Of course, I am extremely outgoing too which might help the situation a bit. ;)

Unfortunately, I don't do too many comps a year now, but I would still love to meet fellow DF'ers whenever possible! :D

Things like a Meet and Greet are always good ideas, only mostly impractical. As we have read: comps are one way, but many can't go; parties are fun, but rather class reunionish, and many are just shy persons; a DF event would be the best, but such events are massive undertakings (planning, marketing, financing, etc).

Perhaps an easy one would be a DF dance cruise. Most cruises have nightly dances anyway (no need to plan), persons are not obligated to be together (no need to feel shy), all expenses are covered by someone else (the cruise line). Need not be long...a w/e (3 - 4 day) trip would be the perfect length of time to not feel pressured or overwhelmed.

Chocky-chica, I echo most other's sentiment that it works well keeping' it small & spontaneous. I've met a number of DFers and have *really* enjoyed doing so. Getting to know a live flesh-and-blood person after getting to know them virtually is a delight, to my mind. It's fun to see what translates to 3D, and what doesn't. :)

Drinks at bar after competing is great idea. Just remain flexible, is my recommendation. There's a lot going on the comps for a lot of people...not just their own events, but also what they want to see.

I'm assuming it will take a while for something that that to build up. I just love meeting DF'ers. Puts a face to the wonderful people I am getting tips and advice from. So far what I've mostly done is say I'l bee at so and so comp and if someone else is going we usually run into each other (no formal meeting). That's kinda fun too. I was just thinking on the stand point of like a social dance thing. Of course I don't think it will be huge the first couple of times, but as the word spreads that it is fun, maybe more DF'ers would like to join.:D

Running into is a great way as its natural - trouble is you have to know who to run into! Even with photobook its hard sometimes to tell. I did not even recognize Kat when I first saw her, despite umpteen gorgeous dress pics (maybe thats the reason, I remember the dresses). Fortunately, I did spot her partner...

I love the sequence idea reb but I think you will get too many false-positives with this one. Conversation between DF member and Other Dancer who has just performed the secret "3BF, 3L, 3BF" sequence:

DF member: "Psst I just saw 'it' - watch, 3BF, 3L, 3BF"
Other dancer: 'Are you nuts?"

I think we have to make it an impossible one so that there can be no confusion. Thus, 'Botafogo (sorry LG, its just such a great name), Wing (waltz), feather finish (FT), rhumba walk, fishtail (QS),'. Or BF,WI,FF,RW,FT' for short. No way you could do that by accident...

Maybe just BF, Wing would be enough to indicate you were DF and also totally insane...

The 4th of July WCS convention in Phoenix. Attendance for these is large enough to think that there would be a few DFers in the mix, but haven't met any other than those who live locally. If anyone here does attend please let me know.
