There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word -- from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word and, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

but no re-arranging of letters right?

That's correct. Start with a nine letter English word and, leaving the rest of the letters as they are, remove one letter at a time to create a new word each time.

Are you sure it is an English word and not an American one

Not going to say anything just yet, but just so that SD knows that I know, the word begins with an "s" :D
Oh, and according to my source on Google, there may be more than one word as an option

If you have the first letter (or actually, the last remaining letter), it should be possible to work your way forward to the nine letter word. Hmm.
Now the question is whether I can overcome my innate laziness enough to work out the puzzle. ... Nah! LOL.

What is the shortest complete sentence in the English language?
I am.
What separates "60 Minutes" (on CBS) from every other TV show?
every other hour-long show is only 50 minutes (approx)
If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you would find the letter "A"?
that depends on if you turn left or right, it's one thousand or negative one-- assuming you don't go by way of halves or quarters etc.
What do bullet proof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers and laser printers all have in common?
when you need them they can really save your a$$
What trivia fact about Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny) is the most ironic?
He didn't like carrots
Let me know how many are incorrect... I didn't google (which is why I skipped the first few)

How old was the youngest Pope?
Depends....
Benedict IX (reigned 1032-44) was supposedly only 12 years old when his family got him on the papal throne. But his year of birth isn't certain, and he was excommunicated by his successor or the anti-pope. So does that count? :)

About the Pope thing (look what you've done to me, I can't get this out of my mind). If you don't accept Benedict because of the uncertainty of his birth year, then the next bet would be John XII, who was 18 when elected to the papacy.
However, not having access to a research library at the moment, I can't say whether John's dates are any more reliable than Benedict's. Modern Church historians seem more inclined to look at Benedict's election at 12 to be legendary--but then even modern historians, particularly Catholics, have an axe to grind.
So--youngest pope in legend, Benedict; youngest with any degree of certainty, John XII.
