Just a bit of frivolity

Who do you know of who dances tango as a hobby?

I can think of Clive James (wish he were Prime Minister) and I think Joeley Richardson learnt to tango for an episode of Nip/Tuck (don't know whether she took it up though).

And - for a further bit of frivolity: Who would your fantasy tango partner be (excluding professional tango dancers)... Hmm, think mine would be Bryan Ferry because he's so suave! :)

Yes, and TN seems quite down to earth (for a Hollywood star).

I wonder if there are any famous closet tango dancers, who dare not admit their addiction!

There are many others, including; Arnold Schwarznegger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tia Carrera, and me...OK, not so famous, but, hey... http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/innocent/innocent0004.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net/freesmiley.php?smiley=innocent/innocent0004.gif)

:) And one would presume that the tango community aren't the type to go blabbing to the tabloids so they can exercise their addiction with alacrity... either that or they go to the Priory ;-)

Actually, a few years ago, my partner and I were in North Hollywood where we went to eat at a Hole-in-the-Wall on some corner of an indescript neighborhood. When we entered, we found shabby lighting, picnic style tables, a fair amount of noise, 2 bands (one playing only lambadas and the other only Arg. Tangos...alternatively every half hour). We also found the place to be crowded with celebs; stars, directors, writers, producers. After dancing, we were invited to one director's table, and subsequently offered a dancing role in a movie project. Unfortunately, this was on sat., they were filming on mon., but we had prior obligations across the country on tues., and had to decline.

Wow! I take it you weren't expecting to even have a band to dance to?

Well, we were told to go there. We were anticipating the band and the music, just not the ambiance or celebs, and, certainly, not being offerred a role. It was a fun eve.

He does... he lives in northern Virginia and has renovated his stables into a gorgeous ballroom that was featured a few years back in Architectural Digest.
Some of our tango community have been privleged enough to have been invited to dance there, but alas it was "before my time". I understand that he does not have as many milongas as he once had having caught some friction from his neighbors or something regarding them...what a shame.... it would have been fun.

I think I read that Robert de Niro does tango.

Oooo-errr. Okay, Angelina Jolie (to lead) and James McEvoy (to follow)...BUT...the nearest I get to "well known" is a chap I often dance with who starred alongside Hugo Weaving in "V" for Vendetta. Regulars to Negs and the Dome may have seen him strutting his cool self.

p.s. Robert Duval dances tango

Angelina Jolie? Eek - you must be tall! I'm afraid I'd be stuck with Kylie! Tango-ing with Mr Tumnus, eh? ;)

V for Vendetta - only ones I know are Stephen Rea, Stephen Fry (heart him) and Rupert Graves.

Saw Assassination Tango a couple of years ago - can't remember much about it, thought he seemed more ballroom though.....

Kicca's lovely - she's got her own web site (http://www.kiccatommasi.com/) - I actually started learning (by luck) with her with my first lessons.

But, "famous" is stretching a point I think...

Quite!! If that's the case I've danced with Giraldo, Ivan, David, Pablo, Kicca's partner (name escapes me), Eduardo, etc.

Read yesterday Prince Charles has announced he is a fan of Tango and is keen to learn.

You've danced with Veron? Take it you mean the dancer, not the footballer ;) Ooooh my word!! *insert fainting smilie* One of my fave ever tango moments - the scene in The Tango Lesson where they dance to Zum in the cafe.

Prince Charles: Are you going to offer your services?

Sally Potter, of course. She ditched her movie directing career for a while to do shows with Veron. I don't know if they are still together, though.

Indeed, despite that I thnk her footwork and connections needed severe attention when last I saw her, I like Kicca.

Yes, as in Pablo, but I would've rather the footieplayer - much cuter.

Bonny Prince Charlie is busy sunning himself up (with Cam) at the moment (and a few short kilometers away from my Mah & Dah) in glorious Jamaica. He'll be too reggae'd and buffed up to want to do anything as studiously serious as tango now. That's a dead cert:cowboy:

Miles once claimed to have seen Keira Knightley at Cellspace in San Francisco but obviously this can't be taken as gospel.

Oh, the choices! But, I think Christopher Walken would be fun. He's earned a special place in my heart not only as a generally cool guy who turns up in most of the oddball garbage I watch, but this Fatboy Slim video is just the greatest!

How can you not want to dance tango with the guy after watching that?

Aw, come on... you know he's cool. ;)

Hmm. Looks like the person who uploaded it disabled embedding. So you can still visit the link at Youtube to view it, but you cannot embed it into blogs or messageboards. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/sauer/angry-smiley-003.gif

But yes, it is the video for Weapon of Choice. :D
