Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready to get my first Latin costume designed/made, and I'd like some advice. My personal favorite costume design has the tails at the back with rows of ruffles; I think these move really well and emphasize turns, but I have heard they're very heavy. My friend has mentioned a type of dress with a big bunched-up rosette at the back in place of a tail; he says this also looks great because the rosette expands and contracts as you dance, but I have never seen a video of this style in action. Does anyone have a vid? What do you guys think would look good?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what your friend is describing but if you look at videos on this site you can see what Pros and amatures are wearing at current American competitons and how they move.

A well-stoned Latin dress (NOT that it has to be) is going to be "heavy" at any rate... you'll get used to it... get what YOU WANT! Just be sure the maker is very clear on your instructions.

The weight can be distracting or a non issue depending on where the beading/stoning is. I've read on this forum that beaded tails can be a little distracting if you're not used to them whipping around and whacking your legs, but you and your partner could probably get used to it pretty easily (just practice in costume before you hit the comp floor.) Costumes that are quite heavy to hold can feel just fine if the weight is spread out over the entire thing. There is some kind of physics term to describe this but I don't remember. agh.
