Most dances that I've ever been to that included mixers the dance was Foxtrot, but one studio here that is no longer in business did Waltz mixers instead. Aside from the Swing snowballs have you seen any other variations?

For ballroom it's generally a foxtrot or waltz mixer. They're slow enough that one can progress down the floor and LOD without much trouble. You can't do any rhythm or Latin because they don't travel. And any other standard/smooth dances, the couple may be a bit too close for comfort or too quick for comfort.

But I would love to see a polka social... if people could survive 3 consecutive polkas that last at least 3 minutes each.

I wouldn't mind a lambada mixer, but I'm not that young anymore. ;)

Here in the mid atlantic part of US, the mixer is referred to as a Paula Jones. We do swing/cha-cha/waltz/foxtrot. The ladies form an inner circle with the men walking around the ladies. When the whistle sounds, the men "grab" the nearest lady and dances till the whistle blows again and the process gets repeated.
Another type mixer is one where the men are just asked to dance with someone they haven't danced with that evening, which normally translates into the nearest female partner.
Must say, i favor the regular type mixer
