What things do you feel make for a great studio. Do you feel that size and location should be a part of that?
I feel that it all comes down to management and staff; the same as any other business.

well, IMO, at least one floor (if there's more than one) should be of sufficient size to support LOD for a group class, and a better/safer part of town is certainly preferable.
there are two very successful studios maybe 10 miles from each other & each within 15 minutes of my home. i've taken lessons from both. they are at opposite ends of the spectrum - one concentrates on social dance (and a number of couples have met & married through their classes) and the staff is very friendly while the other studio turns out great technical if somewhat snotty/arrogant dancers and the staff (especially the owner's mom when she worked there) often exhibit arrogance and demonstrate marginal people skills.
as for any other business:
- the studio should have a clear understanding of the client base they are targeting - i don't think "one size fits all" when it comes to dance;
- marketing strategy- make that target base aware and understand why they're getting value for their money and purchasing something that they want/need;
