Does anybody here do it? I thought it was strictly a throwback to elementary school phys ed classes, until I googled, of course. There's apparently a very active square dance movement afoot. Anybody here involved, or know something about it?

That's where my wife, Carolyn, got all of her dancing prowesses from . . . she was part of a traveling square dance team for years. She still has, and will not get rid of all those butt-ugly dresses and all those pettycoats. And I cannot say that I have never square danced!

LOL. You should check out the USDA web site. You're right. Hideous clothes!

Oh, I checked it out . . . I literally was cracking up . . . kinda reminds me . . . Care and I love to go shopping, especially for clothes. Many, many times, we've walked by an outfit on a rack or dummy, and I kinda stop her, and hold out the outfit . . . and jokingly say . . . "Hey, great Swing outfit." And she just laughs . . .

It's usually the last thing you'd want to wear to a swing dance . . .

I haven't done square dancing since elementary school. The only thing like it that I have done was a Virginia Real at the studio where I first started out over 20 years ago and this thing I discussed in previous threads called The Rocky Mtn. Stomp that I did with a church group some years back.

I did square dancing, my first experience of that type of dancing (calling out of steps) a few years ago. I loved it. Only did the classes for about five months but it was hilarious. I loved the "community" aspect and I think that is one of the reasons why I love la rueda (salsa dancing done in a circle, with someone calling out the next move). It is an alternative to just you and your partner and more opportunites to flirt :D .

Never thought about that "flirting" aspect

  well, we did just wear our normal clothing so I never had a chance to be put off by the "butt-ugly dresses and all those pettycoats" equivalents for the men

Also, I was actually on safe ground as I was one of the youngest there - 16 years old, whereas everyone else was late thirties and upwards. But hey, if there is music, I am soooo there

I did some international folk dancing for a while, and I ended up going places that had some square dancing as well. (After that I ended up doing Israeli dancing for a while, but I stopped that because--I'm not going to get into it here.) I always liked square dancing in school. At least it was dancing. Given a choice of all other possible dances, well, it's not my favorite. I would like to learn some of those tricky Bulgarian circle and line dances, the ones with the crazy time signatures.

My grandparents have been square dancing for as long as I can remember. When I would visit them in the summer, I would spend HOURS in my grandma's spare bedroom (where she stored her square dancing comstues), just trying on all her skirts and dancing around.

They would attend a square dance camping week every year at the Yogi Bear Campground. I always went with them and had fun dancing with everyone. My grandfather even dressed up as Boo-Boo and partnered a few children through some of the dances...myself included. What a great memory!

My grandmother still square dances on Sunday afternoons. Everyone once in a great blue moon, when I visit, I go with her. I really enjoy line dancing and, if I could find the time, I'd probably pick it up in my area.

I know...I'm so cheesy!

Cheesy and endearing. It's those memories and tradtitions that make us who we are. Very sweet, really. :D 8)
