So what do competitive dancers do, after their careers have ended? I found an organization which focuses specifically on career transition for dancers, but I believe that's more for ballet dancers and such. What do ballroom dancers do? what are the opportunities? Are things different for ballroomers than for other dancers? why? Is teaching or coaching the only option?

You can create your own line of dancewear, videos, studios, makeup; start your own competition; coach, etc.

have babies, show dogs, take up martial arts, travel for leisure, sail boats, go back to school, ...

It is not like the competitions are supporting us dancers financially. It is more like pursuing a personal hobby and breaking even. Most everyones "real" job is teaching anyway, and there is no reason that has to come to an end also.

Pretty much everyone I know that is done competing picks up other personal hobbies to fill their weekend voids, and enjoys the fact that the outflow of cash slows down dramatically... except if you go the baby route.

Pfft, baby route. I think you'll find that if you shop around, you can buy children for much less these days than they used to cost.
