Duke Ellington's Birthday Party
Last Tuesday, April 29, I was invited as a guest to celebrate Duke Ellington's Birthday. I was treated to two hours of Duke's music played by The Brad Kay Trio with Stan Weinstein doubling on trombone, violin and tuba. The experience was a nostalgic trip through my teenage days when I used to play hokey from high school and hang out in my 'Cellar Club (Every teen ager belonged to a Cellar Club in the 1930's) and spin those 78 rpm's listening to those great big bands.
Swing dancers owe a debt of gratitude to Duke Ellington and those creators and innovators of Jazz music that gave us the music to romance with while floating on the strains of their mesmerizing swinging music. The Duke's compositions greatly influenced many of the great musicians that followed him. Satin Doll, Blue Indigo, and Take the A Train are only a few of his melodic swinging compositions.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BIG BAND FAVORITES OF THE 1940' & 1950'S AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THEIR LEGENDARY SONGS THAT YOU REMEMBER? THERE ARE A BUNCH OF US OUT HERE FOR YOU TO SHARE SOME OF THOSE MEMORIES WITH.
