View Full Version : When to buy a Latin shirt

How much weight can a man drop and still have a Latin shirt fit him? I know better than to get a smaller size and say "I'll lose the weight before I wear it," but I'm reluctant to get one at my current size if my fitness goals will render it obsolete.
For the record, those goals are to take off about an inch from my belly.
Taka has some nice shirts with great material that can stand the fluctuation...tucked or untucked. If you're going for the skin-tight fit, you might want to wait a bit :)
You can't get it taken in?

I agree with Joe, taloring is an option.
And most latin shirts have some stretch to them naturally, so you can often find one that will fit you at both sizes. Since you're only talking about losing an inch or so (rather than, say, 100 lbs) it's very possible to find one that will fit you well at both your current weight and your future weight.

Thank you for the advice. I'll talk to vendors when I go as a spectator to a comp in a few weeks.
For the record, this community is wonderful. The support, free exchange of knowledge, and advice makes this a wonderful place to be.

When you go to these comps even as a spectator ask the vendors to let you try shirts on. Most vendors would love to have you try them and usually have mirrors that you can get a good look at how they fit. Their logic is if you try you may buy. Some of these shirts have a lot of give, and you might find something that looks good now and will later as well. You could end up getting something you really like while you are there.
Good luck.
I think you should be more worried about your Latin pants than your shirt. ;) Tight pants are always the source of the dreaded muffin top!

Never. I don't think I've ever seen a Latin shirt actually becoming or even slightly sophisticated on a man. I'm sure others will disagree.
But seriously, it seems that 10 lbs = 1 size as close as I can figure.

I don't disagree. I'm just not sure what you mean by sophisticated...the comment was too sophisitcated for me lol
I've seen some that were way too tight or too this or too that. So I'm really unsure what you mean

I think I agree with you but I'm not sure who's quote you are referring to. I definitely agree that most men's shirts are somewhat forgiving. However, depending on the material used in some cases I need to wear a medium where another I may need a large.
That's what's kind of nice about being able to try a few styles on at a comp.

I'm all for trying out different looks. What would you propose as an alternative?

Well, you do get what you pay for. ;)

Fitted (tailor if needed) black French cuffed shirt. Some type of subtle stripe or herringbone. Silver cufflinks
Tailored black dance vest. No sliding adjustment on the back like most formal vests.
BLack or black and silver tie. Silk. Four in hand knot.
Replace color on tie and cuflinks to match partners dress if you want and it is allowed by costuming rules at particular competition.

Which is... priceless! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/liebe/love-smiley-028.gif

Heh.
And every woman (single or not) at studio seemed to be impressed with fact I tracked down cufflinks to match both pro's dresses (smooth and rhythm). Always worth impressing the women. ;)

You know this style sounded so different to me. But the more I think about it the more I like the different approach for Latin. The tailored vest with no buckle and strap to adjust is definitely the way to go. Ready to wear vests are reasonable and can be easily tailored by any place that does alterations. Cufflinks add a nice touch to any outfit. May I suggest even trying a pre-knotted tie that has crystals, whether on the knot or the tie itself. Definitely a nice touch though without any changes!!!

My pro teacher has a black tie (pre knotted) with black swarovski crystals on the knot. It's subtle, yet adds a great 'shine' on the dance floor when competing. I definitely recommend it to any guy who wants to get in on the 'bling' movement that the girls have, but don't feel comfortable going for the hot pink swarovski..... :)

How do you attach the crystals? I've found places that sell them but not instructions for attaching them. Do you get the ones with holes and sew them on? Glue on flat-backed crystals?

The ties are pre-made with the crystals. They are actually zipper ties, easy on and easy off. Made for dancing primarily. Not supposed to promote web sites on DF but our site does show them if you wanted to see what they look like. You can find them on other sites as well.
NoPink ties though. Only black and white, with different color crystals.

You can actually get regular ties with very small rhinestones too. Place I saw them was a high dollar men's boutique that I'm unlikely ever to shop at, but probably other places too. Most of the rhinestoned ties I see are a bit too flashy for my taste (often the knot is solid rhinestones). But these were very nice, very small stones in a paisley pattern, about 1/3 crystal, 2/3 jet. The jet was nice to give a bit of sparkle but not be too flashy.

Any idea the name of any sites that you saw them at? I too love to impress on the dance floor!!

danceshopper.com and others have the zipper ties with big rhinestone knot.
The more subtle (and expensive) ones I saw were in shop window at Syd Jerome men's boutique downtown Chicago. I haven't found them online yet, but I haven't really looked yet, either.

Heh, ok, went by that shop wwhen I was home a couple weeks ago. One of the ties happened to be turned enough that I could see the maker. Italo Feretti. Havne't found those particular ties online yet, but other IF ties seem to run from $200-2000 (yes, two thousand). A matching bowtie and cummerbund set with diagonal ribbing broken up with periodic diagonal stripes of crystals was $600 even at Buy4LessTuxedo. So whatever the ties cost, they're definitely NOT going to be cheap. :)

Lots of guys have these, though I personally am not as much a fan. But they look good on some folks and I may try them at some point. More than anything else though, I dislike the pre-tied knot, as people have different sized bodies and need to use different ways of tying a tie so that they match the size of the knot with their own body.

Meh, stoning's not too difficult. Do it yourself and save a bundle. :)
