I've seen this phrase on a dozen websites now, and have no idea what it means. What is the skating system of judging a ballroom competition? Anybody know?

Someone who judges/competes may be able to explain better but I believe the skating system is the one used in ice-skating.
Sometimes, the judges will award scores or they will say Pygmalion "2nd" place, Pacion "3rd" place.
This is something I picked up from watching loads of ice-skating competitions. But, in my mind, it is a bit confusing because how can a judge say that Pygmalion gets "2nd" place when there might still be Neo Devin etc to skate :?

Pygmalion, I did a search on Google = "skating system" "ballroom" "judging"
Amongst the results was this one which said that it was first used in 1937. The source? SD on a thread here at DF! So, it looks like SD just might be one of the ones who can explain it

See http://www.geocities.com/danceinfosa/disadics.html#skat for a description of the Skating System of Judging which is used in Dance Sport.

I love watching figure skating too! I went to see a Torvill and Dean show when they came to Glasgow.

If you are the first to skate, you will get 1st place from every judge at least until the next skater finishes his/her performance, right? :P

Yup. That's happening to me more and more often -- when I google something dance related, DF comes up as one of the first hits. Yay, DF!

lol but how do we know that we are not making the stuff up or it wasn't written in the wee hours of the morning and is therefore "reliable" :kitty:

I'm sure we do have our share of swag's. (Scientific wild @$$ guesses, in engineer speak LOL) But the nice thing about DF is that most people are very careful to site sources, and even if they don't people (kindly and gently) call them to task. I seriously doubt much misinformation is being spread. Too many googlers about. LOL.
