View Full Version : If you could dance with any "famous" salsero/a

Pacion

Who would it be and why?

I am not going to be mean and say that you can only choose one  As with similiar threads, they can be alive or have passed on.

Oh, and is there any famous dancer (another danceform) out there that you would love to try dancing salsa with, after they have had a few lessons of course  because you think it would be an incredible experience?

Back in October, I had a chance to dance with LA Salsero Jesus Morales. Yay! Alex Da Silva also comes to mind. Pretty much any NY Salsero would be awesome to dance with. As for famous non-salsa dancers? Hmm....Probably Alvin Ailey or Gregory Hines. :D

I agree! I think Gregory Hines would be incredible. I remember seeing him in White Nights and although I think I have only seen that movie once, it left such an impression on me!

I wouldn't mind giving Valentino a "dance test" I have heard mixed things about his tango dancing ability  and Jerome Robbins, of West Side Story fame (I heard he was very temperamental, a perfectionist, which could be interesting :D ).

Ok, last night I danced with Luis Vasquez :D ! Eventhough the style they teach (and the people follow their style) sometimes intimidate the heck out of me, the man himself was very down to earth......I was immediatly at ease (I am an old-school/Cuban girl, L.A. style still feels relatively foreign to me  ).

I found that the greatest salseros are more interested in dancing WITH me, during that song, whatever styles/timing/levels I am :D ! Now I am just looking forward to dancing with some of the NY big names (ok, maybe not right NOW) as I am totally unfamiliar with NY styles/timing.

Let's see: I've danced with Gupson Pierre based in Singapore (he's great), Robert Charlemagne (I didn't really follow well back then ) from UK. Leon Rose came to Melbourne, but I didn't get a chance to dance with him.

Then there were the musicians I've danced with: Oscar D'Leon, Johnny Rivero, Alfredo de la Fe, a few from Plena Libre, and most of Sonora la Calle/Lady Salsa.

I would LOVE to dance with Robby Rosa (my dream since teenage  ) from movie Salsa!

You know what...? I'd be more interested in dancing with some of our own DF ledgends such as Boriken, Salsarhythms, SD, Sabor, Brujo plus many others  !

Luis, IMO, is one of those few teachers/dancers who truly dances according to the ability of the girl and takes her to another level. How do I know? Because I experienced it  I danced with him on some of their visits to London and people came up to me and said "Wow! You looked great. Didn't know you could dance like that" The funny thing was, neither did I  Seeing him and Joby dancing together is also something quite special.

We ain't gonna be able to see that easily any more. This trip downunder is their last tour together, and I believe they will do one more show in L.A. Salsa Congress in May. They are going through divorce  .

That's a good question. First of all I would love to learn to dance Cha Cha Cha like Stacey Lopez does. And then I would love to dance with him! But first I need to improve my Cha Cha Cha skills considerably, otherwise he will not even consider to dance with me

And on the list of the real famous people it has always been Patrick Swayze. He was the one who actually brought me to salsa via the Dirty Dancing movie and sound track. He is not one of the famous salseros but he is a wonderful dancer!

Pacion
03-15-2004, 01:30 PM
Patrick Swayze can mambo  The thing is, I suspect a lot of women would love to dance with Patrick Swayze. This means there would be a huge queue  and I don't like this "take a number and join the queue" business, so I will dance with someone else and when the queue has hopefully died down, I would then slip in for my dance

A famous salsera: Sandra Bullock (Okay, I admit that she might not necessarily be famous for her salsa).

Another would be Karen Hardy.

Why? I reckon they'd be fun.

Have you ever seen her do salsa? I'm curious as it's always interesting to me which ballroom people can actually do salsa and which really "can't" -- i.e. can be technically proficient but don't quite have the salsa "feel."

Joby Vasquez, Edie and Josie Neglia.

I would also like to dance with one of Johnny Vasquezīs partners (I forget her name). I almost asked her a week ago here at the salsa congress. I was waiting for a slow salsa to come on and it never did! The DJīs were only playing 15 minute turbo salsas that night... NO!!!!

Oh yeah, Iīd like to dance with Michelle Pheiffer also. I know she canīt dance salsa but who cares...

OK, we know that the DF has a HUGE volume right now... so why don't we start by saying that we could start a seperate Forum for the DF dance tour... and that we'd have a thread dedicated to the "X" sponsored tour which we'd regularly post in during our travels?

I don't know ladies, I've seen Alex di Silva dance, and with what's her name liz lira, a pro is not necessarily the best dancer, the best dancer is the one that makes you feel good about dancing and dances with you not with everyone who's watching. the music tells you what to do, the dancer who can transfer the music into body movement and make you feel it and have it enter inside you is the best dancer, and for all I care, that could be a, heaven forbid, beginner or inetrmediate!!!

Welcome to DF, Gregorio.

I totally agree with the sentiment of what you're saying - I find connection to be so much more enjoyable and fulfilling versus how "big of a name" dancer, one's partner is.

And on a side note, as someone who has met and danced with Liz Lira, I do want to say that she's one of the nicest, most down-to-earth "salsa celebrities" that I've ever met.

Since I'm a modest sort of girl ( :P ), I'd never dare to dance with someone well known or anything. I am very, very tiny.
So I'd have to say... my salsa teacher :D , who is such an amazing lead I don't really understand how I'm doing the steps I'm doing; they sort of... happen! He doesn't dance with students very often outside lessons, but we danced a merengue once and it was one of the best dances tiny little me has ever danced.
Feels like dirt on dancing shoe heel here... :)

Hi Twilight_Elena! Welcome to Dance Forums. :D

Welcome. Nice avatar there with that AT pose. :) I think...

I'll dance with anyone. I don't want to dance with famous salsero/s or salsera/s. I want all my dances to be dances of connection and oneness. :)

I feel quite lucky. I've already had some of my dream dances.

I was at the UK congress in September (my first) and spent most of the time in the early hours dancing with the Tropical Gem girls (Sandy Ramos, Alyra Lennox and Daniela Marrella) every day. I didn't really know who they were until then!

Also had a couple of dances with Edie the Salsa Freak, Luda (Latin Motion Australia), Johnny Vasquez partner (forget her name, she was sooo hot), Mia Torres, Salsara and a few others.

Also got invited into a Rueda with the pro's. That was really cool!

I have to say that out of everyone Sandy was the best as her following, spins (4 spins every time) and body movement are amazing. She even made me look good. Which is saying something. I am only intermediate and thanks to her I got to dance with more pro's than anyone could reasonably expect. Probably had 30-40 dances over the weekend, the majority with Sandy. She was really nice.

A lot of the dancing was in the pro circle on the carpet which would have been scary if I had thought about it. When I got home I had to pinch myself. Just hope I have the bottle to do it again next year.

When I get to my next event I guess I'd most like to dance with Melissa Fernandez, Janet (Raphael's Cuban partner) and Joby Martinez.

I know this is HOPELESSLY parochial, particularly as I am not a salsa dancer and don't know any of the big names whatsoever. But I never tire of watching my teacher, Felix Chavez, dance salsa. He does it differently than anyone else I've ever seen, it's more subtle, less sloppy, and 10,000 times sexier than any salsero I've seen in a movie or a club. And dancing salsa with him, even with my fledgling skills, he's so flirtacious, so playful, so naughty, so fun, so abandoned. I'm not very good (I took salsa lessons from him for six months and I think I cried at every lesson trying to learn that Cuban hip action, to feel the rhythm, feel my body, get out of my head and just let go and be earthy and sexy and flirty), and I don't think dancing with me was all that fun for him, but I'd rather dance with Felix than any other man alive. As most of the tangueros in Los Angeles have learned (to their chagrin), when Felix Chavez walks into a milonga, other men simply cease to exist.

And on a side note, as someone who has met and danced with Liz Lira, I do want to say that she's one of the nicest, most down-to-earth "salsa celebrities" that I've ever met.
Let me second that! And she is simply amazing to lead!!

It's "Salsa Dancers", by Bill Brauer. Here's a linky. (http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/PD--10100144/Salsa_Dancers.htm?ui=86FFB48EC5CF44469F5B13E364A6F 66A)
They do look sort of AT, don't they?
And thanks for everyone's welcome. You make it so easy for us newbies to adapt.

first of all, hi everyone, i haven't posted here in a long time but it's great to be back. i just got back from nyc and took a class with mr. eddie torres and got to "dance" with him as he lead me through the pattern -- whoohoo! my dream lead would be fernando sosa of tropical gem, but i'd like a few more skills under my belt first. all of the tropical gem people are amazing, and nice too. anyone going to the rome salsa congress in may?
oh yes, i wanted to meet boriken salsero in nyc but wasn't able to reach him, maybe next time.

For Mambo, it would have to be Polanco! He exemplifies dancing Mambo as I have always understood it to be.

And if I could only Bolero with Barishnikov I would die a happy woman!

Rome in May? Haven't seen any info on it, do you have a link? I was looking at Belgium around that time, but Rome sounds pretty nice.

ummm...ive had many a famous salsero/a dance, its really exhillirating because you get so nervous that when i dance ok, i always ask for a 2nd dance so that my nerves have calmed slightly and i can dance better, but if it goes really badly or i get a bad vibe off the lead i usually run away after the first dance. heres my dances if i can remember them all, Edie the Salsa Freak, Al Espinosa, Terry Lewis, Sai Lee, Renee, Henry Knowles, Frankie Martinez, Patrick Mussendijk, Brian Van Der Kust, Geraldo & Magdalena, Orville Small and Mel C. If there are more that i cant remember right now; ill add them when i do.
