I suspect you know the answer to this one already
I would wear a dress "cut up to here" and "cut down to there", probably in cream or red and natural coloured heels (as I seem to be into those at the moment 8) ).
Perfume? Dolce & Gabbana loves me  Honest! I get heaps of compliments when I wear it :D . If it is a particularly breezy evening, I might wear Opium - I know, it is an oldie, but I love my oldies
And you

Ha! I was just talking about this with my teacher the other day. I showed up unshaved, rumpled, without enough sleep, no cologne. And I told her the honeymoon must be over. Because when I first started with her, I'd make sure to shave and dress carefully, and wear cologne, and the whole nine yards!
Still, usually, I do try to dress nicely, even for a lesson. Black is my color of choice, with deep blues, reds, purples to accent. I'll wear Drakkar, or sometimes Essence (by Mont Blanc), occasionally Mambo or Pierre Cardin (usually Cardin if I'm mostly dancing smooth, for some reason--don't know why exactly).
For Valentine's Day dances, I've got a red shirt which I wear under my black vest, and my socks are black with little red hearts on them. I've got matching boxers, but I don't suppose that was the question.
And my first teacher just about lost it when she was teaching me a swivel step and all of a sudden heard jingle bells.
"Is that your phone?" she said.
"I don't have a cell phone; it's my socks."
From then on, she'd always check to see if I had my musical Christmas socks on, and if I did we'd practice swivels so she could hear whether or not I was bringing my ankles together!

Hmmmm, ahhhh, Hmmmmm
To be at my most impressive... Hmmmm, ahhhhh...
If I had to go all out to a dance, Usually a "black tie" event (which I rarely go in black) I would have to wear a black or an earth tone suit with a vest. The shirt is never a solid color, so I look for some kind of print that I might think is Hot. A tie hidden behind the vest. The socks usually, if I don't closely match the shirt, they'll match the color of the pants.
Shoes, either a pair of black 1 1/2'' heel cuban, or a pair of 2 tone dark brown and cream, or a pair of shinny dark brown shoes.
Depending on the venue, more latinos than not, I either leave a Goat-T or simply shave from the jaw-bone line down. If the majority of the poeple are non-hispanic I tend to go clean shaven.
The hair, if not a bit wild, I comb it back...
Cologne... I got a few, what ever happens to be closer to my reach, that's the one I choose.
Man, there are times that I am jealous of the ladies. They have so many choices of things to wear to look elegant. Us guys, we are usually left to a suit. It can get boring! But I've been looking for an early turn of the century suit. Hmmmm... Halloween anyone?

I always wear black dress slacks, and a nice sport dress shirt (short sleeved) that is usually a darker shade. I just bought several new shirts that feel good to dance in, and I've gotten a few compliments on them...in fact I'm heading back to the mall today to pick a few more since they are on sale. :)
I always wear a white cotton t-shirt underneath, use a bit of cologne...I forget the brand I use but its a spicey kind of scent. I always sport a fresh shave...but as I recently decided to grow a beard I always make sure its well trimmed before going out dancing.
Shoes - I just have my trusty black oxfords...but after many months of dancing they are getting a bit worn...time to get some new ones pretty soon.
Boriken, curious to ask about the more/less facial hair depending on the amount of Latinos. Is it more accepted among them? It is so strange how people react to you when you have facial hair...then again I do enjoy seeing this reaction for some reason. Lots of ladies are saying they like my beard, so its staying for now. :P

LOL @ bordertango.. but pls. remember to park the horse outside and NO GUNS!
Hmmm pretty cool styles described so far.. a few good ideas to try too..
me.. i usually dont sport a certain look for any period of time.. like to change alot cause for some strange indirect reason it effects the way i dance or move .. helps my mood be different and makes me feel better.. BUT i still cant get myself to dance in a tie and suit! cant handle the heat generation cause i'm on the floor all the time and sweat dont mix well w/ with ties and suits for me..
but at this instant .. if i was goin out salsa-ing .. top down i'd go for:
Hair wavey & longish.. a little wild
Clean shaven
i'm naturally tanned and dark look so:
All white lightly torso hugging shirt (Valentino brand).. long sleeves.. there could be patterns on it or plain smooth material with a little sheen... no to tucking the shirt under the pants..
Black and/or White pants (Valentino brand) classic style (not tight and not loose) long going down a bit wider covering most of the shoes.. smooth material
Shoes Black and/or White leather tango shoes
For scent.. either a Givenchy Py - Kenzo - Davidoff Goodlife - Issy Miyaki

Hmmmmm, with the current trends of casualisation I have not been doing the whole works for sometime. That doesn't stop me from being one of the best dressed salseras around though  !
I LOVE my all white ensembles. Usually a well-fitted lace top with wide legged cotton pants, tied with one of those triangular lace shawl thingies with long fringes....always matching colour of the pants.
White cotton dresses too. Think Santaria.
I also have a large collection of salsa-friendly (read: overly flamboyant)dresses to chose from. Lots of black in different textures/designs, or florals that are only fitting for a Latin theme occassion.
*geez, my descriptions sounded really boring*
A few designer-inspired dresses, such as the one Cate Blanchet wore for Oscar a couple of years ago (black full length with sheer back & oriental embroideries), or a Versace-inspired black slinky number with pink laces.
Simple Armani-type little black dresses and a JLo low-front are favourites too. The costumes I used to make for myself were mainly Ungaro-inspired.....lots of frills & flounces in tropical florals.
A unique but simple necklace.
No pantyhose or stocking, unless for special effects. I like bare legs.
Shoes: just my basic black or skin-tone mules.
Perfume: these days I tend to wear DKNY or Glow from JLo. I also love J'adore and Green Tea.
There is a salsa formal coming up. I might wear my 1950s original vintage ballgown in pale (almost white) pink embroidered cotton organdie with lots of layers......

I find it interesting that all the posts mention fragrances. Years ago,
I wore Polo (green) – but I broke it out of retirement when I started
dancing. I guess in my mind old school dances like the Fox Trot,
Waltz and swing call for a classic old school scent.
Otherwise -- black from head to toe.

What an interesting read!
Im ALWAYS in a black skirt or pants, I dont feel comfortable in any other color! As for top...its always fitted (want to make sure my waist is clearly visible so theres no excuse for an "accidental" grab in a basic move!)
I have an array of colors, pink is a favorite though.
My shoes are always my flesh colored open toes, Im just so in love with them at the moment!
Perfume.....either J'adore or Moonflower, and I only ever spray it underneath my clothes. I hate dancing with a partner and you come away smelling like them!

I'm with you there! I have two black skirts that I love, and I either wear those or a pair of black pants, with fitted tops (usually red, blue, or dark green). I have open-toe black shoes, and a pair of dressier shoes as well, but they hurt my feet so I hardly wear them.
I don't usually wear perfume, but I occasionally use body splashes from Bath & Body Works (my favorite)!
When I really want to dress up, I wear a red dress that was my grandmother's. It isn't exactly vintage, but it can pass for it. And I love the way the skirt moves! Very cool! :D

Depends on how you feel about them I guess  .........I just love the way that I can still smell him (that special someone) after your dance, on the way home, in your hair when you go to sleep, and on your pillow when you wake the next morning........... :P

Wow, you do have it bad, don't you?
No, I know what you mean, even with someone you're just friends with, not romantically involved. I mean, what's the point of dancing with someone you don't really want to get close to? I usually pick up my partner's scent on my hands. :)

It is so strange how people react to you when you have facial hair...then again I do enjoy seeing this reaction for some reason. During my testosterone filled years I realized that the American Girls all wanted to see me clean-shaven, yet the Latinas I met all wanted to see me with some kind of facial hair. Growing up in PR you find out that ladies tend to think of a clean-shaven guy as a guy who isn’t ready to be a man. Hmmm They equal hair to a post-puberty man not just a lill kid. Even the adults with no hair (body wise) are thought of as never reaching puberty, hence little kids still... Its funny but weired as heck...
Well, I was so into the Ladies at a time in my life that I began doing what they liked according to the venue. I got so bad about it that it became a habbit. Now, I don’t even have to think about doing it. I just happens, Latin venue some hair, Mainstream venue clean shave.
I’m not saying that all women from X group likes Y look, but I just happened that all the ones I met did so.

Ahhhh, I absolutely love the smell of perfume on my hands when I'm going home. My Lady wears a perfume which I absolutely adore. When I go home and its still with me.... :D :D :D
Even if I don't find the person attractive, I can find the perfume HOT, I will love for it to be on my hands. I just love a great smelling perfume. It has nothing to do with the person, but the goose bumps that I get just from the smell. The perfume will never bring images of that person I’m not attracted to, but will indeed take me for a wild orchid fill field ride… Ahhh, Smell is such a wonderful way to get your creative juices flowing…
But watch out if one of them stinks... Ahhhhhhhhh
On the other hand, I don't apply perfume directly to my hands then rub it on my body. I apply it to my left inner wrist, bring both wrists together and rub, then I bring the wrists to my neck and rub there a bit as well. I hate the over use of perfume and have found out that it is best for someone to get close to you and get a nice surpirse of a great aroma, then to smell the person 3 blocks away.

Ok ok ok! I will begrudgingly admit that there is one paticular person I dont mind smelling on me when I get home, but unless Im dancing with him for the entire night I usually have a mix of smells that I cant distinguish!

I dress how I feel or for the event,
Sometimes dressed up, sometimes more casual.
I wear different colors every week;
The same every week would be dull to me.
Sometimes I dress to impress the judges,
Othertimes for comfortability.
I like wearing, new with new, new with old,
Old with old, and spicing things up a bit!

My update: remember that ball I was talking about....? It was on this Saturday just past.
After a couple of days work, I restored/altered my 1950's vintage ballgown, which I had bought years ago, never intending to actually wear it until now.
I had opened out the sides and put in lace-up loops, then laced my sides up with ribbons, corset style.
I managed to find a real peticoat to really make a merigue out of my dress  ! Then got brown lacy-patterned velvet gloves & a brown velvet choker with a pink rose cameo on it.
Perfume: Glow from JLo.
Cover: vintage faux fur throw in antique white.
Shoes: my skin-tone mule, as nobody can see anyway. Comfort comes first.
Good news: it's quite danceable too (even for salsa)....! A few guys just couldn't resist turning me round & round, just to see the dress swooshing around  !
But-- it's VERY difficult to do multiple turns (L.A. style) while landing ON time  ! I am not a fast girl & this dress really slowed me down. Casino style turns & arm patterns are all fine, as long as the guys remember to give some room for the merigue    !
8) Needless to say I had a ball....! 8)
