Hi folks! :D
Welcome to another thread of DWTS!
Rumba and Samba this evening ... and it seems all the lesser dance skilled stars are gone. Could be interesting.

Karina looks HOT !
Ayuh, and really liked that dress! :raisebro:

Mario seemed to start off well, missed a hop at one point, seemed to stand around a tad towards the end.
9-9-9 from the judges ... I'd give him an 8.

I liked that dress too. Was cute. Went well with the song..
I wonder what it say for DWTS that we comment like this on a particular dance...and we are dancers...

The show made a big deal out of Pricilla's lift, but not other's lifts.

Judges didn't look favorably on her Rumba. Her routine was techniquely difficult, missed a turn, lots of heal leads, fluid in places yet not in others.
7-7-7 from the judges despite Len seemingly expressing his feelings slightly stronger than the other two. I'd give her a 6.

Wow. Marissa really did a very good samba. Off in a place or two early on, yet over all, it seemed evident that she really put in a big effort to look as well as she did.
I'd give her a 9!
Judges scored ... 8-8-8 ... huh? :?

I'm starting to wonder what the judges are watching because it sure isn't the same dancing I'm seeing.

Crisitian's rumba seemed ok, but he really didn't seem to flow quite right, lack of rumba walks, and a little to much standing around. I'm going to rank him a 6.
Judges had him at ... 7-8-8.

Marlee seemed off in about 5 places. She did ok, but not good enough for better than a 6.
Judges gave her ... 7-7-8 ...
Am I being to hard on these stars this evening?

Ok ... Krisiti did her rumba with a bit less stiffness than soime of her previous outings, yet she seemed a bit off at the beginning and a bit off at the end, with at least one spot in the middle, too, ... 9 from me.
Judges gave 9-10-10.
Hey, I mind have actually been kind to her this week ... and Len and Bruno gave her 10s.

Shannon's beat seemed to be slower, but her flow seemed to be off. She seemed tentative in several places, not completely smooth in shaping, I'd give her an 8.
Judges scored her as follows ... 8-8-7 ... uh boy ... and they gave Marissa all 8?
Sheesh ... and here I was looking forward to the evening. I'm hoping Jason does so well that they have to give him a 10 so I don't need to be so negative towards the judges with the final dancers.

I think Len is right on with his comments regarding Jason ... for me there was an imbalance between posing and dancing for him ... 9.
9-9-9 from the judges ... well ok, gave him the same.

Warning, warning, warning ... this is a hi-jack ...
The SO's homemade strawberry cheese cake ... 10! Outstanding!
May be someone already mentioned it in previous threads, I think the music is much better this season!

Shannon looks like she has barely aged since "American Pie", but she doesn't seem to have the stamina for the faster dances. Again she looked completely winded tonight.
There's a famous scene in "American Pie" where a nerdy guy does a little striptease dancing in front of Shannon. That guy dances better than most of the people tonight, sadly. Mario and Kristi did the best jobs, but even they were not totally convincing. The rest were just disappointments...

Now we see why they have never done Rumba and Samba before. Too hard to learn that fast. I was disappointed in all of them. Lots of posing to "cover" no hip action.

They've done rumba and samba before. Just not yet this season.

They've had "latin night" with rumba and samba for the last three or four seasons. It's never great, but this group was pretty underwhelming. I will except Kristi, who I really liked. She did add an emotional dimension tonight that has been lacking.

Lacking, in my opinion. Kristi is good, no doubt. Yet, Edyta's guy did an equallly good, if not better, job and received lower marks. Though I thought she danced well, I thought K's marks were too high. I realize it is a TV show, but one of the two most difficult things for us [judges] is to mark someone everytime as if we are seing them for the first time...something these judges don't even attempt to do.

Was totally unimpressed and dissapointed with the dancing last night. Usually Kristi, Jason, and Shannon are my favorite ones but even they didnt do very good tonight. Oh well...will see some good dancing tonight at least!

Ditto, although Kristi was good at conveying emotion during her Rumba, I didn't see much Rumba. It seemed to be more like movement from one pose to another and little dancing in between. Maybe, I need to watch it again.

I thought Marissa danced better than other people who were awarded 8s by the way. So who goes tonight?

I agree that Marissa danced well and she should be grouped with the others that are at the top of the list since none of them were fabulous. I think Priscilla Presly goes tonight.

This week's kids danced a lot of better than last week's.
Anyone know what exactly is the format of this kids' competition? How many contestants, how many rounds, heats, etc.?

I usually have an idea of a winner in my mind by now, but I'm torn with these dancers. I thought that they stepped up their game this week. I do think a couple of the routines were a bit harder than what they probably should have been though. But they still did a great job.

I have to disagree about Kristi's rhumba - I thought it was awesome. Also think Marissa's Samba was the best of the ladies. Agree that Priscilla should have gone, but darn - she should have gotten "extra credit" for doing the splits at her age!

ITA. I love Kristi's rumba sooooo much! Certainly one of my favorite dances in all six seasons. I've watched it at least 15 times and just can't stop. It had a nice flirty / romantic vibe and the music helped to create the mood. Kristy looked so gorgeous and elegant in the lavender dress. One of my favorite parts of the routine was when he removed the ribbon from her hair and she reached up to him. JMO, I could see real emotion and passion in the look she gave Marky and expression on her face. Now, if I could only get my dance partner to look at me the same way! :)

I would have to disagree with you. Rumba is supposed to emphasize contrast between quick movements and slow, controlled ones. That's why I agreed with the judges concerning Apolo and Juliane's final rumba which had all the fast actions but very little of the slow, controlled ones. Marky and Kristi's rumba really exhibited the speed contrast very well. And it appears they were going for a romantic rumba between two new lovers hence there was a lot of touching and close contact cucurachas. I thought the emoting was fantastic. I must admit, the routine gave me goosebumps! They very clearly characterized the different roles of man and woman in the rumba.

Sorry. I must disagree. I did not see enough contrast. Actually, I believe that all of the rumbas danced were much too hard, with not enough romance. Rumba is a beautiful contrast, not of fast and slow, but of movement and stillness...and the passion of the dance is found in the transition, not in the poses. I might have tolerated it better if I had seen even the slightest Latin movement (cuban motion) in her rumba, and if I didn't think she is favored because of her background.
Having said that, I do acknowledge that she is a good dancer, a good performer, and is doing well on DWTS.

I see the final between Kristi and Jason, with perhaps Mario challenging. Everyone else is going to go. Does Kristi have an advantage over Jason? Of course, just as Mario Lopez did, and Joey Fatone, and the public seems to prefer the person who has had no dance background whatsoever, so it could be that Kristi loses to Jason. On the other hand, the producers brought her on,as they brought Mario Lopez, so if they think it's fair, then it's fair for me to vote for her and want her to win. She is so graceful, so charming, so talented, so lovely to look at, and such a good ambassadress for anything she touches.

I do think that Jason has the power and the fanbase to win it all, but I worry about Edyta torpedoing him with choreography. I was really glad that Len told her flat-out that he wants to see Jason dance, not stand there while she plays Cirque du Soleil.

It seems to me that Kristi does not lift up her ribcage enough in the standard dances. The frame looks too small and compact. Or could it be Marky's fault?
Another Elizabeth
04-16-2008, 03:50 PM
I agree, although I would characterize the problem more as occurring in the arch of the very top of the back, above the ribcage. I suspect that Mark does not have the background in teaching standard to pass this along well - it's a pretty tough concept to get across, and I believe he's primarily a latin dancer. I do have to commend him for not making her tip her head and break the neck line to (incorrectly) try to create the illusion of an open frame, though.
I just went back and looked at the YouTube clip of their tango to confirm my impression, and I was struck by Mark's right hand - it's way too splayed out for my taste. Confirms my impression that the details of his standard are somewhat lacking, especially compared to his latin. He's a good dancer, but I don't think he has the little habits of dancing standard.

I just watched Kristi and Mark's rhumba again, and I love it more each time I see it. I actually think it could be the best dance I've seen on all the DWTS's shows. Gosh, I don't think Carrie Ann would give Fred Astaire himself a 10.

I have a feeling that the outcome of this "compitition" has already been decided..
With that being said i use the word compitition very very loosely cause all this show is is entertainment.. I also think that if this series continues into another season that it's time for new judges.. It's starting to feel like ice dancing did many years ago, with the judges mind made up before anyone actually steps onto that dance floor..

That's the feeling I get also, although it may just be that the judges are trying to overcompensate for Sabrina being booted off early last year by giving superficially high ratings to those they think "should be" in the final.

I only just got around to watching Monday's episode. (Better late than never!)
Kristi did very well. Not her best of the season, but the music was not great (or at least not to my liking) either, and I don't think it helped. Convincing passion, smooth dancing.
My second favorite was a tie between Marisa and Tony and Mario and Karina.
Marisa and Tony--Yeah, okay, there was some stuff you could nit-pick in Marisa's dancing if you were so inclined. There could have been tighter leg crossing on the voltas, for example. But it was so JOYFUL! And between the shimmy and the booty-shakin', I felt like I was at a party! I feel like Tony has really stepped up his choreography this year and made the best of what he had to work with! (Such a difference between this and the too careful free dance with Stacey Keibler during season...do I mean 2 or 3?) Way to go, Tony! And their song really worked for them!
Mario and Karina--Okay, it was hard for me to concentrate on Mario because Karina was so sexy. WOW! But from what I could tell, Mario did quite well. He has hip action!
As for the rest:
Derek and Shannon--Derek did a great job choreographing for Shannon, and costuming did a great job costuming her, but this was one of those weeks where her limbs almost seemed too long for her to control. I agree with the not enough bounce comment the judges gave her, but I also felt like her arms were doing the classic "Mom throwing her arm in front of child without seatbelt" move.
Jason and Edyta--Yeah, not enough rumba, too many "Wow, Edyta sure is flexible" moves.
Christian and Cheryl--I couldn't tell whether he didn't have much hip action or whether the untucked shirt obscured it, but I fear the former.
Marlee and Fabian--not their week. Some awkwardness.
Priscilla and Louis--Not their week, but any week where we get to watch Louis is a wonderful thing. I'm also a bit of sucker for that song.
