View Full Version : Suggest a song for a floorshow routine.

I’m putting together a floorshow routine with a girl over the next few weeks, and it was obvious from the very start that our “thing” we could play on is an incredible natural chemistry we have. Other show couples at the studio are doing highly athletic or lifts-intensive routines, or alternatively classical ballroom beauty. What no one else is doing, that we could pull off easily is the “make the audience red” gig.

So, I need a Rumba, and it needs to be really sexy. It also needs to be a reasonably “pop-friendly” song, since music that is too obscure gets so wrapped up in being arty sometimes that it just detracts from the dance.

I was thinking Madonna’s “Justify my love”, since that song is, well, hot, but wondering if there’s any other recommendations out there?

Well it's not as pop-friendly as Madonna but REAL sexy in my opinion: La Playa by Chayanne (NOT a ballroom CD) although that song is now appearing on Ballroom CD's. My favourite version is still the non-ballroom CD version.

I am doing an am rumba to 'sexy' by black eyed peas....takes some music editing. It depends on how 'racy' you can have the lyrics be. Im just trying to decide what to wear for it ...hmmmm

I should mention that R & B won’t suit us, either. Neither of us “look” R & B or rappish. You can see what I look like in the photo thread that’s a few pages back, and the girl I’m doing floorshows with is Japanese. Stunning, but not really BEP material.

I’m not overly worried about the lyrics, whatever works there, but ideally I’d like a really earthy, sensuous melody that we can kind of just ooze too. If that makes sense.

Thanks for the recommendations. Keep them coming :-D

Ooh, this is a really good song. We might see about this one!

other am rumba options:
say it right: nelly furtado
bedroom dancing: cruel intentions soundtrack (sexy and pop ;)

hmmm i dont dance international...but some of my 'sexy' boleros (which i guess you can use for int rumba) are:

give me the night : randy crawford
bleeding love: leona lewis
secret: maroon 5 (that one would be very sexy I think)
Im in chains: Tina arena

Temptation by Diana Krall
Need You Tonight by INXS

I've danced rumba to both of these songs - they are sexy, but in different ways.

First one that came to my mind was " The Look Of Love " by Dusty Springfield, but that song is more classical romance. Hmmm let me look real quick...for some interpretive ones not necessarily rumbas but somewhat sexy with a hippy twist "Love Is All Around " The Troggs, "You Showed Me" The Turtles, "Je T' Aime...Moi No Plus" Lane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg. Rumba/Cha Cha interpretive "Lets Stay Together " Al Green or "Midnight At The Oasis " Maria Muldaur. More interpretive " Misty Blue " Dorothy Moore, " Into The Night " Benny Mardones.

Right now, I can't think of anything as steamy as the Madonna song you're already thinking of using. I can think of rumbas like " Wicked Game " and such, but nothing that just reeks of sex. Hope you find what you're looking for, and hopefully I gave you some ideas. If it's sex, it looks like, for now, Madonna's your best bet :)

Wicked Game was another one that sprung to mind immediately, actually, kinda a more masculine version of the same mood that Justify My Love gives. Plus, Chris Issac is my favourite music artist.

But it’s the girl who is very much the focus of a Rumba, so we thought that the more feminine track would be better. Then there was also the idea for “Wild Horses”, which is more romantic, but the singer’s voice is quite sensual. It’d be a more subtle effect, which is often times better, though obviously lacks some of the raw impact.

I’ll check out those ones you suggested too. Thanks very much! Brainstorming drives me nuts.

Now you've got me really thinking. " Hey Girl " by Billy Joel is kinda nice too. Lots of long notes/verses to milk :)

Terence Trent D'Arby, "Sign Your Name."

a really earthy, sensuous melody that we can kind of just ooze too. If that makes sense.

How about:

Barefoot by Ofra Haza from the Kirya CD.

There's of course Diana Krall's Temptations oft played but one of the all time sexy, earthy numbers that oozes, etc.,

I REALLY like "Puerto Rico" by Cristian Castro. Not sure of the lyrics as I don't speak Spanish, but I think you can dance a very sensuous rumba to it. I'd use it for a showcase myself (if I ever get that far).

"Temptation," Diana Krall
"That's the Way Love Goes," Janet Jackson

I think if the chemistry is there, don't force it! Pick a beautiful rumba song and keep your dancing clean and hit nice lines. That will heat the room up. :)

Oh and BTW - I'm going to shoot down your idea for the Madonna song because I do not think it is a good piece of music for exhibition. (Sorry!) I think the music is a bit too mellow from beginning to end, and the vocals are whispered/breathed, which rarely comes over well on standard "stick the CD in and hit play" sound systems.

Oh, the idea wasn't to force anything, but rather emphasise it right.

For example - my comp partner and another guy are doing exhibitions using Robbie Williams' "Let me Entertain you". The routine itself is dynamic and packed with lifts and strength work. It's a really great routine (in the same vein that Victor and Hanna's exhibition routines were great). The music doesn't make the routine seemed forced at all, but it definately highlights the energy that couple go for.

The dancer with picking a gentle or romantic rumba is some of the impact of the steam will be lost. It becomes more of an "awww" dance rather than a "phew" dance, to overly simplify things. Obviously with show pieces picking the right music is important, and something like Fields as Gold, as beautiful as it is as a rumba, just wouldn't achieve what we're looking for.

Nice point about the Madonna song, though. I'll admit I haven't heard it over a CD player in an auditorium, and if we do end up using that song, this is something that needs to be investigated. However, I disagree with you on the appropriateness as a song to rumba to. There's some definate sharp highlights in the song that work amazingly well for rumba lines, and the breathless tone to the lyrics is, well, kinda the reason we're considering the song. It's just a very sexy song.

Of course, the reason I made this thread was because I realised it also wasn't ideal, so I was hoping for alternatives ;-) Hopefully some of the suggestions here by all you wonderful people will help! :-D

ha ha funny you mention Victor. He never really learned how to wear a shirt. It got old quick.

I just never saw the point of it. The audience was surely too busy watching the insane positions Hanna was being held in to realise Victor wasn’t wearing a shirt.

I liked that couple though :-( Not enough quality exhibition couples around any more.

Assuming it's the same track (I'm not sure this version is by Mia), here's the perfect answer to the two quotes above:
