Hello everyone,

I'm new to the dance forum and I just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a 22 year old theatre student at South Dakota State University. I've always wanted to take dance, but I grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere. Well, now I have the opportunity to take some dance, and I'm on a personal mission to get myself into shape so I can fulfil my dream.

Thankyou again to the people that answered my first thread...I found your responses very helpful!

Feel free to write or msg me any time....I'm pretty open and always looking to meet new people (eventhough my schedule is pretty packed).

See everyone around the forum!

I look forward to seeing you around. btw, you don't have to wait until you're "in shape" to dance. Dancing will help you get there. See you around DF! :D

Hey Norsie-

Nice to hear from you and also great to hear that someone in theatre is interested in dance! The number of supposedly serious actors who don't know a thing about dance and who don't care to learn is appalling. Many kudos to you!

Best,

Genesius

Welcome... so... umm... what's da dream?

Hey everyone, thanks for your warm welcomes :)

In response to Swing Kitten's question, I've just always wanted to be a dancer since I was a little kid. I took some dance when I was really little, but then the teacher left town. I've struggled with depression, eating disorders, anxiety, being overweight (from the depression, eating disorders, and anxiety), chronic fatigue syndrome (brought on by epstine barr syndrome), I had west nile at the end of last summer and that really does a number to a person!, plus I have the symptoms of fibromialgia.

Dance seems to make all of this feel better, so really, my dream is to dance for myself to help bring myself back into health and to express myself. I really want to study pointe and tap...there are a few other things I'd like to learn too like step dance and ballroom dancing.
So yeah, that's pretty much my dream. I don't really want to become a professional dancer.

So yeah, that's about it...
Thanks again for your welcoming :)
See you guys around the forum!

I'm not sure I've been here long enough to be part of the welcome team, but I think I need to start saying hello more often. Here's a little dance in honor of someone newer than me

welcome!

No such thing as not being around long enough to welcome soemone else Christina! But, just so you feel comfortable, I herewith anoint you a full member of the DF "welcome team" with all of the privellages and obbligations such may entail... :D

Norsie,

Another warm (and somewhat belated) welcome to you! I too have been through many of the issues you have mentioned...and dancing is certainly a wonderful way to express yourself.

As far as getting in shape, we have a few threads going on...I will look for them later for you unless someone else beats me to it! Hmm, I should post some before and after pictures of myself...most people don't think they are the same person!

There's lots of good folks here, and we're certainly glad to have you aboard! :D

Best wishes,

ScorpionGuy

So true!

To be able to dance--in the midst of uncertainty and self-doubt, to have just one dance even, and for 2 or 3 blessed minutes, there is order and connection and understanding. For that one dance at least, the we are connected to the world:

Labor is blossoming or dancing where
The body is not bruised to pleasure soul,
Nor beauty born out of its own despair,
Nor blear-eyed wisdom out of midnight oil.
O chestnut tree, great-rooted blossomer,
Are you the leaf, the blossom, or the bole?
O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,
How can you tell the dancer from the dance?

Wishing you all the best,

Genesius

I'm in theatre! :P

Of course, I remember that (or should have remembered that) from the What do you do for a living thread--sorry, Swing Kitten! Salsachinita has also done a bit of theatre--it's just nice to see people in (nonmusical) theatre who take dance seriously. You do set design design, don't you? Am I remembering right? I'm directing "Tartuffe" this fall on a budget of $700. Got any ideas for a set?

Well, yes, actually the table thing is the giving me the biggest headache. My tendency is to go with an open table, no tablecloth, so that "hiding" under it is conceptual. I want Orgon's reaction to be part of the scene. Do you think that's too burlesque? I'm planning to go minimal the whole way.

with a $700 budget (does that include labor?) I'd say minimal is the best way to go! I would think it would be fun to incorporate the table cloth into the action. With Oreagon (is that right?) concealed When Tartuffe enters and his wife pulling it up on the side (and possiblly using that in her seduction) as she clearly wants him to clearly see T for what he is as quickly as possible as she finds T so greatly repulsive.

just a thought. I've never seen it in production but have read years ago.

LOL! The labor is gonna be me, the set designer, and any favors we can call in!

*That's* funny! Business with the set too!

I'm sorry I'm running off from this conversation--I've got a show tonight, but I may want to send you a private message some time to pick your brain some more. This will be my directorial debut in Nashville (unless I do "Sylvia" this summer) and I'd like it to be really good.

Thanks for the advice, SK! Have a fabulous night!
