Christina75 brought up a question in another thread about the handedness of our members.

Anyone left handed? Are left handed people really more sensitve or creative or what not? What are the handedness 'stereotypes'? How does it effect one's dancing?

Good question Christina! (from Alabama)

Hehe! I feel a google coming on. LOL. and btw, you left out ambidextrous people, natural and trained. I know a couple ambidextrous people. I'm extremely right-handed, for the record.

I can do most tasks with both though I am right handed.

One of the CT leads that I know is left handed I think the only thing he does differently, that I know of, is that he wears his watch on his left wrist anyway so that it doesn't get caught up on the follow.

I'm right handed - my left hand is pretty much hopeless, so I'm not even close to being ambidexterous. Maybe I should try dancing the lead's part more often, might get my left a bit more co-ordinated!

I'm right handed, but I wear my watch on my right hand. It confuses people, especially when they talk about the look-at-your-watch turn!!

I can see why that would be confusing... what made you decide to do it that way?

Honestly, I'm not sure.

But it might be that summer that I spent working at a berry farm on Martha's Vineyard. I didn't want a bad tan line on one arm so I switched my watch back and forth every day. It just seems to have stuck on the right wrist. Now it's a habit.

Not that I wear a watch now, since I've got my mobile phone permenantly attached to myself  ........but I used to wear my watch on the right too (I am right handed) because I used to wear LOTS of bangles/bracelets on my left. It became a habit after a while.

On a separate note, I am one of those people who can't tell left & right easily. It's a problem when I am driving......my passenger will have to include hand signals to make sure I do the right thing   !

Even if you have trouble with rights and lefts it shouldn'ty be that hard to look both ways :!:

Although I'm right handed, I use my left quite a bit. Learing some martial arts is a good way to find out which side you use and to learn to balance out that weakness. For instance, I prefer a right hand...but I'm also somewhat left footed...sounds strange I know.

I used to talk to soccer players about this...some who use both feet can be rather tricky to play against. ;)

I'm a lefty! :D and if i'm a specimen of an average lefty then yes we are more creative. i sculpt, draw, paint, dance, do theatre, sing, and play bass clarinet(well sorta). it afected my dancing in the begining because my left was my more flexable side, but thats now changed, i can still do some turns/ steps, better on my left though. 8)

I am a lefty but not artistic at ALL. I am as logical and geeky as you can get. I am a lefty stuck in a righty's mind or maybe it's a righty's mind stuck in a lefty's body or maybe I am just plain LOCO.

I think lefty's are charming, debonair, suave, intelligent, sexy, kind, compassionate, flexible, imaginative, resourceful, provocative, challenging, stimulating, delightful, amiable, attractive, charismatic, fascinating, enchanting, polite, understanding, sophisticated, cultured, dashing, beautiful, courteous, heroic, and modest.

just an observation...

I am a lefty!!!! I might be a bit jaded since I am a pianist, but the only time I really have trouble when dancing is keeping my head in the correct position. I am constantly looking right. It feels awkward to me looking left especially in the Tango. Maybe that is weird  I don't know. I also have trouble when shaking hands. I have to really concentrate not to extend the wrong hand.

I don't know if i'm a stereotypical left-hander but I do love photography, can draw reasonably well and also enjoy other 'artistic' hobbies, can't play a musical instrument although i'd love to, play bat and ball sports (baseball, cricket, golf) as a right handed person, play tennis left handed, am a bit of a snag, metrosexual or whatever you want to call it (i'd like to call it being civil, human(e) or similar). However, I work with computers all day and love the analytical side to my job but if you call rebuilding PCs and performing associated tasks creative then maybe it's part of my trait.
By the way, I learnt many years ago how to tell your left from right. Simply hold up your left hand with your thumb parallel to the ground and the forefinger at a 90 degree angle from the thumb. Hold it in front of your face and this will look like the letter 'L' (for left) :D

coincidentally,

if you point your index finger in the air, and point your thumb perpendicular to your finger, then put the back of your hand to your forehead.... you are making the well known sign for "Loser"

I know two people who were forcedto develop right handedness, because their cultures did not accept left-handedness. Is that ambidextrous? Meaning, can you learn to become ambidextrous, or do you have to be born with it?

I can do many things left-handed - write, shoot a gun, shoot a basketball, shoot pool, etc., but recently I picked up a left-handed guitar, and for the life of me, I couldn't play it. And it wasn't my left hand that was off. The left hant picked the strings ok, but the right-hand fingers just couldn't get their sh-tuff together! Absolutely not enough coordination for that.

I've never found anyone willing to teach that way :(

Ok, I have a question.....Which wrist do you wear your latin costume bracelet on when competing??? I just realized that I would wear mine on my left wrist like I would my watch. Is there a "correct" arm....does it matter???

As far as I am aware the only significant variables are what compliments your costume and won't prove problematic as far as dancing with your partner.

I'm left-handed and it has definitely shown up in the way I think and do things! It took me THREE years to learn Algebra 1 in high school. Not that anyone should think I'm stupid...far from it. I graduated with a 3.9 GPA. On the bright side, I'm very creative although it tends to frighten my friends as I can come up with some pretty crazy things to do. I think it's interesting to note that all of my friends are right-handers...I wonder why that is?? Maybe one left-hander is all a group of friends can handle!

If you think one leftie is all a group of righties can handle come over to my side of the town fashionlady!! Ithaca, the number one emerging city in a recent national survey and in the top ten in many others!! Sometimes I'm in the minority, as a rightie!! I can handle you'all! :)

And a belated welcome to df as I've been out dancing. I came home because I need a couple hours to wind down and hav eto be at work at 9:50 a.m. tomorrow. Must get a few zzs as I';m going out saturday night too! :D Why aren't you out dancin' too?

Hmmm....tempting, Sagitta, but I live way south of NY! So you'll just have to take my word for it that I'm too much for the righties to handle!
And thanks for the welcome. I'm not out dancing because I haven't met any guys that actually know how to dance anything besides the "grind" which is not something I will do with guys I don't even know. I'm from Alabama, where I have many guys to dance with but they are all two hours away from me now. :(
So what kind of dancing do you do and what is your fave?

Actually I have seen some of the grind threads, makes for some interesting reading! I used to think I would never be comfortable grinding with someone until I met a guy I really liked. It was great with him, even though I had only known him 5 days.(we met on 7-day cruise) I spent time talking to him and got to know him before we danced. But as far as being in a bar or club and having a perfect stranger trying to attach himself to my body...that is definitely gross:!: To me that's a mild version of being a call girl...without pay.
Okay, I realize I've gotten way off the lefty-righty discussion so I'll stop here!

Yes. There's nothing like a seven-day cruise to accelerate the pace of romance. 8) Hmm. Note to self: book seven day cruise, pronto.

Badk to lefty-righty: Right-handed people take a lot for granted, like notebooks and scissors, for example. There are left-handed versions, but they're expensive, and very hard to find. :(

fashionlady
04-13-2004, 12:27 AM
Yes there is something about a 7 day cruise!!! I'm not usually so fastpaced in my romances. I like to take things slow normally. I do recommend a weeklong cruise! It was fab. I didn't even want to get off the boat..partly because I knew the romance would be over :(
Incidentally, I read recently that a large number of lefties(I forget the exact number) die every year from using products designed for righties. Makes me think twice about what I use! Not a month ago I had a pathetic moment with a hand-held can opener....I could not get it to cut the can to save my life! then when I did get it to cut it wouldn't cut the whole thing so I was trying to finish the job with a knife. It took me THIRTY minutes to open a can of soup!!!! By that point there was more soup on the counter than in the can. "sigh" it was just one of those days.

its okay SD, I'm constantly getting into situations like that...I'm used to being laughed at! It's the norm everyday for me. Just yesterday, I set my stove on fire when I dropped some oats under the pot I was making oatmeal in. My dad was visiting me but thankfully he was in the bathroom so he couldn't freak out. "whew!" Anyway, by the time I remembered where I kept my drinking glasses and poured some water in a glass, the fire had gone out. So no damages! :D And tomorrow, I will probably have some more "adventures"
