just a little plug for the Great Race...which was also this weekend...held in South Bend, IN...it is part of a fundraiser for literacy sponsored also by the Elkhart YMCA...the comp has new organizers, Lisa and Nichy Vegas, who have taken great strides in improving the floor size and other aspects of the comp....the comp is now part of the dancesport series and is one to consider in the future....

I am a great fan of bringing ballroom dance into fundraising venues and the like... Sounds great F!
We are debating traveling with my sis this August to the Sr. Olympics where she will do distance bike racing... This year (for the first time) they are doing an exhibition, ballroom dancing ,as part of the events.... Anyone in the SF area might want to consider this to bring ballroom dancing to this wonderful event. As an exhibition event there are no qualifiers that one has to attend, like the other sports.

They are very nice people, I attended their competition in Cleveland last year.

You mean San Francisco? They haven't done a good job of publicizing it, then -- I had no idea that the Sr. Olympics were in the area, let alone that they were planning ballroom dancing at it.

I think that has been part of the problem with Great Race as well, though I strongly suspect that will change under the new organizers...

The first couple of times I received postcards advertising the Great Race I was confused...I didn't know if it was something related to the Indy 500 or if it was ballroom dancing competition!

exactly and the website was bizarre as well...you had to do alot of hunting to get to ballroom...the event involved kayaking and running and all sorts of other aspects and so it really didn't work the way alot of event do...OTOH a good thing about it was that you had free reign to shoot your own video in the daytime...not sure if that will continue but it has gone that was thusfar and was pretty cool for folks who otherwise couldn't afford video...also since it is in a basketball stadium on the University of ND...there is a ton of nice seating and pretty good dressing and concessions

Yes Laura, San Francisco in August and just like Fasc describes not a great job at making it known to the public.

Do you have a URL or something Jan? I ask because NorCal usually has a competition in August and it would be kind of stupid to schedule it for the same day as the Senior Olympics ballroom exhibition event....

I will ask my sister where the site is, and post it here for you.

We were really thinking of going to Great Race this year, but scheduling just didn't quite work out. Good to know - we'll have to put it on our calendar for '09!

It was nice to meet you at the Great Race, fasc. I think that's a nice comp; the floor was better this year, for darn sure!

Could they be combined for greater effect?
