I have taken coaching lessons with my pro regarding our competitive routines and have found it to be extremely beneficial even when the coach wasn't a top tier competitive pro or a judge. I was wondering if others had done this, why you did this, what are your opinions on this subject and if you did do this then how often you do it. I am looking forward to responses from all whether you have done it or not and/or whether you think it is a good idea or not

we do this as often as possible...mainly b/c my pro knows he doesn't know everything and he can't always tell what is going on while he is dancing with me

I take coaching’s as often as my finances will allow (At least 2 sessions a month). They generally are very useful.
Any teacher, no matter how good they are, cannot always see everything that you are doing. It’s always good to have another set of eye’s.

Thanks Sunshines Partner - I also miss attending them. I hope to attend the next comp in Verona. I have new Rhythm and Standard Pro Partners.

I've taken with most of the visiting pros that come through. Though now that the studio is bringing them in more often I'm being a little more selective. I think we're getting about three coaches every two months. I used to take a double with every coach that came through... Can't really afford that now at this increased frequency. Now I typically pick based on if the coaches strengths align with a topic I'm working on/can spend some time developing -- or if I'm more in need of a new routine, presentation sparkle, or technical clean-up

I've done this a few time with the coach who also was coaching my teacher and his professional partner. I got a lot out of the lessons and would do them monthly if I could, but we haven't had the opportunity in quite some time :(

I've taken a couple, one in particular because of the way the particular judge marked me. It was very helpful, but I'm not entirely sure at this point how much I can get from outside coaching--ie I'm not sure I'm advanced enough to really benefit as much as I could. I've still got lots to learn from my pros!

I think it is important to have a plan in mind for what you need. Don't buy it because it is on sale. Buy it because you need it. Here are a couple of scenarios:
1. You need a coach that is especially good at helping develop couples
2. You are always getting a man's perspective and need the opinion of an expert lady
3. You need to feel what it is like to dance with a top pro in addition to your male partner, so you can see what it feels like and get some ideas about shaping or lines that you didn't have before.
