Kat,

That is, by far, the loveliest of any of the new style dresses I have seen. (I do not like this new froo froo trend. Yuck!) Are you sure you want to part with it? You always wear such beautiful flowing gowns with clean lines and unbelievable stonework. In my mind, this black dress is an elegant acknowledgement of the current trend without compromising your excellent taste in gowns.

I wish I were three inches taller and my Standard pro didn't dislike black dresses. But my having a growth spurt is actually more likely than him changing his opinion there.

Black would be about the only way to get me into a foofy dress, though. I saw one for sale at Yankee that looked like an overdecorated cupcake. In pink.

I have considered buying this style of dresses so many times. Each time the thought that this style would go out of fashion quickly stopped me. However, whenever I see it advertised, I am tempted. But I know I will get over it eventually, again.

People said that about leggings with big shirts in the 80s and look what's back in style now.

For the record, I love this dress. I saw Samina wearing it at Yankee and drooled. It's couture and it rocks! Someone could walk a fashion runway in it and it would look great.

The fact that you all are trying to get rid of them?

But in all seriousness, considering what Alessia wore at Blackpool, and that the whole cake-dress trend started about a year after she and Sylvia Pitton started wearing those types of dresses, I think this trend is quite dead. I am sure it'll take another 2-3 years for it to die here in the US but still...

Oh, and leggings are pretty much only being worn by Lindsay Lohan now and even she sorta stopped lately...

Katarzyna
07-23-2008, 04:54 PM
I am getting rid of everything after a little while :) eventually. when you have more than 10 its kinda the thing to do ;)

I think in the US its only on the way in, it will probably die here much after its dead intrnationally.. but it at least lived long enought to make it here.. some trends die internationally before making it to us...

actually wasnt sure it will survive long enough to show up here, but seems to be sticking around strongly.. I see more traditional dress makers slowly starting to make them.. Few I talked to mentioned wanting to see if it stays around before they go in that direction.. slowly they are getting convinced.. seeing some makers in US start those as well... the trend is too fun to let it pass and possibly lucrative.. Because when someone wants one of those they will find a way to find one somewhere.. but its much easier if its locally available for tryon etc.

US is behind the styles.. pro field seems more independent of trends usually it seems

whenever i wore kat's black beauty, people wanted to know who made it, etc... to the eyes of a lot of US dancers, the style appears to be fresh & appealing rather than stale.

I think it also depends on color. I like black but pink just looks like a huge cupcake. When we were at millennium, Elle Dance Studio had one that was red with animal print. As gaudy as this may sound, it was absolutely stunning.

yes Alessia & Sylvia started this trend. However remembered there was a silver cupcake dress Alessia had was reviewed by Dancebeat as "one of the worst dress" and I recall the reviewer said in his article something like "can't believe a champion wears a dress of such poor taste"...

I do like the simple non cupcake dress Alessia worn at this year's Blackpool much more...

Here, I believe this is the silver dress one of the Dancebeat reviewer rated as "worst dress he's ever seen a champion has worn"...such a shame I forgot the reviewer's name.

Whether you like the dress or you don't, it's still memorable and isn't the whole idea of competing to stand out from the crowd?

And, maybe in your opinion, it's standing out in a bad way. Ask yourself this, how many months ago was Blackpool and you still remember the dress? I think this woman has done her job correctly. :uplaugh:

Was it the "cupcake" design that was disliked by the reviewer or was it the many different fabrics/patterns happening on one dress? While I'm not a huge fan of lots of ruffles/tiers, when done tastefully, it is nice on certain people. This one, IMO, is not one of those...

And yes, it is memorable ;)

717As outrageous as the silver dress is I loved Alessia's pink cupcake dress. We used the idea for Abby's fuschia dress and although I know lots of people weren't crazy about it, it worked well for her.

I don't recall that reviewer specify the exact reason he disliked this silver cupcake dress. IMHO it was definitely stands out in such a bad way - and it was more memorable since worn by a champion. Guess if it's an avearge skilled dancer with this dress instead World Champion, this terrible dress could been destructive to that couple's marks.

Pink a lot better than that silver. The contrast pink color of Abby's dress is nicely designed.

I also personally don't like dresses with too much ruffles and tiers, I agree with njdancegirl mentioned in her early post, when designed smartly and tastefully, it's nice on certain people.

I don't think this style is flattering if the dancer is a little bit "bottom heavy" since the huge ruffles will only make hip area bigger. This style is more flattering on someone super skinny and wants to add some "volumn".
