I am very excited.

I'll be there Wednesday night. I am doing laundry tonight, packing tomorrow and leaving after my classes on Wednesday.

As to when to meet... How about Friday immediately following the opening ceremony. Say 6:45. We'll meet in the far right hand corner of the main room (as you walk in through the main doors).

Ummm, I wasn't planning on it!

I've taken a bit of a pounding from life recently and thought I'd just go and dance without worrying about keeping an eye on my camera rig the whole time....

On a different note, any idea what happened to all of the social dancing Damon? On the current scedule it only looks like its sceduled for Thursday night... :(

Yes, Care and I are heading out early Friday morning . . . hope to be there by noon.

Pam, I've met a couple of these guys and will gladly do the introductions. Is Wayne still going?

Damon . . . 6:45 in the R back corner sounds great to me . . . see you there. And, what about the social dancing? I was concerned about that as well . . .

Jonathan, I'll bring my digital if you want to leave your gear. I plan on getting lots of rest and relaxation this weekend by being on the dance floor. I think we have some s**t to get out of our brains?????????

I just alked to my neighbor who was there this past weekend . . . high 20's-low 30's, and it's supposed to cool down and rain there this weekend - maybe snow. So bring something warm if you have to go outside.

ScottieK and others . . . we'll see you there!!!!

there will be plenty of social dancing... plenty. I'm working on the dj schedule, trust me, plenty of dancing.

Basically the entire time not schedule is all social dancing, and a lot of the time when there are things scheduled there will be music playing somewhere for people who want to dance.

I'd suggest packing an extra pair of legs... you're going to need them. :)

SDsalsaguy
03-23-2004, 12:04 AM
Glad to hear that Damon... the original schedule I'd seen had social dancing Thursday, Friday, & Saturday nights -- in three rooms (for Lindy, WCS, & Salsa) *each* night! That was easily half of my draw...

The way it'll work is that inbetween each of the comps there will be social dancing, and there will most likely be social dancing in at least one other room during the comps. The only time I know for sure that there won't be social dancing available is during the Show and during the day workshops.

Make sure to film a lot, and I'd be happy to host the clips on my server if anyone want to put the clips on the internet. (No limit on space, and no limit on bw, so if you want to put it out, no need to encode to crappy quality (unless your upstream tells you to :)

Most of the venues that I have been to do not allow video cameras, especially if they (a vendor) are making and selling videos of the event.

I am bringing a digital and it can take videos if we need to take one . . .

Vince A
03-23-2004, 11:50 AM
I don't think so . . . sometimes, even parts of that are videoed! I have many videos from events that show social dancing, just so people can see themselves on tape.

Hi Vince, yes, Wayne is going too. There is no way I'd drive that all by myself, especially in bad weather! I was hoping it would stay sunny this weekend, but my luck didn't hold out. I'm bringing warm clothing for sure. The last time we went to Tahoe for the Magic Mountain event, it snowed for the drive home! We had to get chains for the car. I'm hoping the weather will clear up on Sunday for the drive home. I hope... I hope.

Video taping will be allowed during the general social dancing. There will be no cameras of any type allowed in the Show at all. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the contracts with the performers and videographers will not allow it. Thank you for your understanding.

Video cameras will not be allowed in the competition room, but still cameras will. IF you have a digital camera that is capable of taking video, please respect our wishes and those of the competitors and restrain from video taping.

SDsalsaguy
03-23-2004, 03:01 PM
Thanks for clarrifying the policies Damon. The no videoing of the show/comps/workshops is, of course, understandable. I'd just been rather shocked at the idea that social dancing couldn't be videotaped.

I know Vince, this is for others who may be attending.

There will be at least one room open, maybe two (still checking) that will be open for social dancing except during the workshops and the Show. When the competitions are over, video cameras will be allowed into the main room.

So while there will be social dancing inbetween the comps in the main room, there will also be social dancing the entire time competitions are going on. With social dancing before, during, inbetween, and after the competitions, there should be social dancing available for a stunning amount of time.

Okay so I just finished the dj schedule for the Lindy Hoppers... we've got a minimum of 27 hours of social dancing to dj's and another three or four of Barbara Morrison for both Lindy Hoppers and West Coast Swing Dancers.

SD, Dnice, Vince. It was great meeting you all there. Wish there could have been more of us. Thanks SD for being at the meeting place on time. :D It was really nice meeting and talking to you. Thanks for the dances both of you (SD and Vince). I really enjoyed them. SD, your west coast was very good. Keep it up, you'll be great in no time. I was a little under the weather for most of the weekend. I guess the altitude made me feel weird. My feet hurt a lot sooner than I expected and I didn't dance too much on Sat. How about the Show? Wasn't that great? I didn't get to say goodbye. Sorry for that. We didn't stay on Sunday. We ended up leaving right after we got up. Made the drive much nicer. Hope you all made it home without any problems. :D :D :D

It was great meeting you too Dancergal. The altitude got to me also... I was puttering out after one or two songs in the 200bpm range. Like Sylvia at first I just thought it was me getting old, then I remembered that we were over 3000 in elevation... I felt better about myself even though the energy didn't start coming back.

Thanks, Pam . . . I really enjoyed dancing with you too!

I think the altititude (at 4,415 ft) made many of us feel weird . . . tough getting oxygen a that level if you are not used to it! I also had the "sore feet," as all of my dance shoes that I brought (three pair) felt very tight. And as I found out this morning, my right big toe is broken . . . I had a girl stomp on it after landing from an aerial right next to me. I can barely get my shoe on . . . it's in a small splint right now, and the doctor said take it easy for at least 6 weeks.

We didn't say 'goodbyes' either . . . we also headed out right after we got up too and had breakfast with SD! The drive was much nicer going home with the sunshine and all. Did you see any "highway patrol" on the way home? ;-)

03-29-2004, 03:24 PM
No highway patrol this time. :D :D We drove at a slower pace and stopped a few times. It was nice going home and very sceanic. I'm so glad there wasn't any snow storms this weekend. We were very lucky. I hear Thursday evening traffic was bad from some people that drove up Thursday.

I think I'm feeling almost back to normal now, Vince. Up there I seemed to be really tired all the time and my throat and nose was really dry. I guess you get used to it when you live up there. On a good note, we saw a couple that we met at the Mountain Magic event in South Lake Tahoe in November. They saw us dancing in the lounge area one evening before the convention started and wanted to know what kind of dancing we were doing. We told them all about the dance convention being held there, so they bought a day ticket to watch. They were so impressed that they started taking dance lessons in Reno where they live. They went to the Reno event too and spotted us. They thanked us for leading them to this kind of dancing and they are having a great time learning. How cool is that? :D :D :D

I said earlier that I thought the show was so-so, but I totally forgot about the plane . . .

Picture if you will, on the world's largest thatrical stage, a complete, full size Boeing 737 mock-up, complete with running jet engines (Fake, but very loud and effective) . . . with two guys on each wing, clogging (maybe some tap dancing included), as the plance taxied in from back stage to the front of the stage. TALK ABOUT IMPRESSIVE.

The dancers were terrific, yet the singers were off-key, and nearly put me to sleep. I sing and play a musical instrument, so I know when someone is flat. But then, they were dancers . . . showing their other talents . . . guess maybe I'm jealous too???

No, I did not attend this event. I am attending the DanceSport Competition this weekend...I am soooo excited!

I live in Piedmont and I am laughing like crazy becasue I am terrible with computers, as you saw. I am laughing because I am old fashion...not old.
I still believe(tongue-in-cheek) that bad people lurk around fun internet sites like these and seek to prey on us unsuspecting happy-go-lucky people. To those ends I could "never" give my name out on the internet.
My husband would have me comitted( privacy isues, nothing more) and then I would not get to dance much beyond "shadow dancing" at my insane asylum...

Actually, when I read your post I excitedly ran and told him that a very nice man on the internet wanted to know where I lived and what was my real name! LOL again...

He looked at me with his head tilted sideways and s-l-o-w-l-y said "cyber-people" are "cyber-people" and you HAVE to keep them that way...ok?

I tried to tell him that I really felt it was ok and that you guys were sooo nice. He said that when I win my big dancing championship (within 2 years) then I could give out my name, social security number, date of birth and anything else about ME that I want.

Anyway... I see his points and I acknowledge my cyber-fears.

Just call me "Oaktown", I'll answer. 8)

Just to toss on an extra layer of paranoia:
What we see of the people on DF are the posters (for want of a better term). What we don't see are the lurkers (quasi-official term). Most lurkers are fine folk too, but not all. In warning her 11-year-old cousin (female) about walking alone to school, my 17-year-old niece said "all guys are bad", to which I protested: "Only a few guys are bad, but it only takes one bad one to ruin your life." Most cyber-folk are nice, but a few aren't and that's all it takes to ruin your life. So then, yes, we always need to be prudent about posting personal information in the clear.

Actually, it came from one job (I'm a programmer) where we kept our data files on diskettes. My user name there was dwise (standard computer center policy of first initial plus last name, like in the Dilbert strip about Brenda Utthead) and that is how I labeled my diskette. When I expanded out to the second diskette, dwise2, I relabeled my first one accordingly, dwise1. It wasn't until I spoke its name that I spotted the unintentional pun. So when I needed a screen name for AOL, I remembered back to that diskette. In heated discussions, I've been attacked and derided by my opponents for my screenname, but you can see that its origin is quite mundane.

However, my words of caution came in part from personal experience when I was a leader in a well-known youth program. Great program that teaches very worthwhile skills and principles which I not only agree with fully but also live by. However, the corporation that runs that program does not live by those principles and directly violate them and their own rules and published policies in order to commit outright bigotry. They made a practice of spying on their volunteer leaders in online fora, the transcripts of which (taken out of context) they submitted as evidence in federal court. My own statements there pointing out that their actions violated their own rules and published policies were used to expel me with extreme prejudice. Nearly cost me my marriage.

So then, I know from personal experience that you never know who's lurking nor what their intentions are.

What!?! And spread panic in the DF ranks? Just kidding. I'm almost always aware of what I'm typing and who could be (probably is) reading. Even when I type mean stuff LOL.

I think that's why each of us goes through that ah ha moment. Seriously. The panic passes. Don't sweat it. The vast majority of the world has no idea who you are, and they don't want to know. I've found that I have to be most careful when telling personal stories about close dance acquaintances. I never lie about what happens, so I have no fear on that level. But when people do bad things to me, I try to gloss over the gory details, just in case their friends (or people who don't need to know the details) are reading. Better that way, I think.

Also, given how many lurkers we have, I suspect most people know just how open this forum is. Joining can be a scary thing.

Jenn,
Did you see the one with all the pictures of you . . .

Not recently.

It pleases me to see soo much nice good cuddly healthy sweet paranoia. Be paranoid. It's fun! And then one day when they come to take you away for making a stupid joke about bombs and cia and whatnot you'll realize that paranoia isn't enough. They already know who you are and where you live and what you just ate. And they're not afraid to use it against you. You'll just have to hope that they're occupied with larger fish.

So I agree with Oakland. Just dance! It's fun and healthy and it'll make you forget about the paranoia for a few.

Oh, and to those who participated in the Reno event. I'm not jealous either. I'm going to Herrang in a few months and that'll be more fun than you had. So there!

I know what you mean, Oaktown Dancer. My username has thousands of references, so I have to add dance forums to get my stuff. But I have googled a couple other usernames. Holy cow! Everything you've ever said comes up in google. Terrifying, isn't it.

I got my ah ha moment early on. I posted something (don't remember what, now  ) and before I could retract or fix the typos, two people from oppostie sides of the planet had quoted me and responded. Yikes! Talk about the fishbowl effect. *shudder*

I have a net friend who's sig contains the statement `<his full name> here, as in real life.' I very much admire this gentleman, and have borrowed his posting philosophy. I don't post anything that I wouldn't say in public to a person's face, and I also post under my real name (but not my full name - I am a little cautious, not being an ex-marine).

Cheers
Sarah <here, as in real life....>

Do you use those little footnotes when you're talking to people? I could see you starting a conversation, then pulling out a little cue card with the explanation written[1] on it! :D

[1] By the way I think its very clever. ;)

As alfborge says, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not really out to get you...

Aww, you're so sweet :kissme:

Believe it or not, yes. Sort of. And it's not just me. New Zealanders are apparantly the second fastest (after the Irish) speakers of English, and we also have the tendency to `speak in parenthesis'. What I mean by that is that we will chuck a clarification or a side remark into the[1] middle of a sentence, and then resume the sentence as though nothing had happened. Now that just looks ugly and is difficult to read written down as a series of nested parentheses [{<()>}], so I have taken to footnoting instead.

[1] Just felt in need of a footnote. I'm better now.[2]

[2]nothing to see here. Move along[3]

Don't you mean a snide remark?

Thank you for the clarification! [1]

No actually for once that wasn't a typo[1]

Hmm. I speak in parenthesis as well. I wonder if that means I was from New Zealand in a former life? (raised eyebrow smiley here)

Hmmm... I'm going to guess that all it means is that we all really don't speak English.

Yes, I find myself embedding parenthetical remarks a bit too frequently (whether we're talking at work [I have a paper and a poster to do {actually a presentation tomorrow}] or "socially" [this board, email, IM {Yahoo, AOL, etc.}]... I think that's because I get distracted too easily).
