View Full Version : Pivots!

I think just about everyone has a favourite step they love both dancing, and watching be danced. Whether it’s lunges, oversways, scattered chasses, or something like a Paso walk or bota fogo in the latin.
For me, it’s pivots. Nothing is more exciting than to see a pivot sequence of four or executed well, with both couples really moving and... flying around one another. I love the feeling of dancing them well too, it’s wild movement, but it’s also very stable and a great example of teamwork, or perhaps even the ultimate example of teamwork.
Pivots work in just about all standard dances too, but are easily the most beautiful in the V. Waltz, where a good couple, with a single pivot sequence, will take a whole end of the floor. It’s also the most difficult to execute in the V. Waltz, but well worth it.
So, what’s your pet step?

I'm a fan of oversways, lunges, and other such "picture lines." They feel good to do, look awesome when done right, and just exude "ballroom."
Audiences love 'em too.
Must agree with jwlinson--for me it's the contra check, especially in waltz. It feels so good, and looks amazing too.

I like the look of picture lines...but I love the feeling of; nearly anything in VW, fallaway and slip pivot to a double reverse, and the feather of course

btw...it would probably be better to entitle this thread, steps you love or something like that (for reference purposes later)...and, I beleive we also do have a thread like that (as well as steps you hate)...if anyone wants to go back and see what they wrote or resurrect them

Picture lines are definitely my favourite. But I like this group....lunge into right, draw up to left slip to face centre, fallaway reverse slip, over spin double reverse spin into a throwaway

Fox: Weave back to tumble to inverted tumble to throw away oversway.

That last one, but instead of oversway, a contra check!

*makes note to try this*
I love a spin turn or a impetus turn moving into a weave especially in a foxtrot

Pivots go in love and hate column for me. LOVE watching them, esp. when you get multiple couples going down floor doing repeated pivots. hate DOING them, because I can' get themright and I get frustrated and upset and it just doesn't go well. :)

Pivots are still a work in progress for us. We haven't quite mastered the art of going straight down the floor with them yet. Watching them done properly, though, is amazing.
