Hi how's everybody doing? Well I will be competing in an amateur salsa contest april 3rd and I'm wondering what kind of advice you guys have. I'm an advanced beginner/intermediate dancer and my partner is a beginner. We are just doing it for fun and thought it would be a nice experience to have. We need a 3 min routine and I have most of it done, I just need to mix the music but I need a song that has a good beat to do freestyles (shines) any recommendations? Thanks for any tips

Good songs to freeStyle... Usually heavy on percussion.. and some which are not but just call to be shined to. Most heavy percussion songs are way longer than 3 minutes.

Here are a few you might want to check...
La Loteria - Andy Harlow. 3' 23'' but feels like 2 minutes.
Descarga - Bobby Valentin 3' 44'' This is just that, a jam session, they have about 45 seconds worth of vocals and the rest is jam. I don't think it is powerful enough but might be worth a look.
Mama Guela - FANIA's version - 2' 57''
Indestructible - Ray Barretto - 4' 11'' It gets really going after about a minute and a half. (sorry I know you said 3 )
Fuego A La Jicotea - Marvin Santiago - 3' 20'' - this song is half and half to me
Mambo En Paris - Richie Ray 3' 40''

If you can cut the songs then check out Ray Barretto... His stuff usually says shine.

You might also want to try some Lebron Brothers or Eddie Palmieri. I know a lot of competitors use Palmieri's 'La Malanga'. But if I would ever compete, it would be Lebron's 'Mi Fracaso', or Lavoe's 'Aguanile'

I've always wondered if La Malanga is the same song as Ajiaco Caliente. I think it is, but I'm not sure... Hmmm... Homework for me...
