I would like to do my first competition in standard, but I noticed that dresses cost on average $1500 and that is cheap. Any alternatives? Any good dressmakers? I live in New Jersey, so locations in NY, NJ for a dress, or a reasonable web order?

You could rent a dress rather than buying.

What level and what division are you competing?

Usually the more expensive dresses are not needed at the introductory levels; for amateur/amateur couples in beginner to intermediate events they aren't even allowed.
