Check out this cool history of swing link I found. It calls ECS, hustle and shag "pseudo" swing styles. In particular, this article states that ECS was invented in the early forties by ballroom teachers to combat the popularity of lindy and keep their students loyal (and buying more lessons, no doubt. )
What do you think of this? Does ECS swing? Or is it just a wannabe dance that pales by comparison to the real thing?

Kinda like what happens to dogs whenever the American Kennel Club gets hold of a "breed"? Hybrid vigor is not a myth.
On the other hand, dance is as fun as the dancers allow it to be. True, the big franchise studios tend to codify (with explicitly economic goals in mind) but the people who teach in those studios are just dancers. The worker is worthy of his/her hire.

If we choose one swing dance variation of the entire genre/style as the original, then sure, we can call all other variations pseudo swing. As for whether ECS swings I think that it does.

Yes, ECS swings, especially if you use the triple rhythm and count 1&a2&a3, etc. It's very similar to your 6 count lindy patterns. Also, I think it's possible to make your single rhythm ECS "swing" also. It's just the ability to dance behind the beat instead of on top of it.

on beat is good. the swing comes from the beats not being evenly spaced. 1 &2 3 &4 5 6
swinginstyle, I've never seen ECS counted out this way: 1&a2&a3
would you mind explaining your method and how the steps fit into the counts?
east coast swing has a six count basic no? (not that it always has to be done in six counts)

I was wondering that myself--counting in triplets would seem to make the first two steps of a triple into almost a stutter step and really emphasize the third. :?
