This is an adjunct post to the dress code.. think this might " hijack " the others code restriction debate.
Heres food for thought , and opinion ( like I need to state that ! )
Over the yrs , the changes in the world of dance (Comp. primarily ), has been geared towards, Music... Content.. Technique... and the ever changing " look " of ballgowns .
So, ( and I am a traditionalist ), why do mens fashions remain still embedded in the 19 th century !.
In the T / Arts world, color in tails etc ( and latin ) is near mandatory...so.. how do you think the public would perceive Standard, being competed in varying colors of tail suits ?... and why would you want status quo ?
Well, as a bloke I don't think I'd want to compete in anything but black. Call me a traditionalist.
Sure, a good tailsuit costs a fortune, but I don't have to buy one every year or less like the ladies do. I'll give up the pleasure of having a different costume every few months in exchange for not having the hit to my wallet. :)
Besides, can you imagine having to color-coordinate with your partner every few months?

I haven't been in this long enough to call myself a traditionalist ;-) When I've seen high-level smooth competition where color isn't taboo for the man, I haven't liked the look. In particular in Standard, it seems to be all about showing off the lady - so why would I want to take away her thunder? By wearing black as leader, I can let the lady be the flower.
Hey, sometimes I like to be the flower.

agree with Joe. Black suit for men most classy and looks great with lady's dress of any color
I'm not sure the gentlemen would WANT to open the floodgates for various suit styles. These new froo froo gowns are are a complete joke. People point and laugh at the froo froo antiques in consignment shop windows... and then drop 5 grand for them at comp? Puh-leeze.
The men might end up wearing something like this...

At most events, men are free to use different colors and cuts. I think the prevalence of black tailsuits is simply a function of their effectiveness in presenting modern ballroom dance.
I've seen various world champions do shows in something other than the modern white tie with black tails. In my opinion, this doesn't work well; while one might think that matching the lady's color in a closed dance hold would result in a nice impressionistic view of the couple, in practice, it seems just to muddle the picture. There's really nothing better than black for showing off the clean lines of English style ballroom.
The one exception was a show in which Christopher Hawkins reverted to 18th century wear - complete with ruffled lace cuffs - for the viennese waltz. He looked great! Most of what he and Hazel did for that dance was apart work, though, not closed hold.
Tailless coats work even less well than nonblack ones, in my opinion. They show off even the smallest errors in hips, waist, and legs, in many cases resulting in a line that can only be described as ugly. In addition, they have no tails to show off the movement, which is the most important aspect of ballroom dance. At the opposite extreme, long coats that are not cut away provide insufficient freedom for movement.
All that said, I have to admit that one of the reasons I like black is that black is a good color for me. People with hair colors that aren't great with black might feel more of an urge to experiment. Of course, it might be easier for them just to dye their hair.

I remember one year Tony Dokman wore a Grey suit at Blackpool and the commentators were in an uproar.

I remember one year Tony Dokman wore a grey suit for teaching blackpool seminar (I think it was 2005), but Amanda were in matching navy blue dress...so in the same color family so looks neat...but that's for teaching seminar, and dance demo is kinda of show...in comp it's a hassle and costly for guys to find colored suit to match with ladies' dress.

I've seen a few very dark midnight blue tailsuits over the years, and I like them!

It is the nature of men's fashion to remain constant through the years. Outside the world of ballroom the key concept behind a man's suit has remained constant for over eighty years. Given the traditional nature of ballroom dance, it's quite understandable we'd hold on even longer. Besides, tail suits are awesome.
As for color, while I never want to see tail suits incorporate color, I'd not mind other men's formal wear incorporating the most overlooked - and necessary - men's accessory there is: the pocket square. While a colored cummerbund can be very tacky, and is often overdone when matched to a partner's dress, a pocket square adds just the right splash of color and ties the man to the flower that is the woman Go pocket squares!
I saw someone wearing a grey tailsuit in a video the other day, I was surprised thinking it was only meant to be black. admittedly it was a display dance, but would have cost an awful lot of money if you cant use it at another time.

I once made a bow tie and pocket square and dyed them bright green to match a partner's dress.

Same here, I like the traditional black and white look. On a side note, as a blond I will say that black suits work well for me (I actually can't think of any guys I know who can't pull off a black suit).

I would agree that black works with any hair color. I think it works best with hair colors that are either dark - to go with the black - or light - for contrast.
I think that for some colors in between - say, mousy brown colors - a medium to dark blue can work better. I would grant that you would then have to be careful with the dress color to make sure it is compatible.
Alternatively, the ladies could all just wear white dresses, freeing them from the need to follow fashion and leaving the gentlemen free to choose whatever color they wanted!
But then you have the issue of ladies who say they don't look good in white. :)

Which would be everyone who doesn't tan well. Not to mention all of us who've ever tried to get tanner stains off even COLORED fabric!

The first time I came out of the changing room with my full tailsuit and accessories on was the first and only time my partner told me that i looked beautiful & gorgeous. I will stay with the black thank you.:-)
