Hi,

I wanted to ask about the practicality of a white latin dress. It was brought up in the dress code thread:) I know there is potential for tanner to get on it, etc. which makes it seem impractical enugh, but is it ever possible to get tan enough to look great in white? Does it wash everyone out, or just some complexions. I have a fair complexion but with bronzer can get very dark. Also, the kind I would want would have long sleeves so mostly any body showing would be face and legs. It seems like it could be very pretty and stand out but I wonder if white itself disappears on the floor and if it washes you out too much too.

I don't believe it does at all. Not necessarily for being white anyway. Hopefully, you would be able to try this dress on and see what it looks like on you. Also, I would think that white has more potential for contrasting against your "bronzed" skin color. I have seen "white and sparkly" look great in Latin somewhere along the way. If you're thinking about having one 'custom made', by your own doubts I would be hesitant to pull that trigger. This is on another thread but we've had such great success buying off the rack (for Latin) that we will NEVER have a Latin dress custom made.

I think a white dress for Latin can look smashing.

Thank you both for the advice:) I won't have one custom made but know a friend that has a couple of them that I am considering one and it is very sparkly so I am so tempted!

Great to know that it is not a color to stay away from or anything!! I know if I get it I will be the most tan I have ever been when I wear it!

Long time ago there used to be a saying by some of the top coaches it said "winners always wear white". If most of your body is covered then I think it would be perfectly fine in regards to the tanning getting on it.

I myself always wore white dresses for the big competitions. I liked the clean bright look. The color would match any room and any lighting used in the room.

I think you will look great. :)

lemonade, I have worn white dresses in latin - and yes, they can be very hard to keep clean, not only from tanner, but from your make up and HIS! Luckily the make-up/bronzer usually comes off pretty easily with hand wash and a soft tooth brush.

I find that to have the white look good on the floor, 1) you must tan well (as mentioned), and 2) the majority of the surroundings in the ballroom must not be light colored.

If you are very fair, do NOT wear white. Unless you tan yourself silly.

What a great saying!! That is something I had not heard I love it!
I also had not ever thought of the surroundings being a factor but I can see how different rooms could have a different effect on costumes. I guess I just have to get as dark as I can be:)

You know we have had a lot of requests for white latin costumes lately. I think we have three or four in the store. (At least one bought from a DF'er.) I have had great results in washing them and getting most of the stains off. They look great in the store (we have great lighting that helps to show how it is going to look on the floor). Of course tanning is always preferred but we have had a few fair skinned ladies try them on and because of their coloring it still looked great. Remember those season categories we were told a few years ago? (Winter, Spring, Fall & Summer). I think, if I remember correctly, a fair skinned Winter looks good in white....

Julia Gorchacova (sp?) wore white for the rhythm championships at Ohio this year.

I once had a white standard dress and it is difficult to keep clean, white is a beautiful color but keeping clean is just a hassle because of the light color, a tiny lipstick stain can get noticeable which is the major drawback of white dresses:(
