Backpackers, hikers, campers, fisherman, hunters, skiers, others?

Just another post to see the diversity of fellow dancers.

I love to camp and hike, but my number one outdoor activity is the exploration of old ghost towns and other historic areas. The further off the beaten path the better. :D

I'm all for hiking, rock climbing, camping, horseback riding, and snowboarding.

Ooh, ooh...me, me... I enjoy hiking, biking, swimming (in the ocean), snorkeling, horseback riding, and camping (the 'roughing it' style ala brushing one's teeth in a stream).

I also like playing with small woodland creatures. As a teenager...my mother was constantly taking snakes, lizards, toads, turtles, and salamanders off my person and redistributing them to the wild. She apparently was not amused when my baby Garter Snakes escaped across the kitchen floor (she really didn't need to get on a chair...they don't bite--hard). :)

How about scorpions Temptress? I'm amazed to find that some of the ladies like TT and Larinda are so into "creepy" critters...I would never have guessed that such "girly girls" would be! :D

I do enjoy nature hikes and trips to the beach, but I haven't been taking enough of them. Camping - well I lived for a year and a half without electricity or running water as a kid...suffice to say I got my fill of "roughing it" for one lifetime!

Spending time in nature is a must...actually I just got back from a stroll in the nature garden...I'm feeling quite *******ed right now. ;)

I love to get out into nature and just sit on a beach or under a tree. I also love bushwalking, rock climbing and various other sports.

If you met me...you'd find I'm not a girly girl. I'm a bona fide tomboy. But no...not scorpions (they don't take a liking to Maryland for some reason)...but YES to catching crayfish and minnow and seven-year locust and nightcrawlers (I was probably one of the best nightcrawler catching creatures you'll ever meet).

My legs are a mess of scars of everything from figure skating toepick to the leg to running bare-legged through briar patches...to speed skating burns and my knees are kick-ball mangled.

Wow, definitely not a girly-girl! I do apologize if I was stereotyping. :?

You're certainly not a typical model TT...are you unique in this regards to other models you have met? Well, I never was much into nightcrawlers...but I used to go crabbing at the ocean and pull rock crabs out of their hidey-holes bare handed. Not the smartest thing to do honestly...and I did get pinched a few times.

Best,

You will find that most Aussies are great for "roughin' it" :P ....

I am comparatively "useless" (as termed by my fishing-fanatic ex, who resembles Aragon from Lord of the Rings), eventhough I did managed to spend a whole six weeks on a house boat (simple one like in "Cape Fear") with him & two big dogs, away from civilisation on a fishing expedition in the middle of winter (trout season).

Bushwalking, horse-riding, camping, sailing, hiking, snokelling/skuba diving (heck, even fishing) can all be fun, if you are in the mood AND in the right company.

I am learning to rollerblade right now, something I've always wanted to do 8) ! I would LOVE to learn to ride horses better, and also to surf (as an Aussie, it's a bit embarrasing if you don't know how to surf  )!

Rollerblading is one thing I plan to learn some time in the future. Love doing outdoor things, such as hiking...but am somewhat limited by feet problems. Don't want to risk my dancing...

Salsachinita....horseback riding in Australia? Kind of reminds me of one of my past favorite movies...the Man from Snowy River (more properly called the VERY sexy man from snow river). I so wanted to move there. :)

Of course, I was like 12 when that movie came out.

Oh and scorpionguy...most crayfish are also defensive (especially the big ones)...there's been times I've cornered a big one and contemplated if it was really smart to try and pick him up. Then there are the blue crabs I tried to pull barehanded out of a crab trap. I managed to get two but the third somehow managed to swing one of his mini-claws around and pinch/cut me.

Oh, and I am proud to say that I can operate a cast net (a 10-footer)...down to the dividing of the net for a proper throw and even holding the edge in my teeth. :) My boyfriend is a big-time saltwater fisherman...and living by the Gulf...I had to learn to make myself useful...so I learned how to cast and catch bait.

Oh, most definitely hiking. I prefer to go with my dog, but I can't take him into the Smokeys cuz the durn fool would certainly come running back with a big old black bear chasing him--or he'd probably be stupid enough to fight it (he's a terrier).

Parasailing is the bomb, but also love ocean kayaking. Never seem to find the time for all of it these days!

Spent most of my youth catching snakes, frogs, crayfish, whatever else slithered.

And when I was eight, was on the site of the discovery of a whole mastodon skeleton in Florida blackdirt region! My parents were sure that would make me a paleontologist. And if I thought there were any chance of cloning a T-Rex like in Jurassic Park, I'd do it still!

My ideal of the rugged-outdoors type would be an evening at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York . . . you know, the hotel that has those cute little things for soaking your sore dance feet in? The one that's right beside the regular toilet that looks kinda like a half-toliet and it sprays water upward???

Yea. That one . . .

One of my favorite profs in grad school, the guy who first taught me how to train dogs, was this short, fat, balding native New Yorker--very Brooklyn Jewish, never without a cigar (including when he was using the urinal). One of my all-around favorite people.

He was very proud to have a deck in the house he owned in the little Bloomington IN burb he lived in. He had a large fenced yard for his dogs, mostly briards, which was kept up by landscape guys he hired.

He'd sometimes have us over for barbecues, and talk about how he loved to sit out on the deck and look at his perfectly manicured lawn--but didn't want to spend time in the back yard, because it was "too close to nature."

Very Brooklyn--and one of the best guys I've ever known! 8)

Gr,
It sounds as though he WAS on of the good guys!!!

I used to be very into fishing and camping, and someday may get back into it. WE actually do love to fish, but dancing priorities have sidelined that for a while . . .

I actually bought the new truck with camping and fishing and pulling a ski boat in mind, but it (the truck) seems to only provide an excuse to go to Home Depot more often so I can get on with those "home projects."

Sometimes I get wild and read it while lying in my hammock, where I promptly fall asleep. Those outdoors adventures really tire me out. :)

I used to do a lot of camping, from Joshua Tree to Zion and even in the Greek Islands. I've done some low level mountain climbing and some mid-range white water canoeing (up to level three rapids) throughout the northeast. I've hiked around various parts of the U.S., Europe, Egypt, and Israel. I lived and worked on a communal farm in Israel for almost a year. I've been snorkelling at Blue Hole, just up the coast from Dahab in the Sinai Peninsula.

But, like Vince, I'd have to say that dancing leaves me very litlle time to continue such pursuits...

I am SO not a rugged outdoor type. Big source of conflict between me and a former SO. I wanted to take a luxury cruise. He wanted to go primitive camping when we got there. Oddly enough, that didn't work out. Hmm. Wonder why? :?

 Depends on where the luxury cruise goes! I did an acting gig on a cruise line for four glorious months! The work was kind of boring--a lot of really light theatre made lighter for the guests. But the life itself! We went from California to Mexico, Hawaii, Japan, China, back to Mexico and California and finally up to Alaska. Nothing quite like hiking Mount Juneau in the morning and returning in the afternoon for a full-body massage in the Spa!

Except the dancing scene was really kind of wretched. :(

Im not really "Rugged", I do enjoy camping though, but forget rock climbing, absailing or anything at all to do with heights! Even horses are high enough to make me nervous!
Im more of a Sporty kinda gal....I will play anything! Basketball ( 8yrs worth of competing) Footy -the Aussie rules! for about 3 years till I hit puberty and they kicked me off the all boy teams :( :( Cricket , Soccer, Swimming, Athletics (lots of medal and ribbons out of that actually....hmm wonder If I could alter them and put "Latin Champ" on them??  )

Ok I will forgive you just this once for calling it soccer!!
It has a similar shaped ball to American football...a little bigger and rounder, and there is np hand passing as such, most of the movement is done by long kicks, but they do handball which is pretty much punching the end of the ball!
If you are interested here is the league website www.afl.com.au

Um. Just for the record, it's football everywhere in the world (futbol in Spanish LOL). Only Americans call that other game football. And btw, Americans are arrogant enough to get away with it, at least stateside. LOL.

I'm not super rugged... I'm not into killing my own dinner and not being able to bathe for days on end. I love camping and I love nature... but if there's a clean bathroom nearby that is a definate plus in my book.

I guess I like to get away from it all but still take some of it with me ;)

I love camping, and the "great outdoors" in general. I have always been a tomboy, and I don't mind being dirty. I love to catch snakes, frogs, toads, whatever. My family used to take a long camping trip every summer, while my friends were going to Disneyworld. I'm so glad I was raised that way. It gave me a great appreciation for nature.

SCUBA, Flying, sky-diving, rock climbing, adventrue racing, mountain biking, hiking, kayacing, caving, hockey (GO WINGS!), soccer, frisbee golf, skiing, snowboarding, x-country skiing, orienteering...

Bascially, if I am outside, I am happy.

pygmalion
04-08-2004, 08:22 AM
What is orienteering?

Bob
04-08-2004, 08:42 AM
Orienteering is where you take a topo map and a compass (no gps!) and use that to go through the woods to find a flag with a punch. When you find the flag, you punch a score card and go on to the next "control".

In an adventure race, you get a map and "GO!". If you can't find the flag, you keep looking until you find it. navigation is often more important than athletic ability (especially in races that take 36 hours or more!)

In an orienteering event, you run through the woods for 3 hours or so, looking for 15 or 20 flags. You are competing for time.

They have several skill levels ranging from "white" (easiest) to "red" (most difficult).

My kids can do a white course with little difficulty and the red course challenges even the most effective navigators.
