I personally like a bun that sits low on the neck. I think it looks better. But when I do it, I find it not so comfortable. When I try dance frame (standard), the bun restricts my stretch or catches on my choker. Does anybody else have this problem?

I've only found hard with low bun when the bun got caught in my necklace sometimes. So for dresses comes with a necklace, I usually use french twist or a high bun to avoid my hair to be messed up by a necklace.

Well luckily you do standard and I am always AMAZED at how intricate, interesting, and gorgeous the ladies do their hair. It's like a french twist with strands of hair making a swirly pattern and then a clip... and that's only one side! I would imagine this takes a ton of practice but is definitely worth it in the end!
Good luck!

I was wondering - specifically for standard. How okay is it to have a half-down do? I've seen it done and I mean, thinking about the origins of the dances, it seems only appropriate...

what is a half-down do? a bun hanging not too high and not too low? I've seen this look before, don't like it, makes the lady too ballet look, not ballroom look, a friend of mine had a bun sort of ballet look and made her looked like a junior girl so not such refined look.

No, I meant like half of the hair is up and half is down in curls or braids or whatever.

I've seen it done, but only by the top ladies at this point.
Have you tried making your low bun just a bit higher or just a bit smaller so it doesn't catch?

Laura is right, only seen Loraine Barrichi done so at Superstar show, and Joane Bolton, Katusha Demidova has this hair style only for Blackpool seminars. Alessia Betti has done this for video demonstration. In comps, not even top ladies doing this, loose hair not as sharp as buns, imagine you stop in tango but your hair still flying around?

I've seen a couple of very good Pro ladies doing it when they dance with their male students in Pro/Am. Also a couple of Pros did it in the Pro Basics Standard competition at Manhattan.

I do it for Standard or Smooth pro-am very rarely. And only with Silver or Bronze students. Anything above that and it gets too distracting. And I would never do it at a major event.

When I do a low bun it always ends up messy at my neck. There is just too much movement and I have too much hair.

beautiful photos, Larinda! You look good with hair up or down:) Love that pretty white/pink shaded dress!
I agree!

I tend to wear my hair up as I get hot in my neck area, then I dont feel comfortable, but I have had my hair cut a bit shorter and enjoy not having to put it up as much. May get a bit more but off still.

I also cut my hair bit in summer, however my hairdresser said short hair (mine about shoulder length) not really easy to make low bun, French twist is easier for shorter hair. A lot of hair needed for shaping a nice low bun.

True. My hair is too long for French twist. When I tried it once, it was a mess.

I've also seen some girls love the look of low bun but not long enough hair to do so, so they combined a wig (wig of a bun) with their own hair, it came out nice though.

I've been using hair pieces for years to get a nice looking bun style. I have several, and have figured out different ways to incorporate them into hair styles.

If you want more body to bun, wrap hair around a curler before putting in hair net.

I don't use a curler or a hair net...but I will back comb it for more volume

You lucky ladies! I have to get a flat iron and a gallon or so of hair goop to try to tone down the volume in my hair. I have enough volume to own the whole dance floor.
Thankfully I just got mine layered. Only thing is it sucks for buns. So I always have to flat iron it. It;s convenient though because I can get the nice fat buns like Maria Manusova because my hair is so curly. I don't klnow how she gets it so darn smooth though.

Anyways, I wouldn't do half up half down in standard only because, in my opinion, it kind if ruins the look of your line. You may have beautiful line but if your hair is hanging off your shoulders in some odd direction it can distract the eyes. And I also agree that it may make your movements not look as sharp. However I have seen it done well in SOME latin dancers. Depending on how they do it and how good of a dancer they are.

I would do a low high bun. Not too low not too high but not smack dab in the middle (ballet look). If you look at the pic of Maria she has it low but its raised up from her neck. I'm sure one of the hair stylists at the comp could do that for you. Guess it also depends on how much hair you have. If you hair it too thin I'm not sure if they can do that. But hey, I hear Jessica Simpson sells some awesome extensions. That may work if that is the issue.

Chocolatchica, have you try straight perm your hair? It might work for you, I've done that before, and people helped me with hair always say my hair so easy so smooth to put into ponytail for low bun.

Judging from the picture, it seems that Maria is using a industrial-strength hair net, too. Not one of the thin smooth ones that look like a web of nylon filaments, but the thicker one that looks more like fishnet.
