View Full Version : Star Trek: Enterprise

Okay--I'm sitting here keeping one eye on the Forum while "Star Trek: Enterprise" is on tv. I don't normally watch the show, but I'm having a Geek moment right now. Earth is at war with these non-Earthlings, and the non-humans have this secret weapon. And what is that?
With all their special effects and their creative teams, the only secret weapon they can come up with is essentially...
...a mini-Death Star!
How lame is that?????
With Gene Rodenberry died all of the creative energy of that show--and the franchise is more or less empty!
Yuk!

I actually liked the original series best, corny as the costumes were. Only a good quality series could have spawned so many imitations, IMHO. And the second series (what was it called?) was also pretty good. Since then, the show just doesn't hold my interest. Sad. They should have let the show die with some dignity.

I agree...the original and TNG were good...DS9 was not bad...but it started to go downhill with Voyager...and the new show the few times I've watched it was pretty awful.
Anyone see the last movie? Ugh, it was almost painful to watch...almost worse than Insurrection. :?

Yes--and they had terrific writers from the actual field, too. It was so much more inventive than the stuff that came later. And the old crew in the films--much better. What was up with the last film? It was "Wrath of Khan" without an ounce of passion. Nobody cared!

Next Generation is the one you are thinking of.
I actually quite like Enterprise. But then I'm a sci fi freak who watches all these types of shows!

Did you watch Dr. Who? Just curious. I loved that show. :D

Well, yes. I watch it too. But I reserve the right to grumble! I do like Scott Bakula, have ever since "Quantum Leap." So my taste for sf runs the gamut from the great stuff to schlock!
Did you go for Bab5? I never really watched it, but all sorts of people told me I needed to.
Between all the sf shows and the Sopranos and Law and Order, I just can't keep up!

Oh, I used to love Dr. Who! I started watching it because it came on around the same time as Dark Shadows. I was a grad student, and not dancing, and I didn't have anything better to do!
Pretty pitiful, right?

Law and Order? That's it. We're officially kindred spirits. I like Scott Bakula too. And is Babylon 5 an Americanized version of a British Sci Fi show? I could have sworn I used to watch a show under that title on PBS years ago.

The original wasn't bad, TNG was by far the best, and voyager was definately way better than DS9. I haven't had any chance to watch much of Enterprise, but what I have seen hasn't seemed too bad. They seem to have done a good job of making everyone a little more 'human'. ... there's not much that can be worse than Insurrection, though Nemesis comes close.

Honestly, I stopped watching TV 5 years ago...save the little stint when my dad was staying with me last year. I honestly have no idea what people watch these days!
Babylon 5 - Never really got into that one. SeaQuest was a fav when I was first in college...we'd all get together to watch that one. First season was great...but I missed a lot of the later ones...actually I heard the actor that played the young kid named Lucas passed away recently...:(
Most of my favorite TV shows were cancelled...anyone ever watch the Sentinal? I loved that show...had a lot of metaphysical stuff in it...but only lasted one season as I recall. I used to get into the Highlander as well...but the last movie was HORRID! I was so let down by how awful that movie was...if I ever meet the director I'm going to give him a serious kick in the rear! :? 8) :o

Insectoids? Insectoids? I'm still watching the darn thing, and I'm going, is this the best writing they can come up with???
I don't know if B5 was originally British. But speaking of Brit shows that were destroyed by the Americans--have you ever seen "Cracker"? The original starred Robbie Coltrane--and he just rocked. Then they had an American version which was just awful.
But all-time favorite British television was Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. He was so incredibly good! When he died, I went into a week-long depression. And I kept playing "On the Street Where You Live" from the soundtrack to the film of "My Fair Lady" over and over again. Until I learned that they had dubbed in someone else's voice, just like they did ford Audrey Hepburn. Still, I can't believe he's gone!

Ah yes, I almost forgot about Babylon 5. The single best sci-fi show ever to grace television in my opinion!

I dunno--Star Trek 5 is pretty bad. "Let me share your pain!" "You don't believe I'm God? Okay--I'll smite you with blue lightning bolts shooting from my eyes. Now do you believe?"

Really? That's too bad. :(
I used to like Roy Scheider in it. But the second season got kind of like the second season on TNG--Wesley saves the ship. Again.

Oh my goodness. Yes and yes. (I'll google the B5 thing)
Cracker was totally destroyed by its Americanization. Totally. Robbie Coltrane created subtleties of character and eccentricites far beyond his American counterpart. I loved the British version of that show.
And Jeremy Brett WAS Sherlock Holmes. No point in looking for a replacement. I was totally shocked when he died. I always wondered what he died from. It seemed sudden, but then, one never knows. Sad, either way.

The first season of SQ was really good...it went downhill after that. I'm trying to think...one of the actors played in that western show...The Young Riders...man I loved that one.
Ah..yes...I'm also a huge huge fan of western books and movies...seriously I've read about 100 western novels...maybe more. I can't believe I admitted that in an open forum! No worries though. :D

I understand a heart attack, if I'm remembering right. At one of his last interviews, he was remembering his wife, another actress well-known on the British stage, not elsewhere. She had passed away years earlier, and he still was in mourning. He'd never remarried, and got emotional just talking about her. It was one of the most poignantly sad moments you've ever seen.
But on a happier note--David Suchet as Poirot. He's quite good. I met him when he visited Bloomington on one of those five RSC-actors-tour-the-states-and-show-everyone-how-much-better-trained-they-are things. And got drunk with him. And got lost trying to find the way back home!

How about western movies? More corny stuff, I know, but I love all the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. Clint is the man! 8)

Those are some of my favs...did you ever watch Unforgiven? Clint is getting pretty old these days...I remember an old episode of Mr. Ed when he was quite a young buck...he's like about 75 now I think???

Clint is definitely the man. I really thought "Unforgiven" was marvellous. I'm told that "The Missing" is basically a remake of "The Searchers"? Anyone seen it?
pygmalion
03-31-2004, 08:34 PM
Of course I saw Unforgiven. I couldn't believe it when they killed the side kick. NEVER would have happened in Clint's old westerns. Thirty two bad guy carcasses piled on a wagon, with thousands of shots fired, no gory scenes, and no dead good guys. Now that's my idea of a western.

Yeah--but you gotta love Gene Hackman. Perfect bad guy--and you're just waiting the whole time for him to get it!

Yeah, that was one part I didn't like too much...and I was curious if the amount of swearing fit the era in the movie. Most western novels have no foul language at all...but perhaps he was trying to make a point of this?
The Good, the Bad and Ugly...now there's a classic! ;)

I suspect the reality was somewhere in between. Gene Hackman is the consummate bad guy. And good guy. And humorous guy. I guess ijust like him as an actor.

 I did my dissertation on satire during the English Restoration period. And the earliest use of one common vulgarity in that film I've found was the mid-17th century or so. There it was used, as far as I can find, exclusively as a verb. But I've not made an actual study of it!

well, it IS only 22nd century technology. besides, the only reason to watch is jolene blalock. so you tape (or TIVO) the show & fast forward to those parts!

Good suggestion--but it's much older than 22nd century technology. It was developed a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. But then I suspect all those Jedi of old have long since entered the Q continuum.

:) I was so happy when I first heard about this show. I still find it watchable but I have been a little dissappointed. It's one of those shows I catch every now and then. The UPN station here is always moving Enterprise. It's never on the same time two weeks in a row. The other show I enjoy but only watch it now and then is Stargate SG-1 :)
