Scary and exciting news guys: tonight at my ballroom class I signed myself up for my first ever dance competition! So my "social" dancing is soon to become "competitive" dancing - gulp! I've been dancing for nearly 2 years now and I've done medal tests (I'm up to Bronze Bar this year) but they don't count since you're only competing against yourself in those. :)

The comp is being held in Wellington on May 1st, so wish me luck! I'll be doing a Waltz, Jive and Evening Three Step - which, for you non-antipodeans out there, is a New Vogue dance. :? New Vogue is a style of sequence dancing pioneered in Australia in the 1930s and is hugely popular here Down Under. But you guys are all dancers so you probably knew that already right?

This competiton will be fairly small-scale I think, and I'm just doing it for the experience really - "for fun", I guess you could say, if it wasn't so damn terrifying! I'm sure many DF folks have done competitions before - do you have any advice or suggestions for me? :?:

Yay, dancingdragon! :D Check out the first competition threads that are posted at the top of the ballroom forum. Hope that helps. 8) And let us know how it goes, okay? :D

My first comp was three weeks into dancing.
No idea about timing, all I could do was panic about remembering the steps. Hundreds of people were watching and they were all calling out the timing. Most of the round (beginners) were off-time and it didn't matter a damn. Everyone had a blast.
Go for it. Have a ball. The next one will be easier.

Congratulations Dancing Dragon. I had my first couple a couple of months ago and I felt very similar to you. The fear dissolved away as the music started for me and I am sure it will for you also. I loved the entire experience and will be doing my next one in May. I will certainly be going to every one I can afford and I certainly hope you have a similar experience.
