I know that there are a lot of pro/am scholarships out there. I was wondering whether there were any for am/am and if so, what they were, how they worked and what comps did you have to participate in to get them?

Yes, there are. Typically at the Champ level, but at times even in syllabus. MAC had some, NJ Dancesport events do as well. Probably need to check each comps website for more details...go to www.usabda.org (http://www.usabda.org) for a list of amateur comps.

But just in case you're not used to them -- the Scholarships at just about all these events are small. At most amateur events that I've seen that offer them, $500 for first place is considered large. I've seen many that only offer $100 for first place, especially for competitions that offer scholarships in the syllabus levels.

(I've known people who thought Scholarships could fund a person's dancing for months.... Its more often in the 1-3 lesson range. They are wonderful, just don't think they are bigger than they are....)

Thanks, but I did realize that. I've seen the pro/am scholarships and those aren't that large either.

At the MAC, I won a few syllabus level scholarships...1st place was $25, 2nd place was $15....was nice and unexpected, but just about covered a group class for partner and I.

In my experience, pro-am scholarship much bigger, in 2005 Manhattan Dancesport I won pro-am scholarship A division and I've got $600 check, that's 3 years ago, now maybe even bigger $$$. For am/am much smaller, usually 1st or 2nd place in champ maximum $300 or $200, for example Harvard gave $300 for 1st place and $200 for 2nd place in champ which were considered very generous compared to other am comps. NJ Classic also gives couple hundred for champ top placements and they are known to be generous in scholarship, Clover Star gave $100 for 1st place champ am, this year Millennium unusually generous and gave 1st place am $1000 (but that's really unusual), a lot of NDCA events don't have scholarship for am.

The theory is it takes much bigger wallet to compete pro-am, thus bigger scholarship for pro-am; cost much less for am/am to compete, thus smaller checks which make sense.

that's actually very nice for syllabus dancers:) they didn't even give any scholarship money for 4th to 6th place champ couples this year. Only 1st to 3rd got money, haha...now I know where the $$$ went...lol...just joking, congrats to your winning:)

At NJ Dancesport Classic we received a $15 prize for finishing 3rd overall in our syllabus level. We ended up donating the prize back to the organizers so they could use it for another scholarship for the junior divisions.

The 2008 USA Dance National Championships had a VERY generous scholarship purse, offering prizes at all levels / age categories / styles. The list of scholarships offered this year can be found on the competition website. USA Dance National Championships.

It was a wonderful show of support for amateur dancing in the country as the donations came from local chapters, current and past champions, and lovers of dance.
