You Can Do It!
I was getting ready to go out dancing, when I felt a compulsion to share a philosophy that has helped many of my friends to succeed, without spending money without sacrificing pleasure, without fear of failure, and traveling on a great adventure where there is only a win, win situation.
The formula takes two hours a day for two years (2X2), and is excitingly painless.
On May 8, 1999, at the age of 76, I decided to fulfill a lifetime ambition. I went out and bought a song book, "the DEFINITIVE JAZZ COLLECTION" . And in the inside cove I wrote, "This is the beginning of my fulfillment of pursuing a career as a pop singer". For the next year I spent two hours a day learning the words and singing my favorite songs of the 1930' to 1960. Exactly a year later on May 8th 2000, 18 days after I turned 77 (my lucky number) I was bounced off the hood of a car by a driver who never saw me until I was laying across the hood of his car with my eye balls looking into his through the windshield when he finally hit his brakes. 22 days later I was released from the hospital with permanent damage to the nerve tissue on my upper spin which controlled my balance. But I did not forget my goal of becoming a pop singer, and as soon as I was released I continued my two hour a day routine of singing pop songs, which I thoroughly enjoyed doing. Before I end my 2X2 success story, allow me to cite a few other '2X2 success stories:
At 27, I could not even walk in time to the beat of the bass drum in a parade. I almost got an Honorable Discharge from the AAF during WW II, because I could not keep in step with 10,000,000 other soldiers. I started my Dance Teachers Training Classes in March 1949; training under Rae and Lance Stevens at Bill Williams Dance studio on LaBrea two blocks south of Wilshire for eight weeks, and a few months later trained at Veloz & Yolanda studying under Ted Zane and Mary Tweedy for another eight weeks; two years later I won the Rudolf Valentino Tango Trophy at the Hollywood Palladium. Among the losers were Rae & Lance Stevens and Ted Zane & Mary Tweedy. I beat my own teachers in less than two years of dancing every day.
Jose' Antonio, at the age of 16, walked into my Hollywood Dance Studio one day to study modern jazz dancing; two years later I drove him to Las Vegas for his first audition which he qualified for and started dancing in the Las Vegas extravaganzas. Years later had his own dance show at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas.
Kelly Edwards started playing tennis at 16 years old in 1985; in less than two years she was on the East Coast tennis tour playing against girls with ten years more experience. Today, thanks to her scholarship in tennis, Kelly Edwards is the Head Director of Athletics and Academics of Ribet Academy in Los Angeles.
Before you go out buying a tennis racquet, let me give you the important pre-requisites of this 2X2 success formula:
1) CHOOSE A FIELD THAT YOU LOVE SO MUCH, THAT YOU WOULD GLADLY DO IT FOR FREE.
2) CHOOSE A FIELD THAT YOU CAN PRACTICE EVERYDAY FOR TWO HOURS WITHOUT A LARGE MONEY OUTLAY.
3) CHOOSE A FIELD WHERE THERE ARE SUFFICIENT SUBJECTS TO PRACTICE WITH OR ON.
4) BE PRACTICAL IN YOUR SELECTING. IF YOU ARE SHORT LIKE ME, 5'5", BASKETBALL IS OUT.
I ALWAYS WANTED TO BECOME A BRAIN SURGEON, BUT I COULD NEVER FIND VOLUNTEERS TO PRACTICE ON.
HOWEVER, DO NOT LIMIT YOURSELF BECAUSE YOU ARE TOLD YOU NEED A COLLEGE DEGREE. MICHELANGELO NEVER WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL, EINSTEIN FAILED MATH IN SCHOOL. FRED ASTAIRE WAS THROWN OUT OF DANCE SCHOOL, AND GLENN MILLER FAILED MUSIC IN COLLEGE. DO YOU BEGIN TO GET THE PICTURE? AND DO NOT EXPECT ANY SUPPORT FROM YOUR FAMILY OR FRIENDS, 90 TIMES OUT OF 100 THEY WILL DISCOURAGE YOU.
EVEN JESUS CHRIST CONCURS WITH ME; LUKE QUOTES JESUS AS SAYING, ' YOUR HOMEBOYS ARE THE LAST TO APPRECIATE YOU' . AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND, I DO NOT MEAN THAT IN A DISREPECTFUL WAY!

NOW HERE IS THE BIG, PRIMARY SECRET! "DO IT EVERY DAY FOR TWO YEARS":
IF YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT, BUY A COUPLE OF GOOD BOOKS AND DRAW BUILDINGS EVERY DAY; IF YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ACTOR, BUY A COUPLE OF BOOKS ON PLAYS AND READ ALOUD EVERYDAY; IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A GOLFER, BUY A COUPLE OF USED CLUBS AND HIT THE BALL EVERY DAY, BUT DO NOT BUY ANY BOOKS ON GOLF BECAUSE THEY WILL DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD BY CAUSING YOU TO TENSE.
THE SECRET IS TO TURN YOURSELF LOOSE, RELAX AND DO NOT GET ALL TIED UP WITH RULES AND TECHNIQUES. MOST OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IN TECHNIQUES WILL COME TO YOU NATURALLY THROUGH YOUR DAILY REHEARSING. IF YOU ARE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND THAT RARE ANIMAL A 'SOCRATES, BUT TEACHING IS A GIFT AWARDED TO THE VERY FEW. YOU CAN DO A BETTER JOB OF TEACHING YOURSELF THAN MOST LOOSE CANNON CHARLATANS CAN WITH DEGREES.
ONE LAST EXAMPLE OF A 2X2 SUCCESS STORY:
ONE DAY I WAS SHOWN AN 8X10 DRAWING MADE BY A 27 YEAR OLD SINGLE MOM WITH TWO CHILDREN. I ASKED HER WHERE DID SHE GET THE IDEA FOR HER PORTRAIT, THINKING SHE DREW THIS 8X10 CHARACTER FROM HER IMAGINATION. SHE SHOWED ME A PHOTOGRAPHIC DUPLICATE IN A MAGAZINE AT HER ELBOW POINTING TO A STAMP SIZE PHOTO. IT WAS THE FIRST DRAWING SHE HAD EVER MADE. IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS, APRILE BOETTCHER BECAME THE FIRST FEMALE SUPERVISOR IN THE WALT DISNEY ART DEPARTMENT. APRILE IS MY DAUGHTER!
AND NOW WE COME TO MY PERSONAL 2X2 SUCCESS STORY: IN NOVEMBER 2002, TWO PLUS YEARS AFTER I WROTE MY COMMITMENT IN MY SONG BOOK TO BECOME A POP SINGER, I WROTE MY FIRST ORIGINAL SONG, AND TO DATE, MAY 15, 2003, I FINISHED MY FIRST MUSICAL ABOUT SWING DANCING IN HOLLYWOOD IN THE 1950'S WITH 15 ORIGINAL SONGS; WORDS & MUSIC BY JOE LANZA.
2X2 WILL GET YOU THERE, THAT'S A PROMISE I MAKE TO YOU.

What's really sad is the part about family and friends discouraging you. Do you have any clue how many times a week I hear "You can't make a career out of dancing". Bull-oney! :P

Yes, Joe is a great example of someone who made a career in dancing. You should check out his web page. He's danced in lots of movies alongside some very famous people.

Hey,
Yeah - it sucks..I LOVE dancing, and I would do anything to do it for a living...but my parents say 'its just a hobby'... all my friends tell me I can make it and stuff, but my family - no way! My mom says I have to be getting A's in all my subjects before I can even talk about dance pretty much...

But from reading that - I know it's what I want to do :)

There'a a really good thread that follows someone's experiences similar to yours, KimmyZ. It was something to do with dance teacher training. I can't remember the exact title, though. Let me go see if I can find it for you. :)

Here is it. Take a look. I think this might help a little. At least you'll know you're not alone. :)

2) CHOOSE A FIELD THAT YOU CAN PRACTICE EVERYDAY FOR TWO HOURS WITHOUT A LARGE MONEY OUTLAY.

So dancing is inevitably out of the question? Because even if you practice the heck out of it, if you don't get at least a couple of hours of lessons a week to balance the 16 hours of practice, you're not getting a thing out of it.
