The other day I was out shopping at Trader Joes...and suddenly I became aware that I could hear the sound of a conga drum, ever so faintly as I was strolling around the store. As much as I listen to Salsa (all day, everyday!)...I'm not surprised to think that it may just be in my head.
But soon I realize - they are playing Salsa! I start doing a few toe taps and shines moves as I'm walking...nothing overly-conspicuous so I don't draw any unwanted attention. The song ends and I feel kind of sad...and then, another one starts.
Its actually good music...so then I see this lady in the aisle near me, and have to restrain myself from asking her to dance. She clearly wasn't hearing the music, but you can bet if I had seen any woman grooving like I was I wouldn't been dancing with her in a heartbeat! :D
Anyone ever have an experience like this? Gosh us dancers can be weird at times. :P

I've been out to the local Ben and Jerry's with people and just had to get up and dance. Partially because it embarasses my daughter, but mostly because it's fun!

I have danced quite a bit when waiting in lines to get cashed out. I've entertained people and have been asked if I am practicing for a performance of some sorts... I guess it must be a performance as otherwise it's just weird?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Late in December, when I had to take a break from dancing during Xmas holidays, I was at a Costplus store and they had such a good salsa/rumba music playing - I wasn't even trying to restrain myself - I danced for two songs
Fortunately, nobody called security, people were just smiling....

Sure. I hear salsa music in all different places......and yes, I have the urge to dance, no matter where! (thus I started my "Where is the strangest place you've ever danced at?" under "Funstuff & Inspirations" )
The trouble was, there were never any salseros around when this happened  ........
So most of the time I'm just groovin' by myself 8) ..........

Were you there? How did you know what she said? 8^)
Actually, it was even better than that. When we got there she had everyone sit so that the dancers were on the inside of the booth and couldn't get out. She thought that was sneaky, but forgot about it when they all went to the bathroom. When they came back the dancers got to sit on the outside, and so we were able to dance anyway.
After all, it is a major part of a parents job to embarass their kids in public. I'm pretty sure it's even in the handbook!

I heard a paso doble while at work, but I was a bit busy to just break out dancing.
However, at a recent employee appreciation picnic, they had a local Latin band who played some cha-chas and salsas. I and my friend did some dancing, which seemed to go pretty well.
Another open-air Octoberfest-type fair on campus had a polka band. Unfortunately no one I was with was into polka. :(

All the time! IHoP parking lot while waiting for a table to come open (my friend just blasted salsa on his car system while we danced out their with our friends) and at Magic Mountain (we had damn near 6 couples dancing as people walked by! )
I sometimes get one of the girls in the office to do a move w me for fun.
"Briefly though" the boss might not like it. :)

The office lobby is my best known area to break out into a salsa step. Especially, when I've fixed a computer that's gotten on my last nerve. LOL :D

 I generally try to be discrete  I have been to a couple of restaurants where an obliging friend and I danced in the aisles, whilst everyone else starred into their food as if they were reading tea leaves

Everyone should dance in public when they feel like it, as long as you keep your clothes on! It is a spontaneous expression of your present mindset and can be entertaining to onlookers! I can liken it to being in a really great mood and going up to the guy next to me and saying "Hey, that's a great tie!" I dance at some of the colleges where I teach, in the halls, etc, when I feel like it. When in Seoul last month, they always had hip-hop music blasting from the stores so, as the mood moved us, my friend I took the opportunity to do a few steps in the Myong Dong shopping district. People wondered what the heck got into us, but we were enjoying it!

Of course we dance in public whenever the mood strikes. Fran and I used to go to New Orleans frequently and always danced to the street musicians in the late evening especially by the river with a little wine!! :D

Last night, at a cafe/bar listening to a mate's band play blusey sort of stuff. They start in on something which was almost, but not quite a cha-cha (very Santana-ish feel to it). So I boogied away at the bar at the back while waiting for my hot chocolate to arrive, and wished I was there with my dance friends instead of the physics-geek crowd.
Cheers

How amusing to find this thread now! I was at the supermarket with my sister just a few hours ago and what should be blaring over the speakers but Emotion -Destinys Child...so feeling the music completely I broke out into a very long walk my sister started to and we walked the entire length of the supermarket swaying our hips
We got a few bemused stares.
Then a little later on we practiced some Parma Waltz in the front yard of our parents place
I do that often actually...the local supermarkets floor is great to slide your toes across for a Rumba walk.
I have done little dances in a haberdashery store, KFC ( ), in the front yard, down the back of a movie theater 8)
I love to dance, I dont care where I do it!

Hey there, wingnut! I hadn't noticed your post until now--nice to hear from you!
New Orleans streets--would seem difficult not to dance there!

I was in Boston shopping at Fanuel Hall during the holiday season. There were two guys playing classical guitar and a set of small hand drums. They were playing wonderful music! People were standing and listening, and buying their CDs. If I had a dancer with me, then we would have been dancing a rumba, no doubt about it! I am sure the musicians would have appreciated it, and the crowd would have been doublely entertained. It would have been so cool!

I can recall practicing a waltz down the aisle of the local Woolworths. At work, if I have to ask my boss a question but she's busy with someone else, I pass the time by doing a bit of jive or samba on the spot, or a bit of Tracie Leigh waltz. My workmates seem to be used to it by now.
Y'all are crazy! I like it. :P

You could catch me anywhere dancing! I live in Kuwait where it is like against the religon for the girls to dance infront of a man, but that doesn't matter to me. I dance up and down the aisles in all the stores, all i do is get a beat going in my head then i can't stop.

Hello DaniGurl :D .. couldnt help but comment on that.. just my opinion.. as i lived in kuwait myself for a number of years.. altho t'was a long time ago.. but its not aginst religion per say.. in my view its against 'their interpretation of religion'.. big difference.. this is evidence in the fact that there are many other Muslim countries that has no problem with this.. its the people that choose to make it so.. but thats a whole other subject. Sorry for cutting in.

Oh yes!! If I hear 'All that Jazz' or any other Jazz song similar to that one, i can't help but tap my feet... do a few shuffles, side steps.. and if the music is fast enough, I have done the Shim Sham Shimmy. :D
I love dancing in front of people. I can't wait until my show in July.
