The official cast announcement will be held on the morning of August 25 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_25), 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008) on Good Morning America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Morning_America). This is the third season to have its cast announced on the talk show.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_with_the_Stars_%28U.S._season_7%29#cite_no te-0)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_with_the_Stars_%28U.S._season_7%29#cite_no te-1)
Both Warren Sapp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Sapp) and Cybill Shepherd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybill_Shepherd) have been offered slots as contestants and have expressed interest in accepting them.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_with_the_Stars_%28U.S._season_7%29#cite_no te-2) [4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_with_the_Stars_%28U.S._season_7%29#cite_no te-3)
Emmy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmy_Award)-winner Kathy Griffin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathy_Griffin) and former U.S. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) Vice President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vice_President) Dan Quayle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Quayle) have both turned down offers to appear on the show this season. [5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_with_the_Stars_%28U.S._season_7%29#cite_no te-4)
Kim Kardashian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Kardashian) and Florence Henderson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Henderson) have also wanted to do the show.
Full House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_House) actress Candace Cameron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candace_Cameron), George Lopez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Lopez_%28TV_series%29) actress Constance Marie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constance_Marie), and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabrina%2C_the_Teenage_Witch) star Melissa Joan Hart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melissa_Joan_Hart) are rumored to be three of the six females competing on this season. Hart has expressed interest in the show since the show's fourth season.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_with_the_Stars_%28U.S._season_7%29#cite_no te-5)

Interesting.
I have heard rumor of former VP Quayle being a contestant on MSNBC's Countdown show and thought, "That can't be real?" So he was offered a spot.
So Cybill is looking to be the token senior citizen on the ladies side.

Okay, as a moderator I find myself in a strange predicament. DF guidelines discourage rumors, gossip or speculation on the forum. However, some of the fun of DWTS seems to be expressing who might be up for the next season. Most of the unconfirmed speculation we try not to get involved in is harmful to the speculatee, that may not be the case here.
I will leave this thread up for now, but will check with the powers that be if it can stand on DF.

So anybody know if there are anyone with dance backgrounds in the "rumorees"? (Is that a word? Just made it up ;)).
I think Florence Henderson has some Broadway work on her resume. Not sure.

I followed those wiki links on the rumored "stars".
Wow, Florence Henderson would set a record for oldest contestant if she was on! She does have several different Broadway shows in the 1950's and 60's to her credit for a dance background. I remember seeing her on old variety shows like The Dean Martin Show and The Carol Burnett Show on TV doing song and dance.
Constance Marie has been a dancer for years, and appeared in the movie Salsa as a dancer. If she's in, she might be a strong candidate to make it to the finale.

Did anyone else hear/read that the main singer from the P-cat Dolls will be dancing this season? I thought I read it somewhere but I could be wrong.

Hmm, well every season needs a ringer so if it's true then she would be the one for this season.

Exciting! Im looking forward to it.
The following is in today's (August 7) entertainment section of MSNBC.com:
Though the official announcement isn’t due until Aug. 25, In Touch Weekly claims to have the scoop on the seventh-season lineup of “Dancing With the Stars.” “Toni Braxton, Kim Kardashian, Jewel’s boyfriend Ty Murray, Dan Marino, Lance Bass and Florence Henderson will all be competing,” an insider revealed to the magazine. “The cast is eclectic and diverse: We’ve got young, old, gay, straight, dance professionals and people who’ve never danced before.”

Could Corky Balls be on the show?
And speculation has been stirring for quite some time about whether Kim Kardashian will bring her booty into the ballroom — but it looks as though it’s going to be a double whammy this season. A Kardashian camp insider said that Kim will be battling against her mom, Kris Jenner.
The reality stars will reportedly be partnered with father/son pro dancers Mark and Corky Ballas. Awww.

Ty Murray? Now THAT I would have to see. Bull riders as a whole tend to be very uncomfortable doing things that are not considered "manly". I would love to see him attempt ballroom dancing and to see if they would be able to get him into sparkly garments. Besides that, he's pretty cute. lol!
I wouldnt mind seeing Lance Bass on the show, provided that he dances with a girl. Gay or not, he should have to follow the same rules as everyone else.
And I hope both Kim and her mother dont go on the show together. The girls in that family can get pretty whiny when they are together (yes, I confess to watching parts of their show every once in a while....I say parts because they whine and bit** and argue too much for me to be able to get thru a whole show).

Ty Murray? Of the PBR? For real?!? Oooh, if he's on I know who I'm power-voting for this year! Too bad it's not Adriano Moraes, or one of the other South Americans--I bet they wouldn't have ANY issues with dancing being manly or not! They can get Adriano next year, he's retiring after Worlds anyway. And I wish I could get youtube here at work...I googled Ty and my favorite bull, Little Yellow Jacket, and I think he actally RODE LYJ (ie stayed on 8 seconds.)
....
I've just outed myself as a total freak, haven't I. Okay, okay, so I love watching professional bull riding. I even have a little Breyer model of Little Yellow Jacket (anyone who thinks animals can't have stage presence never met that bull--I swear, I saw him one time throw the guy at 2 seconds, stop dead, look around like "Yeah, I own this place", and trot out the gate with the bucking rope still on.)
If my pros see this thread I am never hearing the end of it....

Oh, I really don't care. Believe me, there's very little about myself I'm actually ashamed/too embarrassed to have people know about. But PBR and ballroom...?
Has anyone heard any more about Corky being on the show? TWOP's boards are talking a lot about it, including some hints from Corky's site that it might happen. And would that mean he's bumping someone? Because if I'm doing the math right, Maks would be 'replacing' Louis, who was only back by request. Would Corky then be taking Jonathan's spot if he's really going to be taking the season off to compete?
It could happen. We'll just have to wait for the official announcement.

obviously danceronice was just being funny/kidding around. gotta admit its an odd combo(ballroom dancing and bull riding)! :cowboy:
If Ty were on the show I would sooo vote for him...he seems like a cool guy. However, if he refused to take off his cowboy boots and put on dancing shoes, well, thats the end of that. I hate it when ppl go on the show and act like they didnt know that they were going to have to (gasp!) actually wear the clothes!!!
I've heard about Corky being on there too, to dance with Kim Kardashian's mother Kris. Apparently the network's been dying to do a mother/daughter showdown for a while. I would assume that they think it would be even better for ratings to have both a mother/daughter and father/son thing going on at the same time. And I can guess I can see where it would.
SHould be interesting...

08-11-2008, 03:28 PM
I can't quite see Ty pulling the "ZOMG YOU MEAN I HAVE TO DANCE" thing. (And yes, obviously, I was being facetious. I know when I post there's fairly good odds at least one of my pros will read it. It *is* an oddball combination, PBR and ballroom, and I have to admit, even when you throw in sci-fi/fantasy, Star Wars, etc., of all my obsessions, the hardest one to explain is probably watching the PBR.)
I'm not even sure I want the Kardashians on the show--I mean, really, what is Kim famous for? A reality show, a sex tape, and her father having been on OJ Simpson's Dream Team of defense attorneys. I really, really, don't want this show to jump the shark by becoming a gimmick thing only, or really being "Dancing With the D-List." Though that's tempered by curiosity about seeing Corky on there.

As Joel McHale would say, Kim Kardashian is "famous for having a big a$$ and a sex tape.":p And the show is already Dancing with the D-List. I think that's why I've come to love SYTYCD, I'm actually happy for the kids on there. Where DWTS, I really could care less who gets another week of increasing their 15 minutes of fame.
danceronice
08-11-2008, 04:33 PM
My problem with SYTYCD has been that, Pasha and Anya aside, the ballroom has been lukewarm at best (I saw the one ballroom--waltz?--in the final this season and spent it thinking his posture was lousy) and I can't stand contemporary and can take or leave hip-hop. So basically I don't enjoy a majority of the routines on the show. DWTS on the other hand at least gives me real pros to watch no matter how bad the celebs may turn out to be. At least 1/2 of each couple is someone I'd want to watch, while the average SYTYCD contestant is someone i might go see if I weren't busy and the ticket was free and maybe they had "Prodigal Son" on the program or something.

Wooh: Yeah, but you gotta admit that although it's torture watching them dance like crap and then arguing about how good they are, one can get some sort of perverse pleasure out of famous people who think they are so great (and ballroom is so easy) doing absolutely horrible at our type of dancing. Hmm....or that could just be me and is probably because seeing how bad they are makes me feel better about how bad I am compared to the pros.
danceronice: the pros are exactly why I love DWTS. Well, that and the pro guests that come in and dance on the results show.

Sort of like Ballroom Boot Camp, only fancier! My friend actually had this idea (okay, she originally had it as a story idea) for Strictly Come Dancing---I think it would be awesome if they at least had one male and one female competitor who were Joe and Jane Average. Too bad almost all of us around here would be ineligible.
Heard Corky is on the show, too.

The only problem is it would quickly be dumped to a minor network because only those of us who already love ballrooom dancing would watch it. I know the DF population is large but not as big as the DWTS watchers. I would probably watch your last coaching session if it was on PBS but you, me and DF wont get you to prime time.
Oh yeah- i love bull riding too. Love Ty Murray. hope this rumor is true. it may be since he did the bullriding version of DWTS with his celebrity bull riding show.

Last time I heard anything about Inna and her partner, they were competing. But the money from DWTS would be better, I'm sure. The rumor came from someone whom TWOP has found to be accurate in the past regarding DWTS casting.
Someone else there had heard Elena would be back, as well. I wish they'd just announce it so we can stop speculating (about the cast, at least.) I'd like to know why they decided to go to 13 couples--just to get Corky in, or do they plan to keep adding? I think SCD has gotten increasingly bigger.

Amen to the Lacey comment...I really like Lacey, but having her on DWTS just seems...not quite right. Maybe I'm a purist; for some reason I just don't think the casts of SYTYCD and DWTS should overlap. Again, no good reason...it just doesn't feel right  Besides, I kinda consider Lacey to be more of a swing dancer than a ballroom dancer...yes, I know, she was a youth Latin champion, but as of late it seems like she has shifted more towards her swing career...not sure it would be fair to her partner to have a coach that had more of an inclination towards swing rather than ballroom...
...as for the Mark McGrath rumor, I hadn't heard his name come up as a possible cast member be4, but it makes sense. Apparently he and Dayna Devon are out of work after Mario Lopez finishes A Chorus Line on Broadway, as he will be the sole host of the show...so Mr. "Sugar Ray" himself would have some time on his hands. Hmmmm...
Now I am typically very supportive of any celebrity that has the guts to hit the dance floor on DWTS, but a really snarky part of me either A) Doesn't want Kim Kardashian on the show at all, or B) wants her to embarass the heck out of herself if she is on the show, and get eliminated the first week. Something about a woman who has built her celebrity on a sex tape just makes me angry

The judges will score the performances on Monday while the viewers cast their votes for their favorites. Only twelve will have the chance to showcase their second dance on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 (9:00-10:0 p.m., ET). Is it a name pattern? Names start with the same letter? Corky & Cloris?
Kinda excited to see Corky on the show...the Hough-Ballas triumvirate just turned into a power square 8)
Not so excited about...Mark's partner. I ABSOLUTELY CAN'T STAND THAT WOMAN  I've watched her reality show, and she just comes off as the most ungrateful, entitled, jaded person. And Mark seems so genuine (and hot...but that's another thread...;))! God may smite me for aligning against my beloved Mark, but I hope she gets voted out in week one...I would rather sacrifice seeing Mark than see her try and stretch her NON-STARDOM a minute more
Surprisingly, I think I'm most excited for the Derek - Brooke partnership. She is so athletic, and in FANTASTIC shape for having 3+ kids. Also excited about Susan and Tony...I could see this being a really strong partnership.

Was wondering the same, but they are called "professionals" on the DWTS. And thought part of being a professional in NDCA was simply identifying yourself as that. Am sure Inna looked into it carefully either way.

Good point...and it just occured to me that she is likely getting paid to do this, and I believe that would violate some of the rules for competing amateurs. I don't think you are allowed to draw a profit from your dancing if you're competing as an "amateur", unless the money somehow goes right back into your dancing (like lessons, costuming, etc.)
I remember there was a big ado about this back when I was in college, and our team made ourselves available to teach lessons and do exhibition performances on campus...we were given the okay to compete as amateurs, but only if the money we made from said lessons and competitions went towards our organization and "furthering the art of Dancesport".

The only issue I have with Lacey being a pro on the show is that I'm afraid she has shifted her focus more to the swing dance side of her career, as opposed to the ballroom/latin...and that might put Lance at a bit of a disadvantage, since every other pro on the show is ballroom or Latin-centered. Who knows, though, she could be doing Latin everyday and all we hear about is her swing dancing...guess time will tell :???:

Not the majority - ALL restrictions have been lifted, so that the USA Dance competitor is the same as every dancer worldwide:
2.1.4. A "Professional" is an individual who has declared him or herself as a professional, or who has competed as a professional at a competition. Professionals are ineligible to compete in USA Dance events.
4.3.1. DANCING AS A PROFESSIONAL
An Athlete is ineligible to compete as an Athlete if found by the DanceSport Council to have violated this provision.
4.3.1.1. The following acts are considered evidence that an individual has become a Professional:
a) By publicly declaring himself or herself to be a Professional, whether verbally or in writing.
b) By competing as a Professional.

You are right ... thats why sometimes I think it is a shame that DWTS was started a few short years ago. I mean Ballroom dancing has been such an integral part of societies for years eh? Then it sorta just dwindled and was more ... I do not know the word to describe what I mean but ... think you get the idea. Just glad DWTS is around and other dance shows regardless of how good or bad. It has breathed new life into it and so many more people are becoming intrested and realizing how wonderful it is.

I am about sick of hearing "ooh Lance should have a male partner because he's gay!" or "why isn't Lance dancing with a man???" I guess its just from the fact that people outside the ballroom world don't understand that that kinda thing just doesn't happen...no matter what your sexual orientation, you dance with a member of the opposite sex (unless you compete in the collegiate level, and well, then...anything goes sometimes! :raisebro:) I know plenty of homosexual ballroom competitors, and most of them would laugh at the very notion of dancing with a same-sex partner. It's not a matter of intolerance or homophobia...it's just how it is in the ballroom world. I almost think if they had paired Lance with a man, the whole dynamic of the show would have changed and I don't think people would have taken it as seriously. What do you guys think?

I totally agree. And I find it quite odd that the general public tends to assume that male ballroom dancers are gay (even though alot of them are not), yet they dont connect the fact that those very same guys (gay or not) dance with girls. I mean, duh. Why should Lance Bass get a guy to dance with when no one else does? It makes no sense. Sheesh....non-dancers.
Side note: Now, if they were doing a same-sex dancing show where everyone got to dance with a member of the same-sex, sure. that would make sense. I probably wouldnt watch it (because I like the guy/girl relationship in dancing), but it would make sense.

Well said :-) It actually just jogged my memory...I do remember two guys dancing Pre-Champ latin together at the MIT comp prolly 3 years ago. Their technique and performance was actually quite good, but admittedly, it was rather comical watching two guys trying to do a serious rumba together. They ended up placing 5th out of 7 couples...I think it was probably just because the judges were having a hard time taking a same-sex couple seriously :( I think the same would happen with Lance if they had paired him with a guy...he might not have gotten the marks he deserves because he couldn't be taken seriously.

Will Ted McGinley Take ABC Dancing with the... Sharks?
http://community.tvguide.com/servlet/ImgServlet?mx=220&attachImage=true&contentType=image%2Fjpeg&attachment=800019580&crop=false
Ted McGinley and Inna Brayer by Chris Chavira/ABC
When Happy Days and Married With Children alum Ted McGinley joined Dancing With the Stars, fans of JumptheShark.com (http://jumptheshark.liveworld.com/forum/Ted-Mcginley/22) wondered if there was blood in the water.
McGinley is the "patron saint" of JumptheShark.com, TVGuide.com's sister site where we debate the moments when good TV shows go bad. Like the moment Fonzie strapped on water skis to, well, you know.
We've asked Jump the Shark founder Jon Hein to explain what McGinley’s casting may say about the future of Dancing. Here’s what he said.
When my inbox is flooded in a matter of seconds, one of these three things has happened.
1. A cult series has been renewed or cancelled.
2. A major character on a popular show has been killed off.
3. Ted McGinley has been cast once again.
After seeing this fall's Dancing with the Stars lineup, I have number three to thank for all that e-mail.
Let's start by saying that you must respect Ted. In spite of his track record as the patron saint of shark-jumping, he continues to get acting gigs, and thank god for that.
The Dancing with the Stars folks are fully aware of Ted's checkered past, so why take a chance on the guy? It's simple: ABC has gotten a bit cocky, but with good reason.
This is the show that has made ballroom dancing with quasi-celebrities popular, and we're talking "take a chunk out of American Idol ratings" popular. Tom Bergeron is the consummate host who laughs with us, not at us. Second careers and sold-out dancing tours are a sure thing for contestants who click with the audience.
And Dancing with the Stars has been carefully preparing for Ted. Trista Rehn? First one eliminated. Tatum O'Neal and George Hamilton? Ratings go up. Jerry Springer and champion Emmitt Smith? No problem. Heather Mills? Handled better than Sir Paul. Marie Osmond? Relaunched her career. Marlee Matlin? The hearing-impaired actress outdid Steve Guttenberg. There hasn't been a casting challenge that Bruno, Len and Carrie Anne haven't been able to handle.
Dancing with the Stars thrives on a controversial cast of characters, but this past season the ratings began to drop. This fall's lineup is already taking chances with Kim Kardashian (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/kim-kardashian/292941), Cloris Leachman (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/cloris-leachman/145244), Jeffrey Ross (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/jeffrey-ross/216404) and Susan Lucci (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/susan-lucci/175759). But the gutsy move is inviting Ted on to the dance floor with Inna Brayer.
Ted will be charming. He'll be able to dance. His smile will shine. And it all won't matter.
Good luck, Ted. It's always great to see you. The shark anxiously awaits. — Jon Hein

Got home from work just in time to catch a blurb on one of those gossip shows about how practice is going for DWTS...nothing too exciting to report. Derek has a little bit of facial hair, Julianne says she's tired and out of shape from touring with Brad Paisley (and eating too much chocolate from Hershey's, the tour sponsor), Cheryl didn't know who Maurice Greene was at first (she googled him), Corky has lost a little bit of weight it seems, and Mark seems to be coping reasonably well with Kim Kardashian (she seems totally clueless about dancing, but isn't totally inept). Wow, it really pained me to say that last one :(

I know plenty of homosexual ballroom competitors, and most of them would laugh at the very notion of dancing with a same-sex partner. It's not a matter of intolerance or homophobia...it's just how it is in the ballroom world. I almost think if they had paired Lance with a man, the whole dynamic of the show would have changed and I don't think people would have taken it as seriously. What do you guys think?
My homosexual friends have same-sex partners and dance/compete pretty much exclusively same-sex. Each year, we have two same-sex competitions in the area. I imagine it might be a bit different elsewhere.

I understand your feelings about Ms. Kardashian. I was clueless as to why the Kardashian show appeared on tv. When I found out it was because Kim was "famous" for a sex tape I decided that was one show I was never going to watch. That said, if she dances well, I'll hope she continues. If she bombs the first week, her leaving won't be any loss for me.

Edyta looks *thrilled* in that picture. I sometimes wonder if they give the pros who made it far last season the more unlikely prospects so that the pros that get bumped early get a chance to make it a little longer the next time....
Just based on those pictures, admittedly too early too tell, i think Toni & Alec and Lance & Lacey look good together (altho how the heck does Lacey dance in those sneakers??)

I agree totally with your theory...I also think they like to give pros who have already won a weaker partner the next year (think Julianne and Adam) so that the pros who haven't won yet have a better chance with the stronger partners (prolly Derek & Brooke). And I doubt they are banking on Mark and Kim getting very far...like I said earlier, she's not TOTALLY inept, but I get the feeling from her video blog that she might be a lil scared to completely let loose, which may limit her. You can tell Mark is trying to get her to come out of her shell a bit more.
And as for Lacey...that hair?! WHY???? We get it; you used to be a hair model and didn't get much say in what they did with your hair. But you have a career now and don't have to let them butcher your hair for $$! I hope the purple is gone by the premiere

While this is true, we have yet to see anyone heavily pierced, tattoed, colorfully hair-dyed, or otherwise bizarrely styled. And somehow I don't think Len would be especially welcoming if that did start to happen :nope: He seems pretty old school...I could easily picture him saying something like "Great dancing, but why the bloody heck is your hair PURPLE?!"

I think we'll have to wait an see how Lacey looks. As I recall on SYTYCD they dressed the dancers appropriately based on the dance they were doing. I'm sure Lacey will be dressed in a proper ballroom gown with proper hair and makeup for the smooth/standard numbers etc. I don't think the strip of purple hair will distract in any way.

As much as it pains me to admit it, from what I saw of Kim on her v-blog and on ET last night, she is doing alright...she seems reluctant to really let loose, though. I think at this point she is too scared of making a fool of herself to really let go and dance

Can someone be one this show as a Pro and still compete as an amateur? Inna is still a competing amateur. Will they have to turn pro?
Can't imagine that she would have to -- so long as they don't call her a "professional" then she's completely within the USA Dance rules on what an amateur can and cannot do.
Laura
08-27-2008, 03:36 PM
Good point...and it just occured to me that she is likely getting paid to do this, and I believe that would violate some of the rules for competing amateurs. I don't think you are allowed to draw a profit from your dancing if you're competing as an "amateur", unless the money somehow goes right back into your dancing (like lessons, costuming, etc.)
This is no longer the case. An "Amateur" can do whatever they want and earn as much as they want and spend it however they want. The only thing that makes them a pro is declaring themself a Pro in word or deed. That would mean something like entering a Professional event, registering with the NDCA as a Pro, or advertising themself as a Pro. Just dancing on DWTS doesn't seem to be a problem, although it would be best if DWTS remembered to not refer to Inna as Pro either.
USA Dance knows she is doing this, too, so it's not like anyone is going to be surprised to see her on TV and then suddenly yank her Amateur status....
I remember there was a big ado about this back when I was in college, and our team made ourselves available to teach lessons and do exhibition performances on campus...we were given the okay to compete as amateurs, but only if the money we made from said lessons and competitions went towards our organization and "furthering the art of Dancesport".
The rules have changed vastly since then.
Laura
08-27-2008, 03:39 PM
So...once you dance in a professional event, you can never go back to competing as an amateur?
No, you can go back, you just have to follow the rules for automatic re-instatement (such as not competing as a Pro for a certain amount of time) or by basically just asking if you can come back. A few years ago USA Dance allowed a former US Professional Rising Star Champion to come back as an Amateur, and I know several other pros who have come back. I also know of one or two who were denied.

Totally agree. It's not like ballroom is known for natural hair colors. Having a streak of purple instead of obviously fake red or obviously fake black or obviously fake platinum hair doesn't seem like a big deal.
As for Lacey being a "swing dancer," she's got just as much ballroom cred as other pros they've had on the show. She just happens to ALSO have swing credentials and was on SYTYCD.

MOST of the other Pro's are/were high level competitors at the Professional level either nationally or internationally: Corky, Karina, Louis, Charlotte, Maks, Tony, Nick, Anna and Jonathan ... I think the one's that were not at that level are the minority: Ashley, Brian, Kim

Dancing's Maks Is Back with 'the Best Partner'
http://community.tvguide.com/servlet/ImgServlet?mx=220&attachImage=true&contentType=image%2Fjpeg&attachment=800019806&crop=false
Misty May-Treanor and Maksim Chmerkovskiy by Karen Neal/ABC
Much to the dismay of Dancing with the Stars (http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/dancing-stars/191470) fans, pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/maksim-chmerkovskiy/215053) sat last season out. But now, rested and re.freshed — and having gone through some physical rehabilitation — Maks is back and polishing his moves for season seven beginning Sept. 22. Never one to hide his feelings, Maks couldn't be happier about his new partner: Two-time Olympic gold medal-winning beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/misty/259330). — Deborah Starr Seibel
TVGuide.com: You said you needed a break from the show. But did you miss it?
Maksim Chmerkovskiy: I actually did. And I'm happy to be back. The only thing I was worried about was I thought that I was gonna get punished for taking time off and get somebody to dance with who was not good. But they ended up rewarding me by giving me probably the best partner I could have. I thought I couldn't top Mel B (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/melanie-brown/165711).
TVGuide.com: Misty is better than Mel B?
Chmerkovskiy: I was shocked, and I don’t throw that word around lightly. People are going to be very surprised by how well she's going to dance. Laila (Ali, season four) had an incredible work ethic. But I could be too much for her. She'd say: You've gotta back off. And then Mel (season five) was just this incredible personality. But she had zero attention span. So here, in Misty, I have a combination of the best qualities of both. She's like a perfect person to love. She has this aura of sweetness, and she'll practice for as long as it takes. Let Cheryl and Julianne [Hough] collect the trophies. I'll collect friends for life.
[B]TVGuide.com: Did your body benefit from the time off?
Chmerkovskiy: I took care of my health while I was off. I did this groundbreaking thing called MUA (a chiropractic treatment, Manipulation Under Anesthesia). They manipulated my muscles and broke up all the scar tissue. I was concerned about my lower back and my knees. And I had a small tear in a ligament in my left shoulder. But now, I feel great. I feel a lot more flexible.
TVGuide.com: You sound excited to be back.
Chmerkovskiy: For some of the other pros, it's just a show. Or a stepping stone to something else. But for me, it's me representing the ballroom world, so I have to do the best I can. I put a lot into it. And I have to do it on my own terms.

I could see it happening more often in bigger, more liberal cities (i.e. San Fran), but I'm stuck in the Midwest...the Bible Belt. Red states as far as the eye can see. Pretty darn conservative...it just doesn't happen here.
We have danced (socially) across Eastern Iowa for at least a dozen years and rarely see same-sex couples. Have NEVER seen a male couple. Sometimes female couples are dancing because of a shortage of male partners, or one of the pair is a female dance instructor, or the gals just choose to dance with other gals once in a while even though they have come to the dance with their regular male dance partner.
We are friends with one female gay couple who regularly go to ballroom social dances but they are the ONLY gay couple we know of among hundreds of regular social dancers we see in the area. No one ever seems to object to this, nor even raise their eyebrows. I'm fairly certain that more same-sex dance couples would feel welcome at our dances.
I must say that most social dancers we know (and maybe most Iowans) would strongly object to being labeled as "Pretty darn conservative... ." I'm sorry that you feel like you are "stuck in the Midwest."

'Dancing With the Stars': Two weeks until Season 7 (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2008/09/dancing-with-th.html)

You've probably been distracted lately -- by political conventions, hurricanes and another O.J. trial starting up -- to take in the real news: namely, that "Dancing With the Stars" kicks off Season 7 two weeks from today.
Now that you've absorbed this news, you're probably beside yourself with excitement, and how are you possibly going to wait two whole weeks? Well, here are some tidbits of "DWTS" news to tide you over:
-- "DWTS" pro Tony Dovolani (paired last season with semifinalist Marissa Jaret Winokur) and his wife just had twins (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20224124,00.html).
-- Cloris Leachman was turned down twice for the show (http://www.postchronicle.com/news/entertainment/tittletattle/article_212170384.shtml) because of her age. And now that age (82) is being shouted from the mountaintops in "DWTS" news releases!
-- One of the new pros on the show is rumored to be ostracized (http://celebrities.gearlive.com/vip/article/q108-backstage-drama-at-dancing-with-the-stars/) by fellow dancers because she's been paired with the early favorite, Lance Bass.
That last item, or blind item, is a reference to Lacey being given the cold shoulder by Hough and Burke. But, given the source, I don't believe it. Besides, we all know that there isn't any backstage drama at DwtS. Everyone likes everyone else. ;):D

I was more surprised by the twins...7 lbs EACH?! POOR LINA!!!! But glad to see they are a good, healthy weight...so often multiples are so tiny when they're born :D

I was LOLing at Susan Lucci having to tell Tony "What are you waiting for? Go!" when he had to cut a lesson short because Lina was in labor. Congrats to Tony and Lina. (Hey, a boy and a girl, same age...ready-made junior couple! ;) )

Lance Bass' Take on Same-Sex DWTS Partnerships

Dancing With the Stars partners, Lacey Schwimmer and Lance Bass by Craig Sjodin/ABC
Lance Bass (http://www.tvguide.com/celebrities/lance-bass/161180) may be the first openly gay contestant on Dancing with the Stars (http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/dancing-stars/191470), but that doesn't mean he thinks he should be doing the tango with a male partner on the show.
In an interview with E! Online (http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/marc_malkin/b29089_lance_bass_talks_marriage_kids_same-sex.html), Bass expressed that having a male partner would "overshadow everything else going on." According to the current DWTS contestant, "It would just be like making fun of something. But if it was another show with all guys dancing and all girls dancing, that's a different story. I think that's sexy."
Lacey Schwimmer, Bass' pro partner, expressed some concern about her partnership. "I just hope it doesn't hurt the gay community in any way because, you know, we definitely can be scrutinized and picked apart," says Schwimmer. "I definitely feel a responsibility of making sure I represent well."
The former 'NSYNC member also revealed his motives behind signing on with DWTS. "The guys [from 'NSYNC] always told me how terrible of a dancer I am, so I kind of just wanted to prove to myself that I could learn something crazy," says Bass. "Also my grandmother and mother love the show, so I wanted to do something for them."
Do you think a same-sex partner would have over-shadowed this season’s competition? — Gina DiNunno

Glad to see I'm not the only one that thought the idea of a same-sex partnership on DWTS was a bad one...he's right, it would have dominated everyone's attention and probably detracted from what the show is all about - dancing.
