Only in America...

...do drive up ATM machines have Braille lettering

...can pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance

...do drugstores make the sick people walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescription while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front

...do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the drievway and put our uselesss junk in the garage

...do we use the word "politics" to describe the process so well: "Poli" -- Latin for many, and "tics" -- meaning blood sucking creatures

... that someone would go to Wal-Mart, pay for a couple of hundred dollars worth of goods with a US$1m note and expect change

Heck, I'd be happy to give them change for that! Here, let me just go get my piggy bank... they can have all my change!

When I was in graduate school in Bloomington IN, one of my favorite sights was this little greasy spoon on Kirkwood Avenue. There was a sign in the window that read, "Braille menus available."

As for your alternative etymology of "politics"--

... do people order a big mac, large fries, and a diet coke.

pygmalion
04-03-2004, 04:11 PM
LOL. I've done that myself. Is there any reason why people should request the additional 700 calories (or whatever) in a regular drink. The 2000 calories in their value meal should be enough, don't you think?

pygmalion
04-03-2004, 04:19 PM
I was wrong. A 64oz coke has only 600 calories (according to dottisweightlosszone stats for McDonalds) not 700. But the diet coke has zero. Hmm ...

NeoDevin

Or you could just do like I do, and stop going to McD's since they stopped making pizza!

Umm. Hate to tell you this, but only selected McDonalds' EVER made pizza.

Fortunately, one of the pizza-serving McDonalds is near me. The biggest MickeyD's in the world is less than ten miles from my house. They serve pizza, foccacia sandwiches, gourmet ice cream, and lots of other exotic stuff. That's the upside of living in a resort town. 8) Ha!

pygmalion

Um. Did I mention that they have a HUGE arcade? 8)

Mickey D's makes pizza?

I'm second to none in my admiration of the Number 4 Value Meal, but I must turn up my identifiably Italo-American nose at the thought of a McPizza. That sounds like a profanation, a crime against nature!

Used to be lots of them around here made pizza. Then they all stopped, and I haven't gone back.

Unlike GR no part of me is Italian, but McPizza is just wrong!

Note to Scorp, before you even start--I am not participating in a what part of me is what thread. No way. Don't even do there! :nope:

Well, on the other hand, there's always the strictly juvenile behavior thread.... :?

No--just trying to anticipate you a little, partner. From what I've read of your posts--you wouldn't miss an opportunity to mess with this thread-waiting-to-happen!

Who me? Surely you jest...you...scaramouch you! :D

As far as the Pizza goes, my mother was 100% Italian and came from a long line of great cooks. After growing up on hand made pasta, meat sauce and pizza, I have a hard time eating Italian food anywhere! I simply can't stand Olive Garden...phonies I tell you, phonies!

There's nothing like crust made made from scratch with fresh basil, oregano and rosmary, and hunks of salami and peperoni...then the left over dough is rolled into balls with sauce and meat in the center and deep fried in olive oil...mere words don't do it justice!

We can surely get spoiled by good, authentic cooking! That's why I love to cook...one of my favorite hobbies...

I'll set the pizza conversation aside for the moment, in deference to the Italian mamas aboard.

However, if you ever have the opportunity, you should try the gourmet McDonalds store. The grilled grouper sandwiches and creme brulee ought to convince you that that MickeyD's people mean business. 8)

I was quoting from the original album--but I think I'm a little more aged and decrepit than you, Scorp!

Umm. I caught the reference ... from both the album (yes, vinyl. My brother had it) and the movie. Saw it on opening day.

I was making a snide remark about this crew's apparent inability to stay on point.

coming in late and veering back to that McDonalds thing...

I have a friend in Bueno Aires who told me the McDonalds there...delivers!

How has this idea not caught on in the US?

I doubt they could sell people on the idea of tipping for service while buying a Big Mac!

Actually, the KFC near me tried delivery service for while, but it didn't work out. I don't think enough people used the service to make it worthwhile to the store. *shrug*

I heard about that somewhere too! I think it's a terrifying idea - now you can burn even fewer calories getting your McD's ... sounds like a couch-potato's paradise. Just as well we all have dancing to keep us fit!
