I'll believe it when I see it. Variety shows are pretty popular in the Latin community around the world. But they seem to have died in the US in the mid-seventies.
I wonder if they'll make a comeback.

Yeah, I just saw and advertisement for Nick & Jessica's new variety show to air April 11 on ABC. We'll see how it turns out. :) I really the liked things like the Carol Burnette show, Sonny & Cher but that was a different decade. Hopefully, they'll at least keep their clothes on.

Carol Burnett rocked. But there was also "Laugh In."

I'm not quite convinced that it would work. Maybe as a short-term show (see "Dance Fever" and "Star Search"), but in this age of cable and "reality TV" (actors, we don't need no stinkin' actors), there still has to be compelling interest for someone to watch. Otherwise, why watch another variety show when Leno/Letterman are on later?

Carol Burnett is a classic. And her zany team of actors certainly added to the appeal. I think Lyle Waggoner was the best. He couldn't keep a straight face to save his soul. I don't know what was funniest -- the sketches, or watching the actors try not to laugh.

The only other thing closest to a true Variety show currently (if it's still on) is "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" They should have a couple more special guest appearances by famous acting-type people (Robin Williams they did once)... or not (Playboy playmates? What's up with that!!!? :) :) :) )

I've gotta go with Conway and Korman trying to cut each other up. It would be very hard not to laugh with Tim Conway pushing your buttons!

Good point. Harvey Korman generally couldn't hold himself together too well, either.
My favorite Carol Burnett sketches of all time? "Went with the Wind," the Gone with the Wind spoof where Carol "saw it in the window and just couldn't resist (the new dress, complete with curtain rods. )
And then there's the Sunset Boulevard spoof. I still remember her enormous eyebrows and strange facial expressions. Oh yeah, and Harvey Korman playing the somewhat eccentric butler.
Classics!

The original skits of Mama' Family(before the acutal show) were funny on Carol Burnett as well. :D

Yeah, every time I picture her walking down the stairs with the curtain rod kills me with laughter.

Oh and the other one. Mr. Tudball (I think that's character's name) with the silly secretary and the pencil sharpeners. Hilarious.
