Okay, Americans, fess up. How many of you truly forgot to change your clocks this morning, and showed up at church (or Barnes and Noble LOL) an hour late?
Be honest.

A friend of mine, who I will leave anonymous, clearly overlooked this as well...
We were on the phone this morning as he was driving into town and I was trying to get an estimate of when he thought he was going to get here. It quickly became apparent that it wasn't what time he thought it was...

Change clocks? Only becomes relevant when it's time to watch Law and Order or the Sopranos!
I lived for 6 years in Indiana, watching the whole world change around us. Daylight savings time is the dumbest idea anyone ever came up with. Where's the "Only in America" thread??

Was that where the idea came from - the US? There is a constant argument here with Queensland not having it, but most other states do. It just adds confusion and serves no purpose. I personally don't see the point of changing the clock twice a year. There are the same amount of hours, after all. You're not actually "saving daylight".

Not sure whose bright idea it was to start daylight savings time. It certainly makes for some long, leisurely summer evenings, though. There's another thread about this somewhere, which links to a page with more info.l It's by no means universal. Hmm. I'll find that link later today, Pacion.
Hey All! I'm pretty sure that this site does a pretty nice job of explaining y we have DST http://www.timeanddate.com/time/aboutdst.html . Hope this helps :D . Take Care

Has British/European Summer Time begun yet?
pygmalion

I believe it started March 28 for most European countries.
I couldn't get up this morning, btw. Those first few days after the transition are tough for me. :?

Just for the record. It's 7:43 PM, and still light outside. Daylight savings time ROCKS!

One more example of the absent minded prof... the one I teach for missed lecture on Monday. Why? Daylight savings.

Don't believe all that absent-minded prof stuff. I think she/he probably just wanted to sleep late, and figured daylight savings time was a good excuse.
I literally know more than a handful of guys who spent their undergrad years often unbathed. They were trying to impress the world with how devoted they were to science. These mad scientist types can't always be trusted. LOL.

So, did everyone remember to set their clocks forward last night?
Wondering whether our canadian, australian, UK, and european members do the same at the same time, now. Globalization and all, heh.

Come to think of it...my blackberry & laptop changed on their own. In the whole house, I only have the kitchen clock to take care of manually.

My laptop changed on its own but my phone didn't. Well, it did, but I had to turn it off and on for it to reset. Good thing I woke up in the middle of the night to answer the call of nature...while I was up, I checked my phone, saw that it hadn't changed and so power cycled it.
Now I have to get ready for the comp...I hate that time changed last night and that at this particular comp I'm dancing early! I'm so tired!

Yeah but at least you won't be losing a whole hour between going to bed on Saturday night and waking up Sunday morning.

Exactly. Then again, I'll be up late with a bunch of eastern europeans on a saturday night. Point rendered moot...I will be very lucky to get 4 hrs sleep, lol.

:uplaugh: Ah, yes, the Ouzo would contribute to the rough morning after. I remember having some when I went to Greece and not knowing how potent it was. Needless to say I was in a happy mood the rest of the day.

Ouch - Never seems to be enough time to sleep before the Sunday of a comp normally - Good Luck Laura!

i have heard ouzo + coffee called "sexy coffee" in greece. that stuff is quite happy-making, indeed! :)
we're totally off-topic but... i don't care... it's DST, after-all... worthless tradition.
i'm part of a long lineage that teethed on ouzo, lol.

Likewise. Got home at 3-something (which, technically, would be 4-something)...I didn't even sleep nearly enough, and it's already after noon. Crap. I feel like I need to start getting ready for the week already. I need my nap, but don't feel like there's time.

First condsidered in the USA by Benjamin Franklin but not abopted until 1915 by the British..
I agree that now it's just a PITA. If a country is going to do it then all it's parts should, not just some parts.. In Canada every province except Saksatchewan has DST. I understand that the state of Arizona does not either. So the people there, in essence live in 2 different times zones throughout the year... Stupid, imho.
And he's another thought, what about education people to save engery instead of legislating it..
In parts of Canada and Alaska there are places that don't get dark at all for part of the summer.. So is it really going to make any difference if it's 2 am or 3am when the sun dips below the horizon for 20 mins? Akkkk, i think not!
Here in Vancouver BC the sun comes up about 4 am and sets about 10:30 pm. Do we really need it? I think not!!
Opppsss sorry that was a bit of a rant and so long but it's been a thorn in my side for some time now...

Mine too. The moment someone talks about getting more daylight they set me off ranting and now they know not to talk about DST with me. I suffer for over a month getting used to the change in wake-up time each time it happens. 2 months of poorer sleep and more irritable days. 1/6th of my year. Two months more than what I wish for...

The solution a gymnasium full of us took was to stay up all night. Our 3rd annual "Lindy for Life" 24-hour danceathon ran from 10:00 Saturday to 11:00 Sunday. I was there from midnight to 11AM, after having spent an evening of WCS that had started at 6PM.
Two "coincidences" that were probably planned:
1. This year it took place at a 24-hour Fitness.
2. At 2 AM the DJ played "Two O'Clock Jump". And since that was the time when DST was to take effect, I performed my two o'clock jump by setting my wristwatch ahead an hour.
BTW, we raised over $170,000 for the City of Hope.

Friend used to use the October time change for a 13 hour lan(computer gaming) party. And yes, I was enough of a nerd that I went several years. :) His birthday was right around then, so his wife let him throw the party as a gift to himself. Played from 7pm-7am, lots of good gaming, tons of good food, etc. Was a good time, nerdish or not.

Somebody used to throw an annual all-night dance party in the fall. When I went, it was on the night that we came off of DST, so the night lasted an hour longer than the party announcement had posted. I don't know whether he had realized that when he planned the party.
