View Full Version : Any other swing dancers in Seattle?

I've been swing dancing socially for 8-9 months now. Because I've only been doing it socially I'm still not any good, because I haven't taken any lessons, and I've just gone out to crowded ballrooms and picked up what I can from dancing. I'm just learning lindy hop (and got incredibly lucky tonight by going to this one awesome place I heard about where they taught me the basic steps through what seemed like a two hour private lesson for free).
I'm just wondering because while I've made tons of friends, and I've never been happier since I've started swing dancing, it seems like I could learn so much more if I broadened my horizons some more. So this is my introduction! Hello.
Anyway, I'll be at Century Ballroom tonight dancing it up. If anybody else in the Seattle area is there, now that there will be at least someone else who comes here dancing with you in spirit.

Looks like there's a good lindy scene in seattle. check out http://www.whiteheat.org/ , they have swing-specific forums there apparently

some pointers -
Century Ballroom on Wed is better than Sun (sun is all ages - too crowded, and bad dilution of skills).
The Russian Center in Capitol Hill on Thursdays.
Sonny Newmans Dance studio on Mondays.
http://www.savoyswing.com/ has plenty of pointers as well. and of course, whiteheat.org.

The reason I don't go to Century on Wednesday's is because I'm not 21. I started swing dancing when I was 17, and I'm still only 18 now. I still have a few years to go. I plan to start going to the Russian Center though. I've heard bad things about Sonny Newman's though, although I haven't had a chance to check it out for myself. Basically I have heard that it is a small floor and the people who inhabit it are snobby and will get annoyed with you if you try to go there without being really good.
I have found a place in Woodinville that meets every Saturday night, which is still pretty small. Everyone there is amazingly nice, and there is a teacher there who is incredibly good. I'm learning Lindy hop and I have the basic swing out and a few moves down after a two weeks going once a week there and going to Century so I plan to branch out some more, especially once I get Lindy down some more. My biggest problem is I'm a student at the UW so I have classes on Friday mornings at 9:30, so I have to worry about that. I'm golden on Saturday and Sunday nights though.
Any other tips though? Especially for learning Lindy. I'm having trouble, especially since most of the people I started going with and learning with originally don't seem as impassioned towards swing dancing, most don't seem interested in learning Lindy and are content with just East Coast, and at places like Century it seems the people who already know Lindy refuse to dance with anyone who doesn't know it or is just learning it, but those who don't know it can't really help someone who already does know it. I'm in the process of learning it via classes, but practice is always a great thing.

one other good option is to join a performance troupe. they often do have a lot of under 21's.

Try Halo. Halo is a part of Century Ballroom but is in a separate space. Go to the Century Ballroom website and click on Halo on the left side of the page. They are open to all ages. They have West Coast Swing classes on Tuesday night and swing on the 1st, 3rd & 5th Saturdays of the month. The swing instructor on Tuesday nights is Pete Green (if you don't know who he is do a search for him on YouTube) since he is also into Lindy I'm sure he could help you out.
Look at Ron Bolin's website (your will need to search on his name). His website has a calendar of just about every place to dance in Seattle.
If you are interested in West Coast Swing there is a great dance every Saturday at the Kirkland Dance Center. The Seattle Swing Dance club has dances in West Seattle on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month.
Good Luck,
Tika
