So I have this cha cha showcase coming up - 2 couples will be dancing - the two ladies (myself included) need to coordinate. I don't want to spend a lot of money on the outfit - hadn't planned on doing it to begin with. Found these options:
http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/edressme_2012_11663396 (http://www.edressme.com/blackflapper-0-102b-b.html) Dress comes in many colors and is only $72.
http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/edressme_2012_21898749 (http://www.edressme.com/twentiescami2.html) Shirt is only $32 and can be worn with black pants or jeans...
Any thoughts on these or has anyone found something else somewhere that would be cute (and not pricey)?
Thanks in advance!

I like the dress; I would personally steer clear of pants myself because I have the habit of catching my foot in the bottom of them. Haven't gone down yet, but I figure it's just a matter of time :).

I like the dress. I think complementary colors rather than the same color would be cool.

I'll give a second vote for complimentary colors. I'm going to push for same thing for a rumba showcase we're doing with multiple colors (and insisting on it for the two pros in my tango showcase. It's my showcase and I'll have different colors if I want! *pout* ;) )

I like that idea...

Do you have to pay for the dresses, since it's your showcase? Or does the studio have a wardrobe of dresses that it pulls from for showcases?

I also prefer the dress, but make sure the other lady is ok with fringe. While fringe can make girls look curvy in a good way, sometimes fringe can make curvy girls look *too* curvy in a bad way.

I'm paying for the dresses. Luckily, as sig line shows, I have an in with a dressmaker. ;)
Actually, just talked to pro about that last night, think she and buddy teacher had expected to pay for the dresses themselves. I told them that I expected to pay, as I knew our biggest local studio does it that way, and it certainly makes sense. I don't expect pros to pay for a costume/dress for a showcase that they might never be able to use for anything else (some of the costumes are definitely going to be limited to jsut thta showcase, or a VERY similar one). Luckily, in this case I suspect the dresses will ahve some other use for pro and buddy teacher.

Yes, we have to buy something or pull from our own wardrobe...just a studio showcase, so no big fancy costume needed.

These are just a few things I found...any other ideas that people have seen in the way of cute practicewear or streetwear for a cha routine?

Well, I actually have a cute two-piece set that would be great for a showcase. It is a "car wash" type skirt and the top is a midriff; you would either need to wear a stoned bra or you could wear the tie-side in the back, which also looks nice. I have never worn it, and I probably never will. It's purple. Let me know if you're interested and I can take some shots of it.
Alternatively, you could go over and see my friends in Brooklyn and they can whip you up something nice for short money.

MQ...would need two of whatever it is, so first option wouldn't work, but 2nd option is a great possibility. How are you dealing with them and the practice clothes...sending emails with photos of stuff you like? What about measurements? Did you take your own when you ordered the dresses or did they?

Another fringe possibility - looks like a tank dress with fringe hem...though not sure this would help minimize size as tank looks pretty form fitting

This one even better than previous fringe dress! very elegant! The fringe should look very nice in movement. The previous one was kind of short.

I like that better for a rumba...but very nice.

Mamboqueen actually made an excellent point. longer latin dress is really nice for Rumba - more flowy and romantic feeling; Cha Cha dress could be shorter than Rumba dress since Cha cha is faster and shorter dress might be less friction (just a thought); so both fringe dress are really nice:)

So basically, NJD, you should get both dresses and ask your pro about getting a rumba showcase choreographed. :)

Can't believe I am going to say this, but I have enough dresses! For now...

Beware of Really Long Fringe (porcupine/helicopter aesthetic issues aside). I have a dress almost identical to the longer black one, and just walking around the dang fringe would get knotted up in itself. The fringe was "looped" though, not cut ends, so I suspect that was part of the issue.
Take it you aren't a fan of the fringe, joe?!? ;)
Makes no difference to me whether or not you wanna look like a hedgehog. ;)

Though with such an open back, do you have to add cups to the front or some sort of convertible, backless bra??

Bra with clear straps

Stick-on cups. Clear straps are still shiny and visible if you're picky about these things. Or one of those really low-back bras. REALLY low in this case....
Bra with clear straps
Tacky.

Heh, was supposed to have a question mark there. I'm far from an expert on women's clothing, obviously. :)
