Dana & Frigoli are the Milli Vanilli of A.T, they're just plain bad.
Now for the others, you mean best as performers? or as teachers? And in nuevo style only? Or all the styles?
My vote goes to...
1 [whoever, doesn't matter] & Geraldine
2. Osvaldo & Lorena
3. Chicho & [whoever, doesn't matter]

1) For the best synthesis of Milonguero and traditional Salón: Geraldine y Javier (not by far that good with Ezequiel, saw them last week at Hamburg international TangoFestival - Nada mas).
2) For ennobling NeoTango to the Salón style of the future: Chicho y Eugenia (no other).
3) For pushing the envelope: Pablo Inza y Mariela o Eugenia.

Too incredibly difficult to even offer an opinion. Too many variables...like comparing apples to thunderstorms. A serious list would change almost daily and/or by performance.

Yeah, I'm kinda lost in this one too. Besides the obvious bit about different performances by the same folks, and my own ever changing tastes as I grow and learn, there are just too many people that I've only seen on YouTube vs live, and too many dancers well known in Europe that I've never even heard of yet...
The first time I saw a video of Tete, I thought... meh. But once I understood classic tango better (instead of just being awed by show tango) I watched the video again and was awed.
But frankly, the more tango videos I watch, the more they all start to look alike again.. sorta like shopping for a wedding dress. Overexposure doesn't actually make me more discerning, it just makes me glassy-eyed...

What a weird thread!
Does it matter?
Is it not entirely subjective?
Does anybody, apart from the couple in their marketing hats, really care?

Ok, fine. I'll play. here are my all time favorites and they have not changed in three years. Unfortunatelty, they are no longer couples:
1) Miriam Larici & Hugo Patyn (They got divorced this year)
2) Carlos Gavito and Marcela Duran (Gavito died in 2005)
3) Natalia Hills & Francisco Forquera (They split this year)
One thing they all have in common, they all were the original cast for "Forever Tango." None of them are nuevo. All of them have been in broadway. My preferences alone.
Oh, and Miriam Larici is a friend. Every time I dance with her, I'm compelled to be extra "Hammy." She is after all one of the best tangueras in the world. :)

Can I play as well? ;)
This is my current list even though I really would like to divide down and do a whole lot of separate lists (boys/girls/live/dead/seen live/seen on VT etc etc ) :
1. Julio and Corina
2. Carlos Gavito and Marciela (or anyone)
3. Chicho and Juana
Of these I've only seen Julio and Corina live :(
Perhaps a better question would be : if you knew a couple were travelling to your country, who would you cross the country to see? Or miss your daughter's wedding for?

How can one possibly say: i Know some lovley couples here and from the states, Chicho I admire, Juan Carlos Copes has to be a master, but have never met and I love Rodolpho Aquirre as he taught me all the important stuff and dances as beutifully with Miho his Japanese partner that I have had a tear come to my eye.
is it really important?

The point is not to agree - just to see who one most admires. It's interesting actually that most people rate the same couples so highly.
Funnily enough El Chino was one of the first people who I also learnt from and I agree he is brilliant.
I've used some of the comments here to find on YT exciting stuff I havent seen before so I think it's useful from that point of view as well.

I don't like the title of this thread. It's too much like those million and one articles in magazines - 10 best 10 worst her 7 style secrets the 276 sexual acts he most wants you to do!
But if you had simply asked who are some of the tango people I most admire, and why, I'd have been OK with it. But trying to rank couples 1,2,3 is really stupid and childish.
So who do I admire? A number of people, and each for different reasons.
L.A.'s Mark Celaya and Joan Yarfitz for putting on a weekly milonga for years despite the hardships of such an endeavour. (Mark passed away a couple of years ago after a long distressing illness.)
Sebastia Arce and Mariana Montes for many imaginative and skilled dance performances that I find lovely to watch.
Nito and Elba Garcia for teaching and performing for decades.
Miguel Angel Zotto and Milena Plebs for combining street and elegant and show tango into the influential shows Tango x 2 and Perfumes de Tango.
I could go on, but it would get boring. I do want to mention two people I admire who are not a couple – Gustavo Naveira and Fabian Salas. They laid the groundwork for a way of teaching and performing tango that emphasizes fundamental principles rather than "a suitcase of steps."

Was thinking the exact same thing.

No...it' not. Perhaps, it isn't stupid and childish, but it is practically ridiculous...kind of like Peolple Mag's Sexies Man or Prettiest Woman in the World. Yeah, right...inclusive of whom, by what criteria, and by who's standards?

For heavens sake guys we answer these sort of questions all the time dont we? "Top 5 tunes you like at Christmas" "Top 3 cars you want to drive" etc
I dont really see the difference here. Fine if you dont want to "play the game". But it's only fun and this is not the US Presidential election (where what you say may come back to haunt you!)
Yes, it would be nice to change the title of the thread but I didnt start it in the first place so I cant - can anyone?
Anyway if noone wants to play I guess this thread can slowly sink back to oblivion ....

I agree Captain. It's not clear why people can't either lighten up, or just ignore the thread. I don't have any candidates for the top three, but I enjoy reading what other people thing on the subject.
Now please excuse me, while I go out to get the latest edition of People magazine, on who the prettiest women in the world are.

Ditto.
If nothing else, it provides some interesting lists of people I might not have seen and therefore search out.
Besides... while people quibble over the wording of the title, please keep in mind that not everyone here has English as a first language and the intent is more important than the nuances of phrasing and word choice.

The reason why I took the stand that I have is not b/c I don't enjoy the game, or mind the inference, rather it is b/c we have had previous issues to arise by some attempting to define right/wrong, better vs cra-p by the supposed master who taught it (if so and so said/did it, then it must be gospel). I just wanted to not go there.

Practically it can only be useful, if only at local level. Knowing who are the three most appreciated dancers/teachers in town/county/state can only help when you take up A.T.
by what criteria, and by who's standards?
By which criteria? By the highest number of votes.

Yes, and the highest number of votes for a world title only apply if the whole world were voting.

You cant answer yes to an a multiple choice question!;)
to paraphrase Rumi "Outside of right or wrong, best, second best tango there is a milonga. I'll dance with you there."

Bump.
OK, I just got back home from the hospital, (surgery), and I need something to do while sitting around the house recovering for the next week or so (not to mention how long it will be before I can dance again).
The bottom line is that I need some new videos to watch, so I don't care whether you like this thread or not, just come up with some videos of your favorite dancers.
:p
I'll do my part (later, after I've recovered, some day, maybe), and come up with a completely fair and objective way to decide a winner.
So can you help me out?
:D

From the youtube videos I've watched, I like Sebastian Arce and Mariana Montes the best for overall dancing, and Javier Rodriguez with whoever for milonga. Arce-Montes are so inventive, musical, and just quite simply awesome, though some of the things they do are too crazy. But they seem like great, funny people. And basically I am a Javier Rodriguez wannabe when it comes to dancing milonga... some day... some day.

Who are the "best" couples? Everyone has a different answer. We all have individual preferences and tastes.
Ten years ago a tango association in Buenos Aires asked the public to vote for the BEST OF THE 20TH CENTURY. Ballots were distributed at the milongas. Three votes could be cast in each of the following categories:
The best tango
The best milonga
The best vals
The best orchestra
The best quartet
The best quintet
The best sextet
The best male singer
The best female
The best author
The best composer
The best bandoneonist
The best pianist
The best violinist
The best bass player
The best guitarist
It's interesting to note that best dancer didn't make the list.
