Seems like a slow day on the boards, plus a lot of us have just returned from either Embassy or Windy City, and I'm sure you've all got your fair share of "ugly costume" stories. So let's hear 'em! :spam:

One of the worst I've ever seen was at my very first collegiate competition back in 2003. A girl from another school was wearing the most ghastly Pepto-Bismol pink crushed velvet dress...it looked like her mother had whipped it up for her in an hour or so using an old Redbook pattern and a manual sewing machine. It had all sorts of weird cutouts and a Nehru jacket neck, and let's just say it was...ill fitting  I swore that moment never to wear 1) velvet, and 2) that shade of pink to a comp...EVER. Edit that - ever in MY LIFE.

Just thought of another one...a Latin pro/am competitor at OSB in '04 had on by far, the TINIEST costume I have ever seen. Picture a pair of low-rise boyshorts, a bra, and a scarf attaching them. YIKES! It wasn't necessarily ugly, but it was just so...REVEALING  And when her pro took her down into a split, the entire spectator section in Battelle Hall was assaulted with a view of her, ahem, "nether regions". WARDROBE MALFUNCTION!!!!

I take it there's no video... :p

I'm just glad the feathers fad died out. Back when our studio did its first comp about 8 years ago, there was one lady who had a Latin outfit that was covered in feathers. When she did a cha-cha, it was like a fog descended on the room... we had to sweep the floor after each heat she danced in.

And in tbe interest of fairness, I'll tell one on the guys... A comp I went to a couple of years ago, there was a guy dancing smooth who had the absolute loudest jacket I've ever seen. It was the color of Dorothy's ruby slippers, and totally covered in sequins. And he had on a multi-colored plaid shirt underneath it. I was sorely tempted to walk up to him and ask him what club he was appearing at that week, and whether or not there was a two-drink minimum. :p

Now that we're picking on the guys...I hate it when a guy dresses in one color (besides black, and sometimes brown) head-to-toe to match his partner! It looks so darn goofy :uplaugh: I once saw a man in an entire hot pink costume (yes, even his SHOES) to match his partner. I wondered if he did that voluntarily, or if his partner had held his "man parts" hostage :bandit:

Yes, yes, yes! Really dislike that.

Please no shiny colored pants. No jade green. No emerald blue. No cherry red. No hot pink.

Not a fan of white pants on a man either, which I have occasionally seen even when the partner is not wearing white.

On the other hand, I'm equally disliking the fact that in the regular, non-dance world, high-waisted pants for women are making a comeback. Yuck! Why?

Case in point on the men: this year at OSB, I think it was Ilya Ifraimov (Nadia Goulina's partner) that was in head-to-toe cherry red to match Nadia's dress. AT THE PRO LEVEL. RIDICULOUS! I felt like I was watching Bozo the clown doing the rumba. Go check it out on youtube, it's truly a spectacle :uplaugh:

As for the resurgence of high-waisted pants for women, I guess mom jeans have finally caught on with the mainstream! I bet a lot of women like them because they can camoflage a post-baby paunch better...too bad that guys outside the ballroom world can't wear them to cover up their beer gut!

I saw a dress at a certain comp that had a skirt that looked like a carpet. I guess it was suppose to be feathers but it was so fine that it looked like a carpet. One side has this fine carpet material and the other side had plain mesh just like a carpet. It even moved like a carpet would if you attached it to your hiny. I was like, "What the heck was she thinking???" Why would anyone pay for that??? I have a pic but the comp was this year so I find it inappropriate to post.

Maybe it really WAS carpet! Yulia wore a dress at USDSC two years ago that looked like it was made from the same peachy-satin drapes that were hanging in the hotel room...who knows, maybe something terrible happened with her costume at the last minute and she was forced to improvise with what was laying around (i.e. hotel drapes, carpet remnants) :nope:

I think I know what material you are talking about, and perhaps even the dress in question. The material is mesh on one side with very fine fringy bits that stick up on the other side, like a shag rug, right? I agree that it didn't flow very well at all.

Heh, sorry to disappoint, but I will be wearing a shirt. ;)

Actually, still haven't put it all together yet. Getting new latin pants made (just got measured yesterday), and not happy with tie I got, so might actually end up making one myself. Since it doesn't have to actually tie, I don't have to mess with the hard things (interlining, etc) that you do in a real tie.

Okay, I have one. I need to preface this by saying I am not a small person, so I do know of what I speak as trying to dress myself is a never ending challenge.

I saw a larger young lady (and by that I mean, she was not a 0 or a 2) wear a costume with feathers coming down her shoulder (as in a sleeve) on one side and feathers coming down the opposite leg to around her knee (obviously a Latin dress). The other side was a bra-type thing on the top and, if I remember correctly, a skirt on the other side. It was an asymetrical effect. I remember thinking she was very pretty but that the outfit did her no favors.

At AAC there was one feathered rhythm (latin? I can't remember for sure) dress that had a giant "flower" made out of feathers up on one shoudler. Do'nt remember her dancing or what she even looked like, because i couldn't look away from that flower... :/

One smooth dress comes to mind... form fitting "mermaid" style I think they call it, mock turtle neck, long sleves... black and all sequined.. open back with a kind of spider web design... it seemed nice... Until I saw the complete front, it had a big ivory/gold sequined palm tree on it that ran from the top of the collar bone to the hem of the dress... it was... an interesting design choice.

In SOME of these cases... they HAVE to know what kind of decision they're making.. I mean the goal is to be as attention getting as possible while dancing right? Some of these dresses you can't help but continually look it! But the other side of the coin is that while yeah, can't take eyes off the dancer....but no one is concentrating on their dancing!

That I do hate. I don't know why they wear feather boas or worst...capes. I have seen some costumes with mini capes and I absolutely hate it. Don't care who is wearing it, what color, hate it. On a lighter note, that doesn't mean I hate their dancing:)

I'm not a fan of feathers on Latin dresses, for the simple reason that it seems to weigh down the skirt...and when the skirt doesn't move, it makes it seem as though the dancer is not moving with enough impact :( I like it on standard, though, because it's more toward the bottom of the dress which isn't going to move much anyway...and the wind created when standard dancers move just makes the feathers billow gently and it looks so darn pretty :)

I came to the realization during practice last night that I also dislike really, really strappy costumes for girls - unless the girl doesn't have an ounce of fat on her body, cause the strappier the costume, the more it tends to make the skin "pooch" out and make even the skinniest girls look puffy. Even worse if it's black - makes the girls look all dominatrix-y

I don't think she looks like she has a big butt at all. I have a big butt. I could not wear something like that myself...but I think it works great for her.

My least favorite dresses (and thankfully they are rare) have faux animals on them. I don't mean the fabric print...I mean like a fake fox or some other creature. Dance with your partner...not some hapless animal.

The snake on the first dress is at least a subtle quirk. The second dress, however, looks like it started out as a normal black costume, then someone took it home and hot glued 3 feather boas from the clearance aisle of the craft store to the butt. Unforgiveable  The 3rd looks like a hurricane went through the dressmaker's shop (which happened to be located next door to Muppet Studios) and created a monstrosity. I can't even tell where her left arm is!

When I was starting out in the early 90s, there was a Canadian dancer who always had unusual costumes. I can't remember her name - Brigita or something like that. I liked about 2/3 of them, but there were definitely some monstrosities. I remember one that had a snake appliqued on the dress, which would have been OK if it hadn't merged into an actual stuffed snake head sitting on her shoulder!

Actually, from the description of the eyeball dress, my imagination whipped up a much, much worse version. I imagined them to be more like those blue 'evil eye' things the Turks wear. Kinda like a white, turquoise and black archery target. I guess I also put that imaginary horror on a lady with a bigger bosom, so they'd be 3-dimensional. Umh.

I'm not crazy about the real eyes either, but the slit pupils do help a little. I do love the cut of the dress.

This thread is brutal. Yulia Zagoruychenko is a US dress size ZERO. She could not possibly look fat, ever. Not in feathers, not in a caftan, not in anything. And I laughted out loud at the statement that she looked slow. Seriously? Have you seen her dance?

I find it hilarious that most of the pictures being used of women and the costumes that are being bashed show them dancing at BLACKPOOL. The trends are extreme at this competition. Do a search of some of the threads on Blackpool and you will learn that this is the case.

So, when do we get to see pictures of your costumes?

Another Kristina faux pas, but this one really isn't her fault...it's one of her costumes from the Dancing with the Stars tour:

No one said Yulia was fat or slow...we said her costume made her LOOK slow. I think we can all agree that the the wrong costuming can make even the most talented, seasoned pro look off.

Extreme costuming being a normal thing or not at Blackpool, some of these costumes definitely have the potential to detract from the dancing. The black dress with the neon fringe trim totally obscures the lady's left arm! How are judges supposed to see her lines if they are obscured by her dress?

The main point I think we're trying to make is that we aren't trying to be mean-spirited...the majority of the dresses we've mentioned have either physically deterred the wearer's dancing, been such a distraction that one can't pay attention to the wearer's dancing, or been so physically unflattering that it made the wearer less attractive to a judge's eye. All things to be avoided in competitive dancing...so their is some constructive criticism going on.

Have you been to Blackpool? There are so many dancers on the floor at once, in so many heats (imagine 12 heats in the first round of a Latin event) that people will wear ANYTHING to make an impression. For the first couple of rounds it's not so much about dancing well or with good lines or whatever, it's about simply being seen and remembered. I'm waiting for someone to go out there in a costume decorated with EL wire that glows or even flashes on and off, just to get the attention.

what is brutal??

i saw yulias dancing and i know how she looks and dance, it is just like HNF said "the wrong costuming can make even the most talented, seasoned pro look off."

we are not saying that we always had gorgeous dresses. i had couple of dresses which was complete disaster, but i don't have pictures here (they are still in my home country).

Not a chance, honey...politics, luckily, is not my true calling ;) And wearing nothing but paint and a smile isn't nearly as glamorous or sexy as it might sound...it took 5 hours for me to get painted (and I had to remain standing the entire time, so as not to smudge the paint), and then when it came time to pose, I had to take on so many weird poses so that my skin wouldn't wrinkle (and thus distort the design) or we would get a view that was, well, obscene. And to add insult to injury, the calendar editors ended up not using my shots and decided to use some leftovers from the previous year...all that trouble for nothing

Carmen Miranda was my thought too, and it definitely draws attention, which can be hugely important at some comps. I can't say I hate it, just nothing I would wear. In some respects, its sad that pros have to resort (stoop?) to gimmicks to catch judge's attention. I can completely understand the logistics of judge only having a few seconds for each couple, and I don't have any suggestions to fix this, just seems wrong. Technique, style and skill SHOULD be all that matters to. And maybe having a cute pro like Larinda or my pro. ;). I definitely don't find it surprising though that blackpool costumes keep showing up, for this very reason.

Laura
09-06-2008, 12:49 AM
Well, there are pros and then there are pros. I like watching the first round at Blackpool for the sheer humor of it. There are dancers, and dresses, that you will never see again....

And even if the judges have only a few seconds for each couple -- they are still judging a *couple of hundred* couples in that first round at Blackpool. It's insane.

I've watched 1st round of Friday afternoon pro standard a few years ago and I know what Laura means. That was the first time I've seen first round of open pro in Blackpool. In subsequent years I wasn't excited to go that early Friday afternoon for early rounds unless for watching my favorite former finalists who had to dance from 1st round due to change of partners.

I just read the whole thread thru for the first time. Though it could possibly hurt some feelings (because I dont think ppl realized that some of those folks might read the forums or they would have not been so forthright), I don't see that any of it was meant to be mean-spirited or ugly. It is normal to want to get together to critique, and have opinions on, outfits. Some of the costumes ARE pretty far out. We shouldn't have to pretend to like everything we see just because a pro wears it to blackpool. Being a fantastic/talented pro doesn't mean they have great taste. What was that old story about the king and the designer who convinced him that he was not naked but wearing a terrific outfit and so he ended up wearing it out in front of everyone? Anyway, the eyeballs on the boobs dress is really quite insane. But I bet the judges remembered her so I guess the designer and the dancer could consider the dress a success!

P.S. And I think we can all agree that despite our efforts to not do so, we will probably all end up committing a costume faux paux at some point in our lives that someone will call us out on....

Accusing a designer (or anyone) of being on drugs because you do not admire something they have created IS mean-spirited, defamatory and completely inappropriate. Talking about leaving the bad drugs behind and being on the good drugs is really wrong on DF because of the age of some of the members.

I didnt read it as them accusing the designer as being on drugs....guess its all in how a person takes a comment...kind of hard to tell how it is actually meant here just by reading it, too. Giving LSD to spiders causes them to build very weird spider webs. There have been scientific repors on this. The experiment has not been made on designers but their creating weird dresses has a higher probability than creating nice ones. Unlike you, I think that saying "he must have been on drugs when he created this ugly dress" is a much better message to our beloved <14 than "He must have forgotten to take his drug dose the day he created this dress."

Remember ......there is someone for every dress. And there is a time and a place to wear every dress. Some are great for shows only. Some are great for competition. Some look silly on one and fab on another. Most designers know when they miss and are grateful for the individual who walks in the booth to fall in love with a dress that got out of control.

My first dresses were awful. If someone had photos of them, you all would scream and poke great fun.......I can laugh at them now, but then, I was really proud of my accomplishments. I know that we live and breathe in the judgemental world of ballroom dance and we open ourselves for discussion everytime we walk out of our hotel rooms. I am just as guilty of poking fun at ugly or challenged dresses, but you all have reminded me of how hurtful it can be. So you shouldn't need moderators to stop you, you should stop yourselves.

One looked very much like a bedsheet that had been tied at the waist and shoulder and the other the britches were so sheer or flesh colored - the jury is still out on this one years later - that it looks like the nether regions were showing. It could have been a shadow, but I'm not sure. The thing is, I enjoyed the dancing but was incredibly distracted by the costumes.

The worst costume I've ever heard of was a rhythm costume from a few decades ago... It was all black but had white hand prints on the lady's tush. I did not witness it in person, but was told of it by my boss at the studio.

Worst costume I've seen anybody wear was a lady's Latin costume that had a large blue eyeball on each breast. I was like,

Hmmm...... what they were thinking?

... lol for a change...
In my last competition a couple of ladies dancing standard we're well lookign like they should have gone latin.... a stoned bra + a long peti coat or something like that + floats isn't exactly classy, they looked more like hawaian hoola dancers hahahahaha

Latin:
uhm when it comes to the guys its more of the mixture of color... completely red shirt and pants + black shoes ???

at the top of the idsf years ago there we're a couple of weird costumes but most of the ladies worked it well so it doesn't look weird. Maria Manusova had this bathing suit + poncho look that worked great for her.

Last year there was a cat suit in blackpool! rawr

I once saw a latin outfit. Medium brown, two piece, with maroon and gold fringe. It's hard to describe but the overall effect was of a carousel horse. Oy!

Well... definetly got Tornsberg's attention. (" What was she thinking when she got dressed? Is this “Cat Woman” out there, or is she on the way to a yoga class? How come it is ok for some people to wear something completely inappropriate and ugly and yet for other couples, what seems to be very fashionable and tasteful but perhaps slightly extrovert, totally unacceptable.
I just don’t get it!") BTW He'll be dancing show with Vibeke Toft at Copenhagen Open.:raisebro:

Here's a link to Yulia's "could be the hotel drapes" dress:

http://www.artrhythms.com/USDSC_2006/Max_Yulia_3_USDSC_2006.htm

It's a pretty color and fabric...I just think it lacks shape. And I can't shake the feeling she made it out of some drapes

LOL I actually liked this dress a lot... I never saw it in person, but it looks pretty in the "Angela" rumba WSS video...

That being said, I have seen more than my fair share of interesting costume choices. However, I have extremely picky taste and rarely like other people's costumes (I will sometimes like an element, like the skirt, or the general design, or the color, or the straps, but I RARELY like the whole ensemble)... this is why I always design my own, because I know that otherwise I would never be satisfied.

At collegiate comps I have seen a lot of unfortunate costume choices. I think because generally, college dancers do not have the money to afford a professionally made dress with proper built in panties and adequate booby support, so they end up wearing a cocktail dress, or "club wear," or a camisole and practice skirt. Now all that is well and good, except that outfits not made for dancing do not have built in panties and rarely have boobage support that will prevent you from popping out during jive or an enthusiastic arm gesture. I have seen too many private areas and rogue breasts escaping during college events... it makes me glad that I *always* (one notable exception which I will detail later) splurged and had something professionally made for me that kept all of my bits and pieces reined in and under control!!!

This thread is hilarious.... I mean, it is always fun to laugh (good-naturedly)about some of the less fortunate wardrobe choices that have come about... of course, everyone is entitled to their own personal taste and opinions and not everybody will agree on everything (which is why I try not to be too affected by criticisms of my costumes... unless of course it is something like "you spun and the audience saw half of your rear.." ok then it's time to get the dress re-made).... but sometimes I wonder if maybe they forgot to look at themselves! I saw a girl once who was a little heavy set and was wearing a VERY tight fitting dress.. it was basically a spandex tube dress that had clear straps attached. Now, that is something that even I wouldn't wear and I am quite slim, bc I like to dance in things that move with me... I felt bad for this poor girl because not only did the dress add a good 15 pounds (she was not that big, but the skirt was too short for her and the dress was very unforgiving and emphasized every jiggly bit), but she looked like she could hardly move bc it was so tight!!! It was a bad situation all around

Well to make up for the fact that I am making fun of ugly wardrobe choices and laughed unabashedly at the dresses posted in this thread, I am revealing a story of one of my own very unattractive costume choices.

To be fair, I was a "lowly" bronze dancer and had only been dancing a few months, so had no reason to splurge on an expensive "legitimate" costume, but I still wanted something shiny... because I do love me some shiny!!! So, I went to Cliquers and bought this horrible thing that I couldn't believe was actually being sold in a normal clothing store.

To the outfits credit, it had built in shorts, had good chest support (except for that one time when my partner accidentally untied one of the back straps but that was a different story altogether)... it was also cheap and very sparkly. It was also obscenely tacky (IMO). I think my friend described it best when she referred to it as The Gold Monstrosity.

Yeah, it was definitely not my most attractive and classy look on the floor, but it more than served its purpose... needless to say, boy was I happy when I finally splurged and bought my first real costume that was of my own design and didn't look like the end result of a Gold Sparkle Monster with a case of food poisoning.

Picture of the Gold Monstrosity in all its glory is attached!!! Enjoy!!!

dittoes.... I've seen more bra parts, safety-pinned-in-place dresses, control top pantyhose, lack of appropriate undergarments, boob spillage, and massive wedgies at collegiate comps than I ever wanted. It's kinda fun to see the same vintage costumes recycled over the years. I'd rather see that than dancers attempting to use cocktail dresses or prom dresses that simply aren't made to be danced in.

Okay folks, ask and ye shall receive. Somebody found the eyeball dress and linked me. I have re-uploaded the photo to not rob bandwidth. I feel kinda' badly bashing it, since it was actually designed by dressmakers... but oh wow.

Umh.

This is precisely what I am imagining right now.... I am so very sad that I cannot see the picture haha!!!

i usually like whatever costume yulia is wearing because they usually accentuate her figure, the costume in this video however, i just can't seem to get the hang of, it makes it look like she's carrying a feather duster on her arm, the rest of the costume is great but i'm greatly distracted by that ugly thing on her arm

hahahaa yes well thank you.... the shirt was eventually bought off me for some girl to wear clubbing...

yeah the arm plumage doesn't really do it for me but on the whole I am not offended by the dress...

I think one of my least favorite costumes of Yulia's was the brown fringe body suit she wore for "The Move" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-8uHyiKEQ8.... now that made it rather difficult for me to enjoy the dance bc i was distracted by the costume...
