i just download everthing for my iPod. I have yet to find CD's I am entirely happy with so I download the ones I like and make my own playlists.

In all seriousness, it is so hard for me to separate personal opinion from what I think a proper DJ would want to play.

Extreme vintage tango is just not my thing, but I know many love dancing to it. Not to incite a riot, but most of these scratch and pop recordings sound (to me) like people wailing passionately about something I really wish they'd get over, while violins swell and whine (or play "dinkey dink dink dink"). It kills me. Di Sarli I can listen to, but that's about it...

Meh. I listen to all of it, and dance to all of it. What I prefer at any given time is so subjective. Some days I want old-old stuff, some days I want classic stuff, some days I want modern/electronic, some days I want alternative.

Mostly, though, I just want to dance. Period. I don't care what's playing.

i do tend to avoid playing the extra scratchy ones at milongas and make an effort to find ones that I think have at least a decent sound quality (for their age).

I'm fond of a lot of Canaro for dancing, especially milonga, and many of the tracks I have seem to sound pretty good for their age.

I also like Di Sarli (again, most of the ones I have sound pretty good).

I have a tendancy to prefer rhythmic orchestras..D'Arienzo, Canaro, etc...rather than things like Pugliese, whch I am not fond of for dancing, mainly because I think it's hard music to really dance well to.

When we have a milonga, I like to fit a short Nuevo tanda in every few regular tandas, and try to find Nuevo music that works for close embrace, since the dance spaces here are tight, saving the more extravagent music for later in teh evening or at the very beginning.

I DJ-ed only once but even for this lone occasion I did not come with 20 CDs, I picked a few songs here and there in my tango/non-tango CDs and I built an mp3 playlist. I knew I did not have enough titles for the whole evening but we were supposed to take turns for DJ-ing.
Here it goes:

Tu boca mintio (d'Arienzo)
El puntazo (d'Arienzo)
Carnaval de mi barrio (Donato)
Cortina (30 seconds): Start me up (Rolling Stones)
Rosa de Otono (Nelly Omar)
Lo que vieron tus ojos (Lomuto)
Flores del alma (Podesta)
Cortina (30 seconds): Love like blood (Killing Joke)
Façon grande (Tipica Imperial)
A Salvador Allende (Tipica Imperial)
Confesion (Tipica Imperial)
Cortina (30 seconds): Love like blood (Killing Joke)
La Vida y la tempestad (Pugliese)
Ostinato (Pugliese)
Cortina (30 seconds): Start me up (Rolling Stones)
Mi dolor (De Angelis)
Pavadita (De Angelis)
Cortina (30 seconds): Love like blood (Killing Joke)
Lacrimas y sonrisas (D'Arienzo)
Valsecito Criollo (D'Arienzo)
Amor y celos (D'Arienzo)
Cortina (30 seconds): Start me up (Rolling Stones)
Tango colegiales (Debayres)
Nautic dancer (Stefan Karoll)
Nothing else matters (Apocalyptica)
Cortina (30 seconds): Love like blood (Killing Joke)
Ochos negros (Pugliese)
A evaristo Carriego (Pugliese)
Cortina (30 seconds): Start me up (Rolling Stones)
Se Dice de mi (Marcela Bernardo)
Organito de suburbio (Firpo)
Milonga del 900 (Tipica Imperial)
Cortina (30 seconds): Love like blood (Killing Joke)
El choclo (Julio Iglesias)
Adios pampa mia (Julio Iglesias)
Yira yira (Julio Iglesias)
La cumparsita (Julio Iglesias)
Cortina (30 seconds): Start me up (Rolling Stones)
Racing Club (Federico)
El adios (Donato)
Cafe Dominguez (D'Agostino)
Tigre viejo (Fresedo)
Cortina (30 seconds): Love like blood (Killing Joke)
Hijo de la luna (Meccano)
Making plans for Nigel (Nouvelle vague)
Jealous guy (Lennon)
Lemon tree (Fool's garden)
Cortina (30 seconds): Start me up (Rolling Stones)

So I used 22 CDs to build the playlist. But bringing the playlist instead of the actual 22 CDs allowed me to dance on my music ;)

There are some great Vals on the D'Arienzo CD I listed.

In retrospect, I probably should have left the Biagi CD off of the list. While a lot of people seem to like him, his songs don't really touch me the way some of the other ones do.

Not limited to, but favorably; Di Sarli, D'Arienzo, Canaro, Pugliese, Color Tango, Piazzola......in no particular order.

Am I the only one who pays absolutely no attention to the composer? I know the names, but I couldn't tell you who I like or don't like or what each one sounds like. There are a few pieces I recognize and know who did them, but other than that...no clue.

I have a few favorites from Biagi- El Recodo for tango and also the vals Lagrimas y Sonrisas and the milonga Flor de Monserrat.

I am always surprised that I like him (considering how I am not as fond of overly dramatic music) because the music is often difficult because of the strange accents but it's fun.

Don't know all of them, but that is quite close to the list I would give as well. Though I would add:
Yo Soy El Tango - Miguel Calo
Auscencia - Pugiliese (or, even better, the anniverseary set)

I tend to listen a lot to Fresedo and Canaro right now, but I love Miguel Calo as well. I've never gotten too into Nuevo Tango, but the first Narcotango CD has a couple lovely tunes on it.

My next purchase is going to be the Cafe Los Maestros album. I loved the TV documentary - quite moving.

Oh, and for Canaro fans, I'd also recommend the 'new' CD - Poema which has that song plus quite a few other good songs.
