View Full Version : DWTS7 Ep 1
Cody- just meh to me. But I figure he'll win between unstoppable votes from tween girls and pervy guys.
Rocco- wow, that was incredibly bleh. Just ick. He's in the running to go home.
Toni-Nice. A little off balance, but very impressive. It's so tough for the girls in latin, because they can't just stand there and little a half-nekkid girl wiggle around them and make them look good.
On another matter- I'd forgotten HOW bad the band is! Yeesh! Even my husband is noticing the butchering they're doing tonight!
Maurice- speaking of teh band, this music is atrocious! Is it really that hard to find vaguely foxtrot music? Because I have an ipod full, I could send him a list! Maurice is cute though, they did well with the crap they were given.
Glad to see the scores not being straight 10s to start off with. Like Tom, I didn't know they had a 4 paddle.
Brooke- pretty girl factor will have her up against Kim for first one home. And I want to know who thought having a ballroom costume in the ocean was a good idea, that was a sacrilege to the gods of rhinestones.
Best dance so far? Well, ok. If they say so. Maybe they got a report during the commercial to be nicer? That the realistic scoring wasn't working?
As DWTS officially jumps the shark....:)
Ted- he's definitely adorable. Thought it was great for first week. Good luck to him.
And Inna's gown is my fave costume so far for the night.
Lance- Lacey's outfit is atrocious, but the choreography was cute. (New folks are coming out with a bang, liked Inna's choreography as well.) Thought he did great.
Cloris- could she be cuter? Love her dress! Great color! And wow, they actually danced in closed hold. Whatever other problems there were, go Corky for bringing some "real" foxtrot back to the show!
Jeffrey- well that was atrocious, but hey, he did look like he was trying....

Maybe it is partly because they need to fit the music into a one-minute time span -- a lot of cutting and pasting?
Kim- ok Mark, let's have a talk about your costumes. when you get the urge to wear gloves, DO NOT. When you get the urge to wear a colored tuxedo jacket, DO NOT. It was ok. Her dress was nice. But hard to cheer for someone that got a spot on a reality show because she's on a reality show.

I am watching right now. Comments are so good. :p
Susan- don't think the dress was the most flattering skirt for her. She's got great legs, but the dress made them look odd with the weird cut. I think Len hit the nail on the head with the "too careful" comment. But that right there is Tony's choreography every season. It's always careful.
Misty- not bad at all. Nice extension with her arms, loved that.

Not sure if you were here for last season...but if you don't want to know the results before you get to watch the show, you may want to hold off on reading the threads (they're usually marked "spoilers") until after the show has aired in your part of the world.

YAY!!!!!!! Makes me happy I am in the ballroom world. Better than last season. A little something for everyone. Doing little happy dance.
And Cloris. Wow. People may actually want their mom to dance now. Its a shame, but a 90 my Mom would give her a run for the money, but she won't dance. I hope Cloris stays for awhile and my Mom could see it. We tried this once. I drove her to dance lessons and she screamed at me the whole way. And once inside, "oh how lovely to be here. I so enjoy this" I couldn't take it anymore......thought I would have a heart attack.

That was an entertaining opening show! Finally we have DWTS back!
I have not memorized the stars' names yet but think the stand-up comedian should go home, as much as we might miss Edita.
Glovis (is that her name?) will probably be the Jerry Springer or George Hamilton of this season although, admittedly, she is a much better dancer than those two but dancingwise she will not keep up with many of the others. She will probably get the "pitty votes" because of her age.
I really liked Tony Braxton, Brooke??? and the football player, he was a lot of fun to watch and if he stays in the competition he will shed some of that belly that is a bit in the way.
Misty did well, too. Yeah, Rocco's dancing was pretty poor but maybe his charme will save him this week. I thought he was very likeable and cute, much more than the comedian and that should give him an edge over the comedian.
Although Lacey's and the boy band guy's dance was quite good, there is always something about Lacey that really irritates me, already on SYTYCD. Why does she always have to stick out her tongue and act raunchy?
I can't wait for the mambo tomorrow!

Lol, reminds me of the conversation I had with my SO today right before my dance lesson lol. He won't step inside a dance studio, but yet I know he wants to learn how to dance lol.
I thought the show was overall very good for the first time around. It will be interesting to see the improvements. They also seemed like they were having fun, and they all from what I could tell they all tried to dance the best that they could. In the past, there has usually been at least one person not wanting to dance, and you could tell. I give them props for at least trying!

Sorry this is kinda late, but I had to watch CSI: Miami  My thoughts on all the couples...
Cody & Julianne - these two are just ADORABLE together! Liked the costuming, liked their cha...I think it deserved better than what the judges gave it. Cody is very enthusiastic (which I love) and actually is pretty good at pulling his shoulders back and chest out. Reminded me of Derek dancing. I agree with Carrie Ann, his expressions were a bit much, but the poor kid was prolly scared to death! Don't think these two will be going anywhere for awhile...
Rocco & Karina - pretty much just as I expected. Rocco was heavy on his feet, off time, and kept missing leads. But he seemed like he was really trying. Karina looked like she would have rather eaten glass than been on the show...then again, she was dancing with a sprained ankle. Unless these two perform the most stellar mambo mankind has ever seen tomorrow night, I think they're on their way out on Wednesday. And that dress Karina was wearing? Fur trim is one thing, but it looked like wardrobe killed about 12 grey cats and used their tails to fashion the skirt.
Toni & Alec - my god, this woman has aged exceptionally well. Absolutely beautiful, and in great shape. Good to see Alec back. I genuinely felt sorry for Toni, she seemed scared to death to dance with her heart condition...but their cha was nice, regardless. Not great (and not as good as Cody & Julianne's, if you ask me, but the judges seemed to think otherwise), but nice. She is a bit stiff and tends to let her shoulders come up by her ears, but again, the poor woman was probably scared to death. Beautiful, sparkly eye makeup. Looking forward to seeing more from her, she should be around awhile.
Maurice & Cheryl - Hmmm. Maurice is actually decent, but this routine just felt weird to me, which I guess is more Cheryl's fault, since it's her choreography. The music felt too fast for the smooth lilt of a foxtrot. Maurice does move well, though...he just needs to work on keeping his shoulders back and not slouching forward. Wasn't wild about how Cheryl's hair was styled...thought it made her look juvenile. These two are kinda in the middle of the pack for me.
Brooke & Derek - I'll say it: Brooke did well. But I don't think well enough to deserve the highest scores of the evening! She did the steps well, but stiffly, and with little emotion behind them. Again, I know - first night, really really nervous. I'm sure she'll loosen up. Derek was in rare form, both on and off the floor. I think our boy is gunning hard for the trophy this year. Loved Brooke in pants! Another great face of makeup and head of hair...and you would never know that woman has 4 kids! Definitely one of the front runners for this season.
Ted & Inna - this routine was actually one of my top 3 for the evening! Classy, understated, and beautiful...and both of them shined. Ted has exceptional rise and fall, and isn't afraid to really move around the floor. My only complaint (and this seemed to be across the board with everyone that danced foxtrot tonight): he needs to pull his shoulders back and his head up. And Inna! Such a breath of fresh air. Looking forward to seeing more of this couple this season, hopefully America agrees and keeps them around :D
Lance & Lacey - I've made no secret of it that I don't really care for Lacey, but I really did try to take in this routine with an open mind. Not gonna lie - I HATED the choreography. I thought it was more flash and trash than it was good solid figures. But Lance knocked it outta the park! He actually looked really, really good...great hip action, clean footwork, great musicality. Lacey...Lacey, Lacey, Lacey. I thought her costume was distracting and unflattering, and just like I harped on Kherington not wearing heels for ballroom this season on SYTYCD, I think boots were a terrible choice for Lacey. I get the feeling she is gonna really get it from Len by the end of the season, he made it clear that he is "old school" and wasn't really feeling her more unique interpretation of the cha-cha. But then again, this is a show about the stars, not the pros, so I guess it really doesn't matter about Lacey. Lance is definitely one of the top (if not the top) male in the competition.
Cloris & Corky - what these two lacked in technique and performance, Cloris more than made up for in personality! Not a terrible foxtrot, for an 82 year old. She doesn't have the range of motion of the younger competitors, but she moves well though her range of motion and can knock out the steps without getting off time or missing leads. Very classy on the floor...and sassy off of it! I think we were all correct in assuming that live TV was about to become a lot more interesting with Cloris on it...boy did it ever. And she is the first person I've seen that can make CORKY seem subtle! Great pairing, even if their dancing isn't the best. I can see these two sticking around for awhile, for the simple fact that Cloris will keep America on their toes
Jeff & Edyta - no big surprises here: their routine was feeble at best. Then again, Jeff was at a bit of a disadvantage with a scratched cornea from rehearsals. But I feel like he did the best he could with what he had. Kinda disappointed with Edyta - like Karina, she did little to hide the dour expression on her face, while wearing as little clothing as possible. Not much else to say, other than I would be surprised if they weren't sent home tomorrow.
Kim & Mark - not a big Kim fan either, but she actually came across as very classy and graceful tonight...I was impressed. Unfortunately, their foxtrot was a non-event for me - not bad, but not great, with no feeling whatsoever. Like Carrie Ann mentioned, it seems like Kim is afraid to move her head, and hence connect with her partner or the audience. Other than that, her footwork is actually very clean, and she has a decent topline. The only thing that stuck out for me in this routine was Mark's Captain Kangaroo jacket and inane white gloves. Shame on you, wardrobe department! Doubt these two are leaving this week, but unless they really spice things up and endear themselves to America, they could be headed for a premature exit.
Susan & Tony - I wanted these two to do well so, so, so bad. Poor Susan was just terrified. She barely moved. She looked great, but she did the moves as if she had bones made of glass and was afraid to really cut loose. I hope she overcomes her fear. Looking forward to seeing her foxtrot tomorrow night...I think the standard dances will suit her much better. This pair is kinda up in the air for me...could do really well, could do poorly.
Misty & Maksim - another underrated routine, in my opinion. Misty had a gorgeous frame, and her moves were fluid and crisp. Probably the best technique of the evening. But she and Maks were about as energetic as my cat after a bowl of milk. Again, I attribute it to nerves. But if this girl can shake those nerves loose...she could win this whole thing.
Warren & Kym - these two were a wonderful, welcome surprise! I have never seen a man Warren's size who can move as well as he can. And he is just a joy to watch...he looked like he had more fun than everyone else combined out there tonight. Surprisingly enough, he wasn't too heavy on his feet. Interested to see how he'll fare in the quickstep tomorrow night. Another one at the top of my list :D
Other notes...
*Okay, the judges must have a points limit...cause they sure aren't giving away the points like they were last year. Even some of the pros were shocked at the low scores they were handing out (Derek, Kym, and Tony were all gaping in the background when Toni & Alec got their scores).
*The house band seems to have gotten better this year. The song choices aren't as tacky, and the whole delivery seems a lot less cheesy.
*Anyone else see Joey Fatone sitting in the corner, to the left of the judges' table, with his arm around a mystery brunette (that was definitely NOT his wife)?

Derek Hough continues to impress me as a choreographer. He seems to find a way to bring out the best of what his partners have to offer. In the routine tonight, he often had both of Brooke's hands so he could help create her hip movement, or they were standing close together with her back to his side which again created the look of a lot of hip movement. Smart!
I know there are some Lacey haters on the board, but I'm going to say this: if I saw that number at a studio showcase, I would be on my feet cheering and screaming. It was fun, it was inventive...it was great entertainment! It was not the best demo of cha-cha basics, but this isn't a closed bronze comp.
Warren Sapp was the best surprise of the night. I assumed "Big guy--he's going to be able to move about as well as Penn last year." Um...wow! He had a little shimmy going, and clear rhythm through his hips. He wasn't the best dancer of the night, but he was the best surprise.
Cloris Leachman got beeped twice--how great is that?!? Way to debunk the myth that older women are demure. I don't think she'll get pity votes at all; I think she'll get oh-my-God-she-is-so-outrageous-I-can't-wait-to-hear-what-she-says-next votes. I had no idea who she was before this, but now I think she's great.
***
The comedian--Jeff Ross or something like that?--was the weakest performance of the night. Oh, and the blue latin pants did him no favors. Got off some funny lines, though.
Susan Lucci was the second weakest in my book. She seemed very tentative and not at all grounded.
***
The band...oy. Am I wrong, or was Toni Braxton's cha-cha the slowest version of "Smooth" ever? It was then followed by a very fast foxtrot for Maurice Greene, which seemed faster than her cha-cha. I would like a beats per minute count on those two songs!
***
Remind me: high ratings are a good thing, right? So why would you put an asset like Mark Ballas in that outfit? I get that the song was "The Pink Panther," but must wardrobe be so literal?

hustleNflow, agree with you about Brooke and Ted - she was slightly overscored and he was underscored.
I agreed with what Carrie Ann said about Misty: she danced the foxtrot a little too hard at times.
Cloris Leachman may have a great personality, but I would prefer it to show up more during the dance, not after it. A few more weeks of her antics could get tiresome.
The babe next to Joey Fatone was Jamie Lynn Sigler, Soprano's daughter. (A potential DWTS contestant, maybe?)

Not the greatest dancing, but, absolutely, the best opening 'show' for a while. Noteworthy moments...Cloris Leechman is a riot. They had to bleep her, not twice, but thrice! Funny as *BLEEP*. A more personal note; I'm sad for Susan...she's a friend. I know she can do better. Isn't it funny to see these otherwise top stars succumb to nerves out there doing what so many of us know is hard work, but the rest of the world believes is just playtime.

I really really really hated Edyta's costume. I love her attitude, her dancing, and what she's trying to get Jeff Ross to do, but every year they dress her in a less and less beautiful way. That costume really turned me off.

My take on it all:
Cody and Julianne....a little too cutesy for me, but I did love how enthusiastic he. Hey, I'm a sucker for someone who gets excited about ballroom dancing!
Thought they scored them a little low, compared to some of the scores they gave out later in the night. Guess thats the disadvantage of going first...
Rocco and Karina...eh, he seems nice enough and again seems happy to be there, which I like, but I wouldnt mind if he was the one to leave. Agree with the poster who said that Karina's dress looked like they killed a bunch of grey cats and attached their tails to her dress!
Toni and Alec...I thought Toni looked great and did really good. Was happy for Alec that he got someone decent. Kind of liked these two...
Maurice and Cheryl...he did really good but I just wasnt hooked on him. Like Rocco, I wouldnt mind if he was the one to leave.
Brooke and Derek...I thought she did really good. Dont know how long she will last, but I liked these two together.
Ted and Inna.....I thought I was going to dislike this guy because of his couch-potato attitude, but he surprised me. He actually put his all into it and the routine wasnt bad at all! Inna came across as much more likeable than Karina, IMO...
Lance and Lacey...wasnt sure whether I was going to like her on the show or not, but so far so good. The routine was fun and she and Lance really fit well together. I liked the both of them...but I did NOT like the boots. I would hope she should be able to be a "rebel" AND still wear the approrpriate shoes...
Cloris and Corky...my sister texted me while Cloris was dancing and said "I guess when you get old you lose the ability to point your toes?" and I had to agree. Her dancing was so-so (but the fullness of her skirt made it look really pretty when she turned). I was in tears laughing when they were judging her, though. She'll be around a bit for comedic relief....
Jeff and Edyta...I hate that Edyta got someone who has no chance of winning, but I have to say it...I hope he's one of the ones to go this week.
Mark and Kim...Kim didnt do that bad. Hated Mark's pepto bismol suit and his gloves. He seems quite quirky in his dressing (or someone in wardrobe doesnt like him much). I could not connect to Kim at all though and I wonder if the general public will feel the same.
Susan and Tony....to me, watching Susan dance was kind of painful. I thought I would love her dancing but I just see another season of Tony whining about how they underscore his person!
Misty and Maxim....she didnt do as bad as the tennis player from the other season, but it was still kind of painful (sometimes) to watch her dance. She's so well-muscled that she sometimes looks manly.....
Warren and Kym...well, Warren was certainly a suprise! he wasnt great, but he was quick on his feet and enthusiastic and he reminded me alot of Emmit Smith.
Overall a good show, though I hate that two couples are going this week. My favorites? Dont really have any yet. Ask me after they dance in an alternate style tonight. lol!

I think Brooke and Toni have lots of potential (and Ted for the guys). They move very well; just need some refinement in the movements. I cannot believe that Brooke has four children. *oy* what a body! And I certainly hope I'm moving as well as Cloris if I'm around at 82!

With all the focus on Cloris Leachman's antics, I'm guessing many folks missed another example of Bruno's rather insensitive use of the language. I know he means no harm, but Bruno's comment about Warren -- "Big boys can dance!" was not cool. Perhaps its his own cultural background that doesn't allow him to see the problem with referring to adult black males as "boys." "Men" or "fellows" or even "guys" would have worked better.

I think it's Bruno's background, having grown up in Italy. Heck, I grew up in New England and I didn't know until fairly recently that it was an issue, but I could see that someone growing up in other (and Southern) parts of the US would know.
It would probably be a good idea for someone from the production staff at the show to clue Bruno in, though, seeing as he probably wouldn't have known automatically.

it's clear why Cloris is on the show now - she's just the zaniest 80-year old I think i've ever seen. if she were acting like that at 24 or 35 i'd have thought she was actually HIGH on something during the taping - that's how erratic it is to curse repeatedly on live television.

Altho this is slightly off topic i thought it was cute.. It's a clip of Joey Fatone having a visit from Lance Bass... And Lance in the audience while Joey does his rumba..

I think he hit just about every group out there. What was his comment to Cloris - something about Geriatric Gallactica...*oy*
Ehhh...after re-reading; I don't think he remotely meant anything by "big boys".
"Battleship Geriatrica"...I was rolling on the floor :uplaugh: And I don't think Bruno intentionally tries to insult anyone...remember, there is a bit of a language barrier, plus Bruno is a bit flamboyant in his language. Warren didn't seem the least bit bothered by the "big boy" comment (nor Cloris about the "Battleship Geriatrica" comment), so I don't think we should be, either. Anyone is bound to be offended by someone's language if they look hard enough.

Just a quick question here..
Does anyone remember where to find the list of music they use every week on DWTS?

Wikipedia has a comprehensive list of the scores, performances, and dances up already:

Anybody else notice when Edyta gets a bad partner she wears less and less clothes?
Brilliant observation! Although I find Jeffrey Ross very funny and would be bummed to see him go.
